Another MagnificentShopping SeasonWhen it comes to shopping, North
Michigan Avenue is so much more than
just another city street – there’s a
reason they call it the Magnificent
Mile, after all. So it should come as no
surprise that the biggest shopping
season of the year is always just a little
bit bigger in this part of town. Lined
with horse-drawn carriages, skillfully
decorated storefronts, holiday carolers,
and delectable treats, this ‘wide street
wonder’ gives visitors a special place
to relish and rejoice during the festive
holiday season.
From behemoth flagships and
world–famous European couture
fashion houses to the newest invasion
of hip overseas contemporary stores
like London’s TopShop, British high
street retailer Allsaints, Sweden’s
H & M, and Spanish clothing and
accessories retailer Zara––the Mag Mile boldly stands as Chicago’s ultimate shop-till-you-drop
holiday destination for globetrotters from all around the world.
This splendid shopping stretch also famously gave birth to the concept of the vertical
shopping mall, paving the way with the illustrious Water Tower Place (835 N. Michigan;
312/440-3166) back in 1975. The block-long atrium-style shopping mall, now anchored by
American Girl Place and Macy’s––and home to distinctive shops like Pandora (7th Floor,
312/915-0647) and Chiaroscuro (2nd Floor, 312/988-9253)––makes for perfect one-stop-shop-
ping on those chilly winter days and nights. But this glitzy stretch is home to more than just
shopping. In fact, right at the base of bustling Water Tower Place mall sits the recently renovated
and fully revitalized Broadway Playhouse theater (800/775-2000), which is currently hosting
two crowd favorites––Love, Loss & What I Wore (through January 1, 2012) and Pinkalicious:
The Musical (through January 7, 2012).
If luxury is what keeps you warm, you won’t need to travel far. Cross the street and step
into the sophistication of The 900 North Michigan Shops (900 N. Michigan; 312/915-3916).
Anchored by Bloomingdales department store, this lavish seven story mall features more than
70 retailers like Gucci and Coach in addition to fine art favorites Atlas Galleries (6th Floor,

The perfect mid-day break, The John Hancock Observatory (875 N. Michigan; 888/875-
VIEW) offers breathtaking views of Chicago’s dazzling skyline and beyond. With views spanning
80–miles, four states and 360–degrees, you’ll experience drop-dead vistas of our great city while
learning about its fascinating history and legendary hotspots with their exciting multimedia Sky
Tour. In addition, their much-anticipated Winter Wonderland is back with a full schedule of
jam-packed weekends including visits from Santa. Their gift
to you: One kid goes free with every full fare adult ticket
(through December 31st).
Find more big-city shopping at The Shops at
North Bridge (520 N. Michigan; 312/327-2300), lo-
cated toward the southern end of the stretch. Home
to the high-fashion retailer Nordstrom, this crescent-
shaped shopping center is stacked four stories high
with unique shops like Italian leather goods emporium,

suggest a memorable cup of afternoon tea at the Palm Court or a bowl of Bookbinder Soup at
Coq d’Or inside the elegant Drake Hotel (140 E. Walton; 312/787-2200). The Drake Hotel has
delighted guests with its elegance and luxury for nearly a century, hosting notable guests like
Judy Garland, Winston Churchill, and Frank Sinatra. Designed in a magnificent Italian Renais-
sance style, this Chicago landmark houses two highly acclaimed restaurants, Drake Bros. and
Cape Cod, the legendary Coq d’Or lounge, two ballrooms, and the Palm Court.

Afternoon Tea is a tradition thatbegan in 1840 by the SeventhDuchess of Bedford. One afternoonbetween 3pm-4pm, after experiencing asinking feeling, she requested a tray of tea, bread, butter, and cake to be brought to herroom. Gradually, she became accustomed tothis habit and invited her friends to partake inher daily ritual. Within a short period of time, this affair, known as Afternoon Tea, became anelaborate social event.

n terms of sheer numbers, the annual December SantaClaus roundup seems to favor the escalators and parkingi
lots of suburban malls. But quantity and quality are two very dif-ferent things. The success of Claus, after all, relies on authenticity, and you can’t spell “authenticity” without “city.”
Merrymakers visiting Chicago will find more rotund beardedmen than they can shake a peppermint stick at during the holiday season. In fact, you can hardly take a break betweenchecking out the holiday windows, shopping for gifts, and grabbing a steaming mug of hot chocolate in this town withoutfinding yourself sitting upon an inviting red velvet lap. Everywhere you turn, it seems, a flying sleigh has deposited itsportly pilot onto an elaborate throne, ready to hear Christmaswishes and dole out the cheer.

A Dilly of a TraditionStockings hanging from the fireplace. A plate
of cookies for Santa. Eggnog. Some holiday
phenomena can only be explained by tradition.
And yet, even at their strangest, many of these
quirky traditions eventually come to define
the Christmas season for many folks. Little
eccentricities that would make little sense at
any other time of year are somehow foregone
conclusions in December.
Take the Pickle in the Pine,
for instance. A distinct
holiday custom for
generations of
Chicagoans,

Berghoff
Restaurant
(17 W. Adams;
312/427-
3170). This
year, families will again come downtown to enjoy a classic meal and a few authentic German brews,
and those kids under 12 who are lucky enough to find a pickle in the tree in the Century Room, will
be treated to a free root beer float. It’s a Merry Christmas – German, by way of Chicago.
After dinner, the Christkindlmarket at nearby Daley Plaza beckons those in search of
even more European holiday tradition (50 W. Washington; 312/494-2175). Now in its 16th
season, this open-air German-style market features over 50 food and craft vendors, selling
everything from bratwurst to blown-glass ornaments. Who knows? You might even find a pickle
for your tree at home.

Macy’s Holiday MagicAlthough the name has changed, the tradi-tion remains the same. From the whimsicallydecorated State Street windows––which thisyear showcases the story behind “The WishFactory”–– to the massive Great Tree risingthrough multiple stories of the building’smain atrium to the long lines of families wait-ing for a prime table at the base of the tree inthe famous Walnut Room restaurant, thisyear’s celebration at Macy’s on State Streetwill give visitors plenty of reasons to believe. After a good thaw and hearty meal, cus-tomers with kids in tow, will surely want toschedule time with the big guy and his jollyold elves perched on the 5th Floor in Macy’sSantaLand®. Santa has been featured in theState Street store since 1948, visiting with millions of children in this space over the
