God’s Greatest Gift is Meant to Be Shared

STICKY STATEMENT

Share God’s greatest gift.

LESSON OBJECTIVE

Children will learn the truth of the Gospel and will be encouraged to share this great gift with others.

LESSON OVERVIEW

The Romans Road is a great way to share the Gospel. This lesson will review the verses from the Romans Road and encourage the children to use those verses to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. Even though the Gospel message is clear and understandable, it can often feel like a daunting task. That is why it is important to have a tool to help us when we share it. The children will be encouraged to not be ashamed of the Gospel, but to use the Romans Road to share the Gospel with others.

KEY VERSE

GENERAL LESSON INSTRUCTIONS

Teacher’s Note: This lesson is the second of two lessons in a series called “Gospel: The Greatest Gift of God.” It is highly recommended that you teach the lessons of this series in order, one week after the other. The first lesson was designed to share the truth of the Gospel so children can trust Christ as Savior. This lesson is designed to help the children use what they learned to share the Gospel with others. Part of the content of this lesson is a review of the first lesson.

This lesson, like the first, suggests the use of many props. Some will need to be created. Feel free to be as simple or elaborate as you would like with your props. Since both of the lessons in this series use similar props, you can use the props for both lessons.

The first lesson was designed to travel the road to discover each of the parts of the Romans Road. In this lesson, the envelopes will be placed in a gift bag and then delivered to each of the correct mailboxes. Incorporating the Romans Road verses as a review will give the children a tool to use to talk about giving God’s greatest gift.

Begin by posting the Romans Road sign in the room. For a visual effect, either bring five mailboxes (if available) or create five mailboxes from cardboard boxes. Again, be as simple or elaborate as you wish.

Use the address cards to label each mailbox with an “address” that corresponds with the verses from the Romans Road (i.e., 310 Romans Rd., 323 Romans Rd., 58 Romans Rd., 623 Romans Rd., 10910 Romans Rd.). The address cards are available at the end of this lesson.

Address labels to place on the envelopes have been provided for you. They have been formatted to fit on Avery template #94207 (2" x 4" labels) so you could print them and stick them on an envelope. If you choose not to use the labels, write the five addresses on five different envelopes, and draw the symbols on the envelopes as well. Print out the Romans Road verse slips in the version of your choice and cut them apart. Place the Romans Road verse slips and the envelopes into a gift bag. Do not put the verse slips into the envelopes prior to beginning.

Optional: If your budget allows, set up a more creative environment for both of the lessons in this Gospel series. In addition to the mailboxes, use a roll of black plastic tablecloth to create a “road” on the floor of your room. Tape the tablecloth to the floor and use white duct tape to create the dashes on the road. Place your mailboxes along the road.

Fun Fact: The QR code located on the artwork for this Gospel series is a live link that will take you to a website with a “4-minute Crash Course Video” designed to teach you how to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

HOOK

As we begin tonight, I have a few simple questions for you. Does anyone know what this is? [Hold up your toolbox, or show visual #1: the toolbox, and then allow the children to answer.] It is a toolbox. This toolbox has some tools inside that can be used for different projects.

Gospel Lesson 2: God’s Greatest Gift is Meant to Be Shared – 2

Page 3: KEY VERSE Church Teacher... · Web view2020/12/13  · The first lesson was designed to share the truth of the Gospel so children can trust Christ as Savior. This lesson is designed

[Hold up the hammer and/or show visual #2: the hammer.] What would I use this for? [Choose one or two children to answer.] I could use the hammer to pound a nail into a piece of wood, remove nails, etc.

[Hold up the screwdriver and/or show visual #3: the screwdriver.] What about this tool? What is it called? [Allow the children to answer.] What do you use a screwdriver for? [Choose one or two children to answer.] That’s right, a screwdriver is designed to drive in or take out screws.

[Hold up the level and/or show visual #4: the level.] What is this tool called? [Choose one or two children to answer.] What do people use levels for? [Allow the children to answer.] A level is necessary to make sure something is even or level.

Just like you would use tools to build a house or fix something, we can use tools to help us share the Gospel, God’s greatest gift, with others. One of the tools that you can use is called the Romans Road. [Show visual #5: The Romans Road sign or point to your sign hanging in the room.]

LESSON CONTENT

Tonight’s lesson is the second lesson in a two-part series called “Gospel: The Greatest Gift of God.” The two lessons in this series are designed to help you know the truth about the Good News of Jesus, and then you will be able to share that Good News with someone else. If you were here when we talked about the Romans Road, you will know that there are five verses in the Book of Romans that help us know how to have a relationship with Jesus. Those verses are like a road through the Book of Romans that can lead us to the greatest gift we could ever receive.

Speaking of gifts, think about your birthday or Christmas; what is the greatest gift you have ever received? [Allow a few children to answer.] Those are great gifts! It is fun to receive gifts, isn’t it? How many of you like to give gifts? [Allow for a show of hands.] Take a few seconds to tell the person next to you about a gift you gave to someone else. [Allow a few seconds for the children to tell someone a gift that they gave to someone else.]

[Hold up the gift bag with the Romans Road envelopes inside.] Tonight, I brought a special gift that can help us when we want to tell someone about the Gospel. But, before we can see what’s in this bag, let’s review what we learned in the first lesson of our Gospel series. If you were here for that lesson, you may remember this. If not, listen carefully so you will understand.

In the first lesson, we learned about God’s greatest gift for us. It is called the Gospel, or the Good News. We can read about it in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. [Have one of the leaders read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.] Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. He died for us on the cross, but three days later He rose from the dead! Through His sacrifice, we can find forgiveness of sin. If we believe in Him, we no longer have to be separated from God. This is the greatest gift we could ever receive! But God’s greatest gift is something not only to be received; it is also meant to be shared with others.

Let’s see what is in our gift bag. [Take the contents out of the bag and place them on a table.] If you were here for our first lesson, these might look familiar. These are like the envelopes that we received last time as we traveled the Romans Road. We can use the Romans Road as a tool to share God’s greatest gift.

Last time, as we traveled down the “Romans Road,” we found one of the envelopes in each of the mailboxes. This week, let’s share God’s greatest gift by delivering each letter where it belongs.

Teachers Note: This activity will not only reinforce the idea of sharing God’s greatest gift but will also provide the children with the opportunity to review the “Romans Road” as a tool for sharing the Gospel with others.

If you are using the Younger Adaptation, instead of having the child read the verse, have a leader read the verse and the child stuff the envelope and deliver the letter.

Let’s see if we can remember the first stop on the Romans Road. [Choose a child to come help.] Which verse belongs in the envelope for 310 Romans Rd.? That’s right, Romans 3:10. Could you read the verse for us, please? [Allow time for Romans 3:10 to be read.] This verse has a “No” symbol on it to remind us that no one is righteous, or right with God.

Teacher’s Note: Have the child place the verse inside the correct envelope, and then deliver the envelope to the correct mailbox.

If you are using the Younger Adaptation, have an adult read the verse and have the child place the verse inside the correct envelope and then deliver the envelope to the correct mailbox. Once the envelope is delivered, have the child return to his/her seat.

Can anyone remember the second stop on the Romans Road? Who would like to help deliver the second letter? [Choose a child to come help.] Which verse belongs in the envelope for 323 Romans Rd.? That’s right, Romans 3:23. Could you read the verse for us, please? [Allow time for Romans 3:23 to be read.] This verse has a sad face on it to remind us that we all fall short of God’s standard.

Can anyone remember the third stop on the Romans Road? Who would like to help deliver the third letter? [Choose a child to come help.] Which verse belongs in the envelope for 58 Romans Rd.? That’s right, Romans 5:8. Could you read the verse for us, please? [Allow time for Romans 5:8 to be read.] This verse has a cross symbol on it to remind us that Jesus died for us even though we were sinners.

Can anyone remember the fourth stop on the Romans Road? Who would like to help deliver the fourth letter? [Choose a child to come help.] Which verse belongs in the envelope for 623 Romans Rd.? That’s right, Romans 6:23. Could you read the verse for us, please? [Allow time for Romans 6:23 to be read.] This envelope has a gift symbol on it to remind us that even though the payment for sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life. That gift comes through Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection. It is the greatest gift of all!

The last stop on the Romans Road should be pretty simple to know. Who would like to help deliver the final letter? [Choose a child to come help.] Any guesses as to which verse belongs in the envelope for 10910 Romans Rd.? That’s right, Romans 10:9-10. Could you read the verse for us, please? [Allow time for Romans 10:9-10 to be read.] This verse has a heart on it to remind us that we receive the gift of God when we confess that we believe in our heart the truth about Jesus.

That’s the Romans Road! It is a tool that you can use to share God’s greatest gift. So, let’s review.

● [Show visual #6: the “No” symbol.] Romans 3:10 reminds us that no one is righteous.● [Show visual #7: the sad face.] Romans 3:23 reminds us that we all fall short of God’s

standard.● [Show visual #8: the cross.] Romans 5:8 reminds us that Jesus died for us even though we are

sinners.● [Show visual #9: the gift.] Romans 6:23 reminds us that even though the payment for sin is

death, God’s great gift of eternal life comes through Jesus Christ.● [Show visual #10: the heart.] Romans 10:9-10 remind us that we can receive God’s gift of

eternal life when we confess that we believe in our heart the truth about Jesus.

We need to share God’s greatest gift. But sometimes it can be hard to share; it can be scary to tell someone the truth about Jesus. Well, the Book of Romans not only has a road to the Gospel, it has some encouragement for us when we might be scared to share God’s greatest gift.

Listen to what Romans 1:16 says. [Read Romans 1:16.] That verse used the word “ashamed.” What does being ashamed mean? [Allow for some answers, and then show visual #11: the definition of ashamed.] Being “ashamed” means “being unsure about doing something because you are afraid of what others will think.” We don’t need to be ashamed or afraid of what others may think because the Gospel has the power to change lives. So, share God’s greatest gift.

CONNECTION

We want to give you a chance to use the simple tools we learned to share God’s greatest gift. [Hold up one of the Romans Road cards.] We are going to practice using this tool to share the Gospel. All you need is a Bible and this little reminder card. Who would like to come share the Romans Road with us?

Gospel Lesson 2: God’s Greatest Gift is Meant to Be Shared – 5

Page 6: KEY VERSE Church Teacher... · Web view2020/12/13  · The first lesson was designed to share the truth of the Gospel so children can trust Christ as Savior. This lesson is designed

Teacher’s Note: Choose a child to come to the front of the room. Give him/her a Romans Road card and a Bible. Help the child find the Book of Romans and allow him/her to use the card to explain the Gospel to the rest of the group. Give assistance if needed. When finished, affirm their efforts, and ask him/her to return to his/her seat. Give each child a copy of the Romans Road card.

You can share God’s greatest gift too.

CHOICE

If you have never trusted Jesus as Savior, then the Romans Road was for you tonight. We shared it with you so you can know how to have eternal life. If you have never trusted Jesus as Savior, tonight can be the night for you to believe in Jesus. If you would like to put your faith in Jesus tonight, when you get to your Personal Training (PT) Huddle group, say this to your PT Coach, “I want that gift.” That will let our PT Coach know to help you trust Jesus as Savior before doing anything else during PT time.

Teacher’s Note: This may lead to an opportunity to share the Gospel message in greater depth with children who have not yet made a profession of faith. For help in this matter, reference the file at https://teachersource.wol.org/resource/OBS20/14-3/.

If you believe in Jesus as Savior, will you make a commitment to share the Romans Road with someone this week? If so, tell God that you are not ashamed of the Gospel; ask Him to help you share His greatest gift with someone this week. [Allow the children to pray.]

NEXT STEPS

The Next Step for this week is simple. Use your Romans Road card and your Bible to share the Gospel with someone. You might want to begin by sharing in your PT Huddle group and then again with your parents or guardians when you get home. When you get the chance, share God’s greatest gift this week with a friend.

YOUNGER ADAPTATION: (Lesson Content)

Teacher’s Note: Instead of having the children read the verse, have an adult read the verse, and have the child place the verse in the envelope and deliver the letter to the correct mailbox.

PERSONAL TRAINING TIME

The Goal of the Personal Training Huddle: To review the Romans Road and then challenge the children to use the Romans Road to share God’s greatest gift.

Discussion Questions

Personal Trainer’s Note: During the lesson, the teacher should have invited any child who wants to trust Jesus as Savior to say, “I want that gift” to you when they get to PT Huddle. If a child wants to trust Christ, make that the focus of the PT Huddle group. Use the Romans Road card to help them understand the truth of the Gospel, and then invite them to trust Christ. It would be wise to allow the other children in the group to use the Romans Road card to share the Gospel with the child. Assist where needed.

1. What is the Gospel? (This question is designed to see if the children really understand the truth of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It should be evident from their answers if they know the truth of salvation. If they don’t, be sure to share the truth about salvation. Make sure they understand that they can’t do anything to earn salvation; salvation is the gift of God.)

2. Who would like to use their Romans Road card and Bible to share the Gospel with us? (Allow one or two children to share the Gospel with the group. If no one volunteers, use the card to have each of the children explain one part of the Romans Road. Take time to practice sharing the Gospel with each other.)

3. Who is someone you could share God’s greatest gift with this week? (Have the children share the name of one person whom they could share the Gospel with this week. As the PT Coach, be sure to share the name of someone you could share the Gospel with this week. Be sure to write down each of the names and take the time to pray for each person mentioned.)

PARENT CONNECTION

Tonight’s lesson was the second lesson in a two-part series called “Gospel: The Greatest Gift of God.” The first lesson was designed to help your child know the truth about the Good News of Jesus. This lesson was designed to help your child share that Good News with someone else. The Book of Romans has several verses that can be used to share the Good News of Jesus with others. Those verses have been called “The Romans Road.” The children learned how to share the verses from the Romans Road with others. The truth of the Gospel is simple. Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Jesus was the payment for sin when He died on the cross. Because of that, Jesus is the only way to God. This is God’s greatest gift to us, and He wants us to share His gift with others. We asked your child to think of one person whom he/she could share with this week. Your child was given a Romans Road card. Ask your son or daughter about the Romans Road. Have them explain to you the verses on their card.
