Dr. Betty Neuman is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the field of nursing as the developer of The Neuman Systems Model (1970). A native of Ohio, she received her Diploma of Nursing

from Peoples Hospital (now Akron General Medical Center) as part of the Cadet Nursing program. She received an honorary Doctorate of Science from Grand Valley State in 1998 and an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Neumann College in 1992. She is the author and editor of The Neuman Systems Model, now in its fifth edition. She remains active as a consultant within the U.S. and worldwide on the implementation of her model.

Keynote “Pearls and Pitfalls of Interventional Research in the Pediatric Population” Ann-Marie Brown, PhD, CPNP-AC/PC, CCRN, FCCM

Ann-Marie Brown completed her BSN at the University of Akron, MSN at Kent State University, and PhD through the joint program at The University of Akron/Kent State University. Her 30+ year career has

focused entirely in pediatric critical care, primarily in the Pediatric ICU. She was the first NP in the PICU at Akron Children’s Hospital, where she still maintains her clinical practice. She is a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and her leadership roles include nurse representative for North America on the Board of Directors for the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societ-ies. She is the lead for the acute care pediatric NP program at Emory University in Atlanta. Her program of research on nutrition in critically ill and injured children has spanned more than a decade, with a focus on nurse driven methods to optimize nutrition delivery, feeding intolerance, symptom management and relationship to clinical outcomes.

Since retiring from Summa Health System in 2016, Barbara Brunt has been working as an education consultant. She has functioned in various educational and administrative roles for 40 years and has published extensively and

presented on a variety of topics locally and nationally. She is the content editor for TrendLines, a monthly newsletter for the Association for Nursing Professional Development and is also a surveyor for joint accreditation and nursing continuing education through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Ms. Brunt maintains certification in Nursing Professional Development, as well as a Nurse Executive. She received a Master’s Degree in Community Health Education from Kent State University and a Master’s in Nursing from the University of Dundee in Scotland. She continues to be actively involved in numerous nursing professional organizations, is Chair of the Advisory Board for the Kohl Family YMCA and continues to volunteer at Summa.

The Neuman Award was established in honor of Dr. Betty Neuman for her distinguished contributions to the nursing profession. Each year the Neuman award is given to a member for the nursing profession who has made significant contributions to the profession as a nursing educator, leader or clinician.
