Kerrang! is a weekly UK-based magazine devoted to rock music, first published on June 6, 1981.

The main target audience for Kerrang magazine are 15-19 year olds who are interested in rock/punk/grunge/indie music etc. I get this impression because of the bands listed at the bottom of the cover who will be inside the issue and because of the

central image of the magazine.

Kerrang is priced at

£2.20

The title in particular gives me a lot of information about the entire magazine. From the title “Kerrang” its something to do with music because of the evident use of onomatopoeia. The word “Kerrang” sounds like a guitar being strummed and again links back to the theme as it is a music magazine. I can also tell what image is trying to be portrayed. An image temptation, sexiness and feminine is being portrayed in this magazine. And the style of the magazine is very bright with a white back ground and a red vibrant chair.

There are puffs on the front cover and they tell me that there will be free posters inside, and tells me about the bands/artists being interviewed inside. Because of the types of bands mentioned I can see that the magazine is being targeted to maybe teenage girls because the bands are mostly young males. Also because the names of the bands are listed at the top of the cover I it will help readers because they can see exactly what will be in the magazine.

The slogan of this magazine is LIFE IS LOUD. Again it links back to the musical attributes of the magazine and is linked with sound, noise and gives the image of being live. It might help to attract readers because from the slogan they can tell that it will be a music magazine and one that is quite edgy, loud and typically ‘rock and roll’.

The colours used on the front cover are quite dark, there is a lot of black and the colours reflect the stereotypes of this type of music. The fonts used are not fancy but they are all bold The cover of “Kerrang” magazine always has a range of rock sub-genres so that it attracts as many of the audience as possible.

One main image on the cover and it takes up most of the page, the image links with the main cover like ‘within temptation’ because the way the image is taken can be seen as sexy. She is wearing sexual clothes showing a bit of skin and looking right into the camera.

Telling the reader what else is in the magazine make the reader want to buy it, using popular band names will also make more people purchase the magazine.

Other images on the front cover also let the reader know who else is featuring in the magazine and gives us a clear identity of who they are.

The colours used are quite plain and simple, Black, yellow and white. The fonts used are also quite basic. The colours and fonts on each page of the magazine are very consistent and nothing really stands out. This also goes along with the house style of the cover which is quite orderly and structured.

There are promotional features on the page which can be found on the bottom left hand corner. It is promoting a subscription to the magazine and it states the price and the amount of issues you will receive. The colour yellow is used in this part of the magazine along with images of previous magazine covers to make it stand out and grab the reader’s attention.

The word ‘contents’ in in the same style as the title of the magazine, this shows that the magazine is consist throughout.

The editorial is included in the contents page and this lets the reader know about the magazine by including page numbers and about the editor herself. This is largest section of text on the page.

There are pictures with captions telling the reader a little bit about the story, using an image gives you more information and makes the magazine contents page look fuller meaning the reader will have its attention drawn to the bigger things like the pictures.

All of the headings on the contents page are in capitals and this can make it seem as though it is shouting the words at you which links to the genre of the magazine, they are also easier to recognise and stand out.

There is a main image which takes up most of the page, the clothing and facial expressions link to the genre of the magazine along with the rest of the pictures, with them being ‘up to date’ and ‘popular looks’.

Rule of thirds is used on the contents page, this splits the page up into 3 columns making it look professional and creating a suitable layout for the magazine.

A stand first has been included so the reader knows a bit about the article before reading the whole thin, this is also in bold to stand out.

This tag line matches the main cover line that was used on the front cover, this can identify that this is the main double page spread out of the whole magazine because it was also the main cover line and image on the front

This is a quote from Sharon and it is in white capitals against a red background which makes it stand out, also her body language from the image shows that she isn't happy and that the quote could be something to do with that.

The house style of Kerrang’s double page spread is a simple white background, there is a red chair where the image has been taken from and this stands out. The red chair is the only bright colour on the double page spread so the reader is automatically attracted to it first. There is a mast head which takes up about a fifth of the page and then there is two columns of the interview. This is really small texts and there is quite a lot which may be too much for someone to read without getting bored.

She is wearing all black which represents the genre of the magazine being rock/indie.

Bold words start off the article this makes it stand out to the reader, and also lets you know where to start.

The mast head of this article is in white, the background is also in white but the text still stands out because of the shadow effect being used, this shows that the article is very simple and Kerrang aren't trying to impress their readers.
