Background

KTS software is used by various government organizations and engineering fi rms to design and manage road safety and regulation features. KTS customers can access the software through a central network.

In 2007, KTS moved to Sentinel HASP HL. After many years of using this solution, KTS wanted to upgrade their in-house network license model to one which offered greater reliability, better user-controllability, and which could also be used over both wide and local area networks. They also needed a solution which represented value for money.

With a large and distributed user base, KTS needs to provide fl exible, no-hassle access to legitimate users while protecting their intellectual property investment against fraudulent use. They recognized that Sentinel HASP was still the perfect solution for KTS and took advantage of an upgrade proposal.

Business Challenge

After a few years, KTS was ready to make another upgrade to their Sentinel HASP system. While the current HASP HL solution still provided outstanding protection, a high level of fl exibility and control in a single out-of-the-box system; there were a number of advantages that could be gained by implementing a software-based solution. Chris White, software development manager at KTS, comments, “We wanted to launch our AutoSTRIPE software into the Australian and New Zealand markets and it was not practical to enter those markets with a hard lock key.” Simultaneously, a signifi cant portion of the company’s current UK customer base was migrating to servers without USB ports, such as virtualized servers and blade, so hardware dongles were no longer an option.

Rewards

Years after fi rst implementing Sentinel HASP, it’s still a win-win situation. Dr. Jeremy Ellis, Director of KTS, describes the integration process as “straight forward, allowing us to concentrate more on the development and release of our software.” From there, KTS realized immediate returns. Moving to Sentinel HASP SL provided KTS customers with a more fl exible network licensing solution, which in turn increased availability — and revenue. “Software-based licensing reduces costs signifi cantly and when you add the fact that we now have fully-secure electronic distribution and activation you really see the value,” says Chris White.

The Solution

Since Key Traffi c Systems was already a long-time user of Sentinel HASP, implementing HASP SL alongside HASP HL was a logical and straight-forward progression using the familiar HASP toolset. Now, KTS can accommodate all of their end users; still providing the same level of control but with increased fl exibility. The Admin Control Center within the HASP Business Studio, enables centralized tracking of applications and the administration of license managers and protection keys; ultimately distributing electronic keys. Business Studio’s Trialware, also enables customers access to their software immediately, eventually converting the full version of the product by hardware key or by entering an electronic activation code. When referring to integrating Sentinel HASP licensing into KTS’s CRM system, Chris stated, “The Business Studio API is very functional and it comes with a great example that shows you how to do everything. All of our software-based licenses are generated without anyone having to touch the system.”

KTS Operations’ staff can also confi rm that fulfi lling software orders using the Sentinel HASP Business Studio saves a considerable amount of time, sometimes up to 15 minutes per order. It also alleviates error when generating activation codes and makes it possible to instantly and cost-effectively serve foreign markets any time of the day or night.

The new solution was also well received by the KTS user base. “All in all, people are happy about Sentinel HASP SL, it’s transparent to the end user, quick to set up, hassle-free and it does its job!” said Chris.
