6th June 2019
From the Principal
Last week we celebrated Education Week. This was the 75th consecutive year that Education Week has run
and the state-wide theme for 2019 was “Celebrating Careers”.
Education Week is a great opportunity for schools to open their doors to the community and showcase the
great work that they and your children are doing. To invite family and friends to come into our school and
admire the many art installations on display.
You may think that Primary School children are too young to be thinking about careers but the truth is that choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you will make in life. It's about so much more than deciding what you will do to make a living. If you think about how much of your life you will actually spend working, you can understand just how important it is to be doing something that you enjoy.
So this week we focused on the many and varied careers available to our children. We encouraged them to start thinking about their “Dream Job” and to make those dreams big. They were to think about all of the career choices available to them and then focus on the ones that excited them or peaked their interest. I like many things in life, it is much easier to find your way to somewhere, if you first know where it is your going.
This is how the week unfolded.
On Monday, the students all made stick people. They first drew on and coloured their stick people to represent a career path they would like to take. After cutting out their completed person, it was then attached to a stick and displayed around the school. Mrs Koskolos made a few stick people as an example to the students and then encouraged them to let their imaginations run wild. With hard work and determination, there is no goal that cannot be achieved.

On Tuesday, I sat in front of the entire school and read “Josephine Wants To Dance” to our students.
“Josephine Wants To Dance” is a story about dream, believing in yourself….and a dancing kangaroo. Josephine is a kangaroo – who loves to dance. Her little brother Joey, tells her that kangaroos don’t dance, they hop – buy Josephine continues to point her toes and leap through the air. When a ballet troupe comes to town and both the lead ballerina and the understudy are injured, Josephine’s talents are called upon to help save the day. Can she do it and, more importantly, does it matter that she’s a kangaroo?
It’s a beautiful story. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend that you do.
After finishing the story, the students went outside to the agora area and completed chalk drawings of their dream jobs in groups of 3 or 4. Each student group had a mixture of older and younger students and the beautiful drawings they created were completed on a cloud background to symbolise their dreams. I wish that I could show you all of the photographs as the drawings were truly inspiring. Not only because they were skilfully executed in wonderful colour, but because they represented the dreams and aspirations of our children.
On Wednesday, our students enjoyed an Oz Opera performance of “The Barber of Seville”.
Oz Opera is the touring arm of Opera Australia, who since 1996 has been delivering fully staged, specially adapted performances of popular operas Australia wide. Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” is a romantic comedy that revolves around Rosina the pretty young maid, Count Almaviva the man who falls in love with her, and Figaro the local Barber who tries to help them against Rosina’s aunt’s wishes.
The production was wonderful and our students loved it. The four main characters were very engaging and soon had the audience involved with the story line. I watched as even our youngest students “Booed and Cheered “appreciating that the performance had been perfectly adapted to appeal to school aged children.
On Thursday, we had open day. Families and friends were invited to attend school throughout the day to walk around and admire all of the wonderful things that our students have been doing this Term. Classrooms became galleries as much of our student work went up on display. Coffee was made available during the visit and the CEIT team served ice creams for free from the canteen. It was a cold afternoon, but that didn’t seems to stop our students from eating the treat.
Friday was “Dream Job” dress up day. Students came to school dressed as the professional that they one day hoped to be. At assembly, all the students paraded around the hall and displayed their stick people from the activity on Monday. I tried to get around to all the classes but only seemed to manage a few. It was wonderful to see so many students and teachers dressed up for the day and having such fun.
At assembly, each year level performed an item or presentation and the whole school joined in singing “A Million Dreams” from the movie, “The Greatest Showman” beautifully presented by the Year 4 students. Our younger students sang whilst our older students presented works studied during the Term and Year 6 showed a presentation made up of photos from the Leadership Camp.
Year 3 presented a very interesting cultural item. So interesting in fact, it deserves its own story. Hopefully, I will be able to show it to you next week.
Lyrics “A Million Dreams”
Every night I lie in bed The brightest colours fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see A million dreams is all its gonna take
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make
They could not have selected a more appropriate song. Today’s students will decide how the world will be in 50 or 100 years from now, may they always dream big and may they always dream in colour. Have a great weekend everyone Leanne Armao
NPSSA District Cross Country
On Thursday, 30th May, 59 students from Years 4-6 competed in the NPSSA District Cross Competition at Wachter Reserve. These students qualified for the event after finishing in the Top 10 in the House Cross Country that took place earlier in the term. In very challenging and near arctic conditions all KPS students tried their best in running the 2km (9/10 Year Olds) and 3km (11 & 12 Year Olds) course. KPS finished a very pleasing 4th position out of 12 competing schools. The 9/10 Girls team, in particular, were outstanding clearly winning their age group by 67 points. Congratulations to the following individuals who finished in the Top 10 for their race and have thus qualified for the Greater Dandenong Division Cross Country that takes place on Friday, 7th June at the same venue:
