Centuries ago, schools began as a way to teach some basic reading, some writing and
rudimentary math skills and to cultivate values that serve a
democratic society .
At the beginning of the 20th Century leaders saw public
schools as a logical site for the assimilation of immigrants and
the social engineering of citizens for the industrial age.
Thus began the expansion
of the curriculum and
assignment of additional
duties
That trend has
accelerated ever since...

Oh, You Want to See Results? STUDENT LEARNING:
Elementary School– Forward Exam State Test
ELA and Math Reading: We implemented a new resource this year for reading and writing, Units of Study, by Lucy Calkins. It enabled our teachers to use a readers and writers workshop approach to teaching, which is a more effective teaching practice. This resource also strengthened the alignment between grade levels, so that our students are learning the standards in a stronger progression. Our students self-assess and are assessed against rubrics that students are always
referencing.
Math: Most recently we departmentalized in our 4th and 5th grades, so that we could align our teaching practices between the elementary and middle school programs. We sent our teachers to CPM trainings, which is the middle /high school resource, so that the most effective practices could be done at their levels. They also received Add+Vantage Math Recovery training to better enable our teachers to accurately assess the areas of weakness, and provide activities that help students to overcome these obstacles.
Oh, You Want to See Results? STUDENT LEARNING:
Middle School – Forward Exam State Test
ELA and Math ELA: Teachers are implementing Lucy Calkins at the MS level to provide the continuation of the rich literacy from elementary. Our literacy chair is meeting with core teachers to help provide instruction in literacy in the content areas. Our school improvement goal is to move our students from Basic to Proficient on the Forward exam, we will do this through meaningful planning between specialists and classroom teachers so that all students make growth.
Math: Teachers continue to train in and implement CPM. By mapping our scope and sequence we are ensuring that there are no gaps in instruction and skills are introduced and mastered throughout the grade levels and into high school. Our specialists are training in focused math skills instruction and CPM to help support students within the classroom to make growth and close gaps.
Oh, You Want to See Results? STUDENT LEARNING:
High School – ACT State Test
ELA and Math ELA (English Language Arts): Our ELA team at KHS has been observing and collaborating with a Literacy Coach on how to implement a Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop model. This model involves individual student conferences and a list of choice books that meet the standards, but are at the correct level for the reader and are of the reader’s interest.
Math: We continue to have our Math and Special Education teachers participate in professional development in our math series College Preparatory Math (CPM) and AVRM (Add+Vantage Math Recovery). AVRM empowers teachers to use diagnostic assessments and learning trajectories to guide the teaching of numeracy. For next year, we have built in common prep time during the school day to be able to have quality collaboration within their content and with Special Education teachers.
