Itstarted at 7 a.m.with an activitycalled preop, where they ready youfor the operation. The preop lastedalmost 2 hours while the actualoperation only an hour. When Iwas finally rolled into the ice boxthey call surgery I was assured byeveryone present that this opera-tion was pretty common and if Ihad any concerns, forget them.

“We'll take good care of you,”they said, and then someone askedif I had a preference for music. Itold them I liked Country andalmost instantly over the operatingroom speaker system came therich voice of country singerGeorge Strait. I was reallyimpressed!! I silently hoped thateverything else would work aswell. (Especially the heartpacer!). As they were putting a surgicalcover over my face and upperbody, I asked the anesthesiologisthow soon after the procedure Iwould awaken. "Awaken?" shelaughed, "you won't be asleep, youwill be conscious throughout theoperation". I was appalled, havingthought I would be put under

sedation and would wake with theoperation a done deed."Don'tworry" she said "I am givingyou something that will calm yournerves and something else that willmask any pain. You will be able totalk with the surgeon and anyoneelse that wants to chime in." Inoticed 4 or 5 gowned staff pres-ent, whose jobs went unknown, butI do remember casually talkingwith the surgeon, He said "hello"and that this would be painless andquick. I think I said "sounds goodto me Dr B". And though I wasn'tput to sleep, much of the operationwent by fuzzily and I think I wasfurther under sedation than I real-ized. Finally someone said, "It's allover and everything went well"."How'd I do?" I asked.

"Well," said the anesthesiologist"you were pretty talkative, and we

enjoyed it when you sang alongwith two of the songs playing onthe speaker" "Sing," I said, "I amnot a singer, I can't sing." "Wenoticed that early on" sheremarked, "but it was good enter-tainment and you did know thewords!!" I could hear chucklingfrom the surgical staff as I waspushed out of the room, so Ithanked them all, waved goodbye, and to myself (and for my owngood), promised somehow to endmy operating room

Valley hospital needs your supportI’m asking all Kern Valley residents to take a little time to contact our senators and con-

gress people, both state and federal, regarding Governor Brown’s budget proposal to cutreimbursement rates for Skilled Nursing Facilities, (SNFs). These funds are Medicare andMedicaid (federal) but are distributed by the state through Medi-Cal. Our hospital has a70-bed Skilled Nursing Facility.

The governor’s budget calls for rolling back reimbursement rates to 10 percent below’08 rates for SNFs. This will result in reductions of more than 30 percent. Our hospitaldistrict cannot afford this. If this is allowed to happen, I fear for the district’s more than300 local employees and their families. I fear the greater economic impact on the entirevalley. Our hospital is truly “critical access.” We live in a geographically isolated area. As you

know, with landslides, weather, even accidents, access in and out of the valley can be pre-vented or inhibited. I fear for the health and even survival of our family members, friendsand neighbors if we allow the doors of our hospital to be closed.

Please forward to all of your Kern Valley associates, friends and loved ones. The futureof our hospital depends on you.Dave Derr

Middleworth suffering forgetfulness?I have been a fan of Rod Middleworth’s column for a long while. Sometimes I suspect-

ed, however, that from time to time he engaged in a little “romancing of the truth.” Thisseemed apparent to me when reading a column earlier this month. Rod writes about hisyouth and about riding his bike from their San Fernando Valley home to Macy’ in down-town Los Angeles. At the time Rod was a youngster there was no Macy’s in Los Angeles. In fact, I don’t believe there were any Macy’s in the west. They were an East Coast chain.Maybe it was really J.C. Penney or Sears.Robert S. AllenSanta Fe Springs, CA

Editor’s note: Good catch. In consulting with Rod, most likely the store was the May Co.

Kudos to volunteersMany thanks to all the volunteers who participated in the planning and success of the

Heritage Days celebration on Nov. 10, at Nuui Cunni Native American Cultural Center atFrench Gulch. There were more than 150 children from schools here in the valley and

PICKS OFTHE WEEK

“The Help”(PG-13) — Thisfilm about issuesof race, class, gender, respectand friendshiphas been kickingup criticalacclaim from thestart. Set in the1960s inMississippi, Skeeter (EmmaStone) is a young reporter whoforms a connection with Aibileen(Viola Davis) and takes an interestin the lives of the black house-keepers employed by the ladies ofhigh-society.

“Cowboys and Aliens” (PG-13) — When an amnesiacstranger (Daniel Craig) rolls intoa Wild West town, he gets roughtreatment from the local boss(Harrison Ford). What the towns-folk don’t know is that they’reunwittingly setting the stage for areluctant alliance with thestranger against a commonenemy.

The movie just can’t seem tomake up its mind between gri-macing action flick and an adven-ture that knows just how ridicu-

lous it is. Indeed, there are cow-boys and aliens, but such a title

also sets highexpectations forother things —like gags, gun-fights and silli-ness. This gun-slinger gets socaught up in acowboy tough-guy routine thatit just misses thetarget that mat-ters: fun.

“Mr. Popper’s Penguins” (PG)— In this family comedy, JimCarrey plays a driven, ruthlessNew York businessman who isseparated from his family. Clearly, somebody is in need of a crew ofcomputer-animated critters toturn his world upside down andshow him what is really impor-tant.

The film boasts it was shot withreal penguins, but most of theantics are products of animation— you can expect only so muchout of the little guys, after all.Whatever it was that made thebook so lovable has been substi-tuted with a solution of computerhijinks and Carrey’s physicalcomedy.

Bakersfield who attended the TANF sponsored event. This is a yearly program and always looked forward to by all of the volunteers from

Nuui Cunni. Also, since we now have four certified food handlers, who were able toassist with serving the food provided by Jim Wyly and were responsible for the big cleanup job.

Since this type of program is a long time in planning, volunteers at Nuui Cunni spentmany hours in preparation, including making 200 necklaces for all the children whocame. Each year, the volunteers do something different for guests and it is so wellreceived by the children. They also escort visitors to various educational activities set uparound the grounds, plus help with Native American Crafts displays.

Without these volunteers and our fearless leader, Patricia Malone Henry, Chairwomanof the Kern River Paiute Council, this size of an undertaking would be near impossible.

Once again, “kudos” to Nuui Cunni and all volunteers, who so unselfishly give of theirtime.Shirley AllenFriends of the Center Coordinator

On the feather sideThe 24th annual Lake Isabella

Junior Pheasant Hunt was a hugesuccess, with asmany girls asboys. It was awonderful sight tosee the next gener-ation experiencinghunting with thewide-eyed gazeand anticipationthat you can onlysee in the eyes of ayoungster. Therewere many parts of this hunt thatwere joy to watch but the one standout part was the fact that there werequite a few girls taking part andmost were very good shooters. As ayoung hunter, I can't remember anyof my dad's friends' daughters beinginterested in hunting. I applaud thedads whose influence keeps the cir-cle of hunting unbroken.

While the sky was blue with lotsof sunshine those blustery windsdidn't have much affect on the

shooters as the dogs and there han-dlers flushed bird after bird, while Iwatched each bird that flushed fallback to earth from the shotgun of ayoung hunter. Another part of thishunt that hit that feel good buttonwas the interaction between the par-ents and their kids. When you get agroup of hunters together whetheradults or kids, they always seem tohuddle around and begin the storytelling. With lots of birds, eagerhunters, and a well organized club ofdedicated volunteers, this was a safeand memorable event for allinvolved. I would like to say thanksto all the kids, the moms and dads, the dogs and their handlers, theNational Rifle Foundation, the Fishand Game Habitat Club, the Dept. ofFish and Game and the U.S. ForestService for their involvement andparticipation. There will be a 25thJunior Pheasant Hunt!

“Give thanks tothe LORD, for he isgood; his loveendures forever.”

- Psalm 107:1

Here’s a quickno-credit assign-ment: Think ofsomething you arethankful for.

Most likely youdid, and most likely it wasn’t all thatdifficult to come up with somethingfor which you either are, or should be,thankful. Examples can range fromsimple breath, the love of family, orperhaps something far less grand likethe blessing of a new car.

Perhaps the assignment was evena reminder that thankfulness is a goodthing and should be added to the self-help list of ways to feel better on aregular basis. No argument, and cer-tainly in line with Scriptural injunctionto be those who live life with a senseof gratitude for what we have ratherthan despondency and complaint forwhat we don’t.

This being so, may I ask why sim-ple moments of “what I am mostthankful for is . . . “ can often seemsimplistic and shallow at best, andself-serving and hypocritical at worst?

The above verse gives us a key thatis often missing or overlooked in ourdesire to be those who are thankful.Consider this: If we begin our givingof thanks at anything less than thegoodness of the Father’s great heartof love, then we run the risk of alsogiving place to complaints for all thereasons life gives us to be far less thanthankful. The Psalmist directs us togive thanks simply for the goodness ofGod, and the presence of His neverending love in our lives.

This beginning place can birth an

outpouring of thankfulness for specificpoints of praise, but if the order is notkept in place (God first), thankfulnesscan also be an unwitting breedingground for bitterness, jealousy, resent-ment and frustration.

The moment things or stuffbecomes the focus of our thankfulhearts, then the absence of things orthe loss of stuff can quickly becomereasons for me to forego the giving ofthanks, and even worse, to believe Iam justified in my complaint. Afterall, I gave God thanks when thingsworked in my favor, why should I notblame Him when circumstancesturned ill?

This is far more than splittinggrammatical or theological hairs, andthe results can have sweeping and farreaching effect on our lives. To beginour returning of thanks in who God is,and what His presence in our livesactually means is to embrace all oflife’s experiences within the scope ofthe Father’s willingness and ability towork all things together for good. From this vantage point we are ableto see past the transient nature of life’sblessings, and the temporary natureof life’s difficulties while peering intothe eternal heart of our loving Lord.

In a willingness to give thanks forthe goodness of God in the face ofwhat may indeed be anything butgood, our confession becomes largerthan the momentary event beingexperienced. To pause in thankfulnessto the One from whom all blessingsflow will release a life-working flowwithin us that surpasses the specificsand temporal, and pushes into theeternal nature of the Holy Spirit’swork within us. This remains theongoing opportunity for us as believ-ers in Jesus, and while a day set asidefor the giving of thanks can be areminder and encouragement, alifestyle of thankfulness for the greatlove of God can fundamentally changewho we are as sons and daughters ofGod.

This is a ques-tion that I amasked by clientson a regular basis. Is there a differ-ence between amobile home anda manufacturedhome?

They answer isa definite yes!

There is a hugedifference both in the eyes of banksand the law.

HUD guidelines changed on June15, 1976 because of new constructionrequirements mandated by congressfor mobilehomespassed in1974.

The guide-lines wereand aredesigned tomake manu-factured housing both safer and bet-ter able to retain it’s value over thelong term as well as remain anaffordable housing option. Thesedays affordability in housing is moreimportant than ever even with thestrong market downturn we haveseen the last couple of years.

California Law goes even further, defining the terms “mobile home.”Basically what the law says is thatanything built after June 15, 1976 is a

manufactured home, anything beforeis a mobile home.

This a huge factor to considerwhen buying a home both for a resi-dence or an investment. Anythingprior to June 15, 1976 banks will notfinance with conventional financing. There are some outfits out there thatwill, but get ready for short termloans and really high interest.

Banks consider anything builtbefore that date to be too much of arisk because of fire safety, structuralintegrity and value issues. Those lawsmandated several very importantsafety issues. For example, drywall inthe water heater closet for fire resist-ance and 2x4 construction, pitchedroofs with eaves, modern insulationand plumbing and several other very

valuableup-gradesandimprove-ments.

Thenewestmanufac-tured

homes, in may ways, are built as wellor better than stick built houses, which is a result of that 1974 lawbeing passed. Make sure you knowwhat you are buying, a manufacturedhome or a mobile home.
