To understand the essence of The Kessler Collection is to know its founder, Richard C. Kessler. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Kessler is a visionary, entrepreneur, astute businessman and philanthropist.

Kessler has over 40 years experience in the field of hotel development and operations. At 23 years old, Kessler helped establish Days Inn of America and became the right-hand man to real estate developer, Cecil Day. One year later, Richard became the president and chairman of the company, owning 20 percent of Days Inn when it was sold. In 1982, Kessler opened his first boutique hotel in Savannah, Ga.

In 1995, Kessler started his own enterprise of outstanding boutique hotels around the country — “The Kessler Collection.” Throughout the Kessler Enterprise existence, family has been at its core, from operations and planning, to décor and character.

Kessler’s passion for collecting art started at a young age, when he saw the unique craftsmanship in Indian arrowheads, and began what would be the first of many collections. Throughout the years, Kessler assembled a variety of art collections, including antique furniture, hand-made oriental rugs, rare clocks and watches, culturally inspired glass art and bronze sculptures, all connected by a common thread of pure beauty.

It was in the early 1980s that Kessler began collecting paintings and developing an interest in the discovery of lesser-known artists. This evolved into a new passion in itself, as he was excited by the accessibility of painters and ability to learn the inspiration behind their art.

Kessler finds joy in the color and dimensions created on a simple canvas, and therefore views paintings as a luxury rather than an investment.

Kessler’s expansive art collection is dispersed between his personal homes, galleries, storage and also in all ten of The Kessler Collection hotels. Passion for art is something that Kessler knows will always drive him to keep collecting, and he continues to search for artists that inspire him.

Mr. Kessler and his entire family are consummate supporters and leaders of worthy causes. He has served as Chairman of the Board for Lutheran Brotherhood (a Fortune 500, thirty billion dollar Minneapolis-based financial services organization), founder and Chairman of the New Ebenezer Conference and Retreat Center, founder and board member of Treutlen House for children, and founder and sustainer of The Kessler Reformation Collection at Emory University’s Pitts Theological Library.

With a strong belief in supporting talented and bright young people who may lack financial opportunities, the Kessler family has also sponsored six scholarship programs.

Among his many passions, Richard Kessler is an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He enjoys big game and upland bird hunting and has a vast collection of notable trophies to go along with the lifelong memories of his exciting hunts. The Kessler Canyon property is a major participant in Colorado’s Ranching for Wildlife and is a cornerstone of Kessler’s support of conservation.

Ranching for Wildlife is a management partnership between the Division of Wildlife and owners of large tracts of private land providing limited public hunting access to those who draw licenses. These efforts help preserve and enhance open spaces for wildlife to live and thrive in hopes of keeping our hunting heritage alive for future generations.

The Kessler Collection paints a re-defined “Bohemian Experience” for guests, rooted in the history of Bohemian cultures, including classical European Bohemia, unconventional and colorful gypsy lifestyle, and funky California free spirits. The bohemian approach to life defines the character at each hotel, where guests can feel a little creative, edgy and free.
