Elements of a Novel

Novel – a lengthy fictional work of prose writing

Conflict – a struggle presented within a story – can be internal or external

Theme – the main idea in a literary work, which unifies the characters, setting and other elements of a story

Setting – the time, place, and environment of a story

Narration/point-of-view – the voice in which the story is told

Character

A person, animal or being presented in a novel

Protagonist – the main character, often the hero or heroine of the story (Little Red Riding Hood)

Antagonist – the character who opposes the main character (the Big Bad Wolf)
