upcountry, first know your locality.
We do not want to take people who are just going on
holiday or to spectate; we want to take people on the
team who are going to work, do whatever is asked of them
and witness. Therefore, if you have not attended the
workshops here for witnessing and have not been involved
in the community mission activities but you want to go out
there, I think it is not good preparation for you. We would
love for people to first participate here (Jerusalem) in their
call to missions so we can first get to know you as a team
and when we get to know you and see your gifts,
strengths and skills, then we will know which tasks best
suit you on the mission field. We do not refuse anyone but
we want to know people first then we can know how we
can position you and delegate work, and that is how you
can grow as a person in missions.
It is not the end of the mission season when September goes by. We requested
every ministry team to have a mission program every quarter and not wait for
the mission season. In this way, you and I will in one way or another participate
in missions. The groups will participate in missions and the church as whole
will participate in missions.

1. It appears we as a church have invested so much in missions upcountry. Why? We believe we have invested some time in our church and also in
our community but the greater need is out there because I have
seen it personally. There are people who just have basics, and
these are Pastors who do not have the training you and I have
got or the Bible study groups you go to or the exposure you have
to read and study God’s word. We believe KBC is equipped
enough for each one of us to reach out. So, why we are investing
more out there is because the partnerships we have and the
friends that we have, who have visited those places that are
needy, have seen the greater need. This greater need is the
reason why they have invested their resources to help those
people because they see these people cannot read or study the
Bible and yet they lead congregations – people believe in them
and that is what they have been called to do.
We are investing in leaders and when we invest in leaders, those leaders will
reach out to their communities where we may not go because of language
barrier. So, as long as there are resources and partnerships that believe in what
we are doing and the change that can happen, then we will share the little we
have with our brothers and sisters out there.
2. How does one qualify to join you and your team on those missions upcountry? First of all, it will be good to first participate in the missions here because people
tend to think we do not have missions here. Individuals should come and get
training, get involved, know what missions is all about and how they can be
equipped. I want to appeal to people, before you feel the need to go
The KEY RING is a monthly publication by the Kampala Baptist Church Media
Team that seeks to provide an avenue where men and women can share
knowledge and understanding of the word of God, experiences and
encourage one another as the older perform the act of ‘paralambano’ to the
younger.
Our prayer is that the Lord will speak to you through this publication.
What is Missions? Christian missions is follow-ing Christ’s call: sharing the Gospel with the lost world through God’s wisdom and strength as stipulated in Matthew 28:19 -20. It is sometimes referred to as the “Great Commission” with a specific mandate to Christian believers to go out to the four corners of the earth and make disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Missions can also mean getting out of one’s
comfortable place to reach out to the lost souls as Jesus Christ instructed his believers in Matthew 28:19 -20.
Why Missions? We do it because it is a command from our Lord to go out. Rather than being a burden, obeying His call brings joy and reward in heaven. We should therefore fulfill this call not out of duty but love. “For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (NIV) Also, our Lord is the God of Love. He does not want any person who he created to perish. This is why he is commanding his people – the believers – to reach out to all the non-believers with the good news of our Lord Jesus so that they turn away from evil into his marvelous light.
Who should go on missions? The Bible instructs all believers to participate in missions – telling others about God’s love and the sacrifice of his son to save the world. We are all duty bound to go out on missions. “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can
they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’" Romans 10:14- 15 (NIV)
When we read and study God’s word, it is clear that all should go and witness for Christ. Missions should not be left to the Pastors or for a few individuals who can speak boldly but for all people who call them-selves believers.
How can one prepare to participate in Missions? Although everyone is mandated to participate in missions, it is very important that one should first consider the following: Spend quality time studying and memorizing God’s word and praying for
the lost souls. Participate in and learn from workshops/seminars teaching about missions. Set apart time and go to missions with church teams/groups. After the training, you can start witnessing to your family, friends and the
neighborhood you are familiar with before going beyond your locality.
How can one participate in missions? They can do it at a personal level. They can also do it in a small group setting – cell/zonal groups. They can also participate in church organized mission events taking place
either in the community or beyond their “Jerusalem”. But it is important to start from “your home” or church community so that you learn and gain confidence from others before going to the deeper end.
