In these few short years, they have become young men and women, almost ready to take their Pius experience and education out into the real world. I hope that you remember all of our kids in your prayers, and during this final semester, I hope that you will join me in keeping this senior class in a special place in your hearts as they approach graduation. On to other thoughts. The beginning of a new semester is a great time to reset. As we come back from our Christmas break, students should recommit to their school work. It is a time to review expectations for classes and the work expected. Students can expect to continue to be chal- lenged with the rigor of their courses. I also invite you to review with your student some of our expectations and rules from the student handbook, such as dress code(including length of shorts, skirts, and hair; students being clean shaven; and the fact that most sweatshirts and sweatpants are not part of our uniform dress code), attendance rules, grade expectations(especially for activity eli- gibility), our alcohol and drug policy, and acceptable use of technology(cell phones, computers and social media use), and the consequences that go with each of these. I also encourage you to spend some time visiting with your student about bullying and harassment of others. Regularly talking with your student about how to be kind and respectful to others and how to step in when it is the right thing to do to help others can go a long way toward creating a kind and respectful culture in not only our school but our community. While in the handbook, you can start thinking about class registration for next year, which will get started in late January and early February. As I have been learning this year on college visits, it is never too early to begin thinking about that next phase in a student’s life, and the classwork they choose at Pius will help them determine what interests they may develop and how prepared they may be for life after high school. Our construction project is still on schedule for opening in the Fall. It has been exciting to watch the walls go up! Keep an eye on our social media and website, as I’m sure we will begin to offer pictures and inside first looks at what I believe will be an awesome addition to our school. Finally, this is my first newsletter article since the Fall sports season wrapped up. Our student athletes had a very successful season, but I also want to publicly congratulate our student body on our Sportsmanship Award that we earned at the State Volleyball Championships. I am so proud of our students on a daily basis, and I am extremely happy when the rest of the city and state can see what great kids we have in our school and the pride they show in each other and their school. Finding the right guidance counselor

The Pius X Guidance & Counseling Department strives to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to reach his/her full potential. Working in cooperation with faculty, administration, and guidance per-sonnel, school counselors assist students in their social, emotional and spiritual development, as well as provide realistic educational and ca-reer planning opportunities. Stop in anytime to see us or visit us at www.piusx.net and click on “Guidance Office” for excellent information about college testing and preparation for testing, college selection, financial aid, and scholarships.

The Bolt School Newsletter

The health and safety of our students is extremely im-portant to us at Pius X. The health status of a student bears a direct relation to the child’s ability to profit from education-al experiences. Preventing the spread of illness within the school setting is our best tool to keep the students healthy. In order to accomplish this, we need the help and coopera-tion of parents.

If there is any question about the health status of your child, please make arrangements to keep him/her at home. This preventive step benefits your child and his or her class-mates.

At right is a brief sampling of common reasons children should be kept home. There are many more contagious con-ditions which would merit exclusion. If your child is diag-nosed by a licensed health care provider with a contagious condition and has been at school, please notify your school nurse for tracking purposes and take any needed action. Our first concern is for the well-being of each child. If there are concerns regarding your child’s health status please con-tact your school nurse. Thank you for supporting our efforts to keep all our children healthy!

When to keep your student home from school

As parents, you have the ability to guide and support daily habits of your kids. The New Year is an opportunity to recommit to healthy habits for the body, mind and spirit. Maybe your family’s goals are to eat healthier, reduce screen time, pray more often, or spend more time together. You might also consider a resolution that will develop your mind and sup-port better relationships: Read more books! Incorporating reading into your daily rou-tine has plenty of benefits for your overall well- being. Reading has been scientifically proven to improve brain function, and it can help you understand and empathize with others. Perhaps most important of all, your own pas-sion for reading can have a powerful impact on your children. Exposure and access to books is the most effective tool in helping kids develop reading habits. If personal reading isn’t a part of your every-

day life, resolving to carve out even a little bit of time to read may be the trick to rediscovering the joys of reading while helping you better con-nect with your kids at the same time. This is a time consuming commitment, and resolutions are tough to stick to anyway, but the Pius X Li-brary would like to help! We’ve researched all the best tips to get our students reading this year, and to help them be-come lifelong readers. The library can inform students about books, recommend books, talk about books and send books home with them to read. We have thousands of titles available on site, and if we don’t have what you are look-ing for, we can access almost any book from our partner organizations. The Pius X Library is here to support our stu-dents’ reading goals for the New Year. Encour-age your child to make a resolution to visit the library this year!

Resolve to read, from Pius X Librarian Erin Willis

Symptoms for when a child should remain at home

n FEVER: A child, who has had a fever of 100 degrees F. or more, should stay home for at least 24 hours after fever has passed without the use of fever-reducing medications.

n VOMITING: Students who have vomited should remain home for at least 12-24 hours from the last episode and have been hungry for and kept down 2 normal meals.

n DIARRHEA: Students who have loose/liquid stool should remain home until normal bowel patterns return.

n SECRETIONS: Children with significant runny noses and/or profuse cough need to remain home until the secre-tions have diminished to a controllable/containable level.

n GENERAL ACHES/PAINS: If your child has any physical discomforts (i.e. stomach ache, headache, sore throat, etc.), carefully assess your child. Your child should stay home if they have any of the above accompanying symptoms or are too uncomfortable to be able to concentrate in class.

The Pius X Library is here to support our students’ read-

ing goals for the New Year.

Encourage your child to make a reso-

lution to visit the library this

year!

For example, gift annuities offer many benefits for the donor and organization. • Gift annuity rates range from

between 5-11 percent, depending on your age.

• If you have stock or another appreciated asset you can contribute it to a gift annuity and avoid capital gains.

• You receive annual payments.• You fund it with cash, securities,

tangible property or real estate.• Your annual income depends on

your age.• You receive an income tax

deduction for a portion of the value of your gift the year you make it.

• If you desire to make a gift but need stable annual income, a gift annuity is an option.

Pius X Foundation to start series of planned giving seminars Membership in the St. Pius X Legacy Society is available to any-one who informs the Pius X Foundation that they have included Pius X in their will or made our school the beneficiary of any other form of deferred gift. Starting in the spring of 2019, Pius X Foundation will offer annual workshops for continuing education in estate planning and charitable giving. Sessions will be led by qualified professionals and will be de-signed for anyone desiring information on planned giving options.

For more information, contact Courtney Johnson, Pius X Foundation Advancement Director, at [email protected], or call 402-488-1046.

• The asset you use to fund your gift annuity is removed from your estate, saving you possible estate taxes.

charitable gift annuities), • beneficiary of retirement accounts

or life insurance,• real estate, and more.
