cited scholarship and I have won numerous teaching awards, including the

Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

ADMINISTRATION AND LEADERSHIP

2003 – present Founding Director, Johnson Institute for Responsible Leadership, University of

Pittsburgh. I have grown this project from its inception as a small lecture series in

1996 to its present stature as a University Institute. During this time, I have raised

nearly $3 million to support its activities. The annual budget is approximately

$140,000 of which 90% comes from outside sources or earned income. Among

The Leadership Portfolio, a leadership development program for 12-15 of

GSPIA’s most promising and most motivated students. This program includes

academic and community-based leadership development experiences including

serving on a local nonprofit board of directors;

Annual Exemplary Leader Award, given annually to a leader who exemplifies

the core values of ethics, accountability, and public service. We are now in the

fifth year of this award and we have written two case studies of prior winners for

use in classes at the University of Pittsburgh and elsewhere;

Philanthropy Forum, an annual lecture series under the direction of Kathy

Buechel (former president of the Alcoa Foundation) that attracts 3-4 leading

foundation executives to campus to give lectures on strategic issues in

philanthropy

Seminar in Ethics, Leadership and Corporate Governance, designed for and

delivered to senior executives from Nigeria. We have served nine cohorts: May

and October, 2008; May and October 2009; May and October 2010; May and

October 2011; May 2012

Nonprofit Clinic, providing high quality consulting services to nonprofit

organizations on topics such as strategy development, market analysis, feasibility

analysis, program evaluation, governance, and general management. Consulting is

provided by advanced graduate students under my supervision. Over the past four

years, we have served over 30 nonprofit clients.

2009 – 2012 Director, Doctoral Studies Program, Graduate School of Public and International

Affairs, University of Pittsburgh. I led the faculty in a revision of the doctoral

program, resulting in more selective admission criteria, new core curriculum,

consolidated fields of specialization, four-year funding for students, and a revised

comprehensive exam format.

1998-2000 Director, Division of Public and Urban Affairs, Graduate School of Public and

International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh. I coordinated the

NASPAA/COPRA Reaccreditation Process.

1995- 1997 Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Graduate School of Public and

International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh. I designed and secured approval

from the Board of Trustees for a new executive master’s degree, the Master of

Public Policy and Management.

1996 Interim Director, Institute of Politics, University of Pittsburgh. I provided stability

during a period of leadership transition.

1988-1991 Assistant to the President, University of Pittsburgh. I managed high-visibility

external projects, assisted in the creation of the Institute of Politics, and advised

the President during a period of leadership transition.

1987-88 Assistant Dean for Strategic Planning and External Programs, Graduate School of

Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh. I secured initial funding

ahead of other most other schools of public policy and management.

1984-87 Assistant Director then Director of Executive Programs, Heinz College (then the

School of Urban and Public Affairs), Carnegie Mellon University. I secured

funding and provided leadership of high-profile executive programs for senior

federal executives (SES), senior members of the Pennsylvania Governor’s staff,

senior staff in the City of Pittsburgh, and new college presidents and

administrators.

PHILANTHROPIC AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

2000-2003 President, The Forbes Funds, a supporting organization of The Pittsburgh

Foundation. (on leave from the University of Pittsburgh). I established a strategy

for nonprofit capacity building, instituted clear grantmaking criteria, established

the Wishart Award for Nonprofit Excellence, and launched the Tropman Fund for

Nonprofit Research
