From the Principal
PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY
On Monday the 28th October, Mr Tony Luo from the Victorian Planning
Authority, visited our school to assume the role of Principal for a Day.
This wonderful program offers a first-hand experience of a “day in the life” of
a Victorian School Principal and provides mutual benefits for schools and our
business/community leaders.
We were very excited to welcome Mr Tony Luo to KPS who looked forward to exchanging ideas, visiting classes, talking
to students and parents and taking part in normal day to day activities. I am sure that the day gave him a unique
insight into the learning environment at our school.
The Principal for a Day program aims to:
Increase understanding and awareness between school, business and the wider community
Promote the great work that schools do
Provide business and community leaders with first hand and current experiences at schools
Enable school principals to develop ongoing relationships with leaders from other spheres
Increase opportunities for schools and the community to work together in mutually beneficial ways
Over the course of the day, Mr Luo visited most areas within the
school, met with students leaders and facilitated a presentation to
the Year 5 level around the local Precinct Structure Plan (PSP).
Students were given the opportunity to consider changes they would
like in the suburb where they live and asked to develop a vision for
the future.
Tony concluded the session by asking the students for some key
ideas that would help make this suburb meet that vision. He
wondered what changes they might make to improve the area.
A cycling ground, better play equipment, renewable energy and a new park were just some of the many ideas discussed.

Future Making for Every Student
DIWALI
Diwali is the famed festival of lights, which originated in India thousands of years ago. More than one billion people
are estimated to celebrate the festival every year with startling shows and camera displays lighting up the streets.
Several religions observe the festival, including Sikhs, Hindus Jains and sometimes Buddhists. Diwali commenced on
Sunday 27th of October and runs for a period of five consecutive days.
Day 1 Dhanteras – the day of fortune
Lakshmi, goddess of general wellbeing and prosperity, are worshipped.
Money is ceremonially purified by washing it in milk, to symbolise the renewal of good intentions towards it and the motivation to use it to benefit family and the greater good. It is also a time for sharing wealth with those one considers deserving and to replace feelings of greed with generosity.
This spiritual reinvigoration makes it an auspicious day for buying gold and silver, often jewellery, so this day is also a major shopping day.
Day 2 Naraka Chaturdasi – the day of knowledge
This day is related to the traditional story of Lord Krishna slaying the demon Narakasura and rescuing 16,000 captive princesses.
As the princesses' chastity could be called into question, Lord Krishna married them all to take care of his people and offer them protection. Rice is used to make rangoli patterns on or before the day.
Day 3 Diwali – the day of light
Fireworks are lit to mark the high point of the festival. It is the last day of the Hindu year in many regions, when businesses close old accounts.
On this day, Lord Rama rescued his wife from the demon Ravana after an epic battle. When he returned home, his people lit up his path home so he could find his way in the dark.
Today, candles are lit to show the triumph of good over evil and homecoming. Gujarati Indians among others also light lamps in their windows to welcome Lakshmi into the home.
Day 4 Annakut – New Year
Food is piled up at Hindu temples as an offering to Krishna in the festival of Govardhan Puja. The mountain of food is symbolic of Govardhan Hill.
In this traditional story, Krishna lifted the hill to shelter villagers from a flood caused by the vengeful Indra, King of Heaven. As it was with Indra, Hindus learn to be humble in the face of the divine.
Day 5 Bhai Duj – day of love between siblings
Brothers commonly give their sisters gifts on Bhai Duj.This was traditionally one of the few days when brothers could visit their married sisters' homes, to ensure they were being well cared for.
Much of the traditional gift-giving during Diwali is from men to women. This is to show them respect and offer them protection.
To all of our families here at KPS – we wish you a happy Diwali.
DAY FOR DANIEL COLOUR RUN
Last Friday 1st November 2019 we held the Day for
Daniel Colour Run on the oval and it was absolutely the
most fun I have had in a long time.
The weather was perfect and friends and families came
out to support our wonderful students as they
completed laps around the oval in support of the Daniel
Morcombe Foundation who educate both individuals
and communities on safety strategies for children.
Through our Day for Daniel Colour Fun Run, we hope to
raise funds to support the Foundation in their mission to
make Australia a safer place for all children.
During the afternoon, participating students could
either opt to run on a colour free track, a coloured
powder track or a coloured paint track.
Having crossed the finish line, they were sprayed with all the colours of the rainbow in
paints or powders that the manufacturers assure us will wash out of their clothes.
Coming just one day after the final day of Diwali, it reminded me of the Indian custom of celebrating “Holi” and the
festival of joy and colours.
A fantastic afternoon was had by all, teachers and students alike.
Families and friends turned out to watch the event as the children
ran for Daniel.
First they were splashed with water in order to make the paint or
powder stick a little better and then as they moved around the
course, our teachers sprayed them every chance they got. As you
can see, our teachers did not stop there.
They joined in the spirit of the occasion and sprayed each other at every
opportunity. It’s lovely to see the whole school community come together in such
a fun way whilst still raising much needed funds for such a worthwhile foundation.
Total funds raised were in excess of $2500.00.
A big thank you to Oliver in 2A who was our biggest fund raiser on the day.
Well done everyone!
Have a wonderful weekend.

2020 Enrolments
Starting school for the very first time is a very special milestone for both child and parent. At Keysborough Primary School we accept enrolments during the year from the beginning of school to the end of the year. For 2020, it is time to enrol your child or children in our school. Very shortly we will begin planning for our 2020 classes and to do this we need to know how many students will be attending our school next year. Children wanting to start Prep must be five years of age (or older) by the 30th of April in the year they start school. If you would like a tour of the school, or need assistance in completing the enrolment form, please contact the office either by phone (9798 4764) or visit in person. This will help to ensure that the correct enrolment form is completed and that the transition for you and your child is as smooth as possible.
RESPECTFUL RELATIONS
Our staff and students are learning about Respectful Relationships from Prep to Six.
It would be interesting to ask your child what they are learning about at the moment.
Bropunzel: If Rapunzel was a guy.
Parents use the above link to see the whole story.
Slip, Slop, Slap In Term 4, students will need a broad brim hat or a legionnaire hat to be outside in the yard for outdoor activities, including sport and play. Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world. Ensure your child brings a Keysborough Primary School hat to school or leaves a hat in their room to put on for sun protection as part of their daily routine.
National Recycling Week is almost here!
