No 34 Wednesday 6th 2019 KFPS News Dear students, parents and friends, Welcome to Week 5 of this term. I must say we are experiencing some incredible swings in the weather! Warm weather, wind, rain, sunshine, thunderstorms, hail, wind, sunshine. It may be a little unpredictable at present but our expectations remain that all students need to be wearing a sun smart hat and clothing needs to be labelled as we have a growing number of jumpers that are finding themselves in our lost property tub. I would encourage all families to keep checking the calendar and the LED sign outside to keep in the loop. NO CANTEEN THIS WEEK A reminder note was sent home on Monday of this week informing families that the canteen will not be open and available for lunches this week due to Rayelene taking leave this week. The canteen will resume its normal hours of operation next week. We thank parents/carers for their support. Planning for 2020 – Parent Input invited Class structure for 2020 Class structures Next year we will have 12 classes across our school. With consideration for the student numbers at each grade level, the decision about the structure of the classes is as follows: 2 classes x Foundation 3 classes x Grade 1/2 3 classes x Grade 3/4 2 classes x Grade 5 2 classes x Grade 6 There is an opportunity for you to provide information to the school based on educational or social grounds which you believe is important for us to consider when making our 2020 class placements. This information needs to be in writing. Please forward this to me by Friday 15th November. Late information will not be able to be consid-ered. Class placements will be made taking this information into account, along with class numbers, gender mix, social and academic needs. The decision made at the conclusion of this process will be final and no changes will be made unless there is evidence that a clear error was made. This process is not about naming a preferred teacher.

REMINDERS: Upcoming dates and events to note. Kangaroo Flat Remembrance Day service Next Monday 11th November, our school choir and school captains will be attending the Remembrance Day service to be held at the Kangaroo Flat memorial Park and cenotaph. Students attending this very special service must be in school full uniform and bring their hat and water bottle. The bus will leave the school at 10:15am to be ready for the 10:45am service. Student Support Group Meetings – next week. Next week we will be holding our Student Support Group meetings on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th Novem-ber for those families who have a scheduled SSG for each term. Wendy will be in contact with you to finalise times/arrangements for these meetings. We really appreciate the opportunity to meet with parents/carers to discuss the progress of their child/ren – the home-school partnership is exceptionally important to us and for the success of student outcomes.

School Council A reminder to our school councillors, next Tuesday 12th November we have our November council meeting commencing at 6:45pm. School Council papers and documentation will be emailed later this week.

Parent Club fundraiser – Friday 15th November – Out of uniform & Crazy hair A casual clothes/crazy hair day will be held on Friday 15th November as a fundraiser for the Parent& Friends Club. Students will be expected to pay a gold coin donation to come dressed out of uniform and wearing a crazy hair do for the day. Last year this was so much fun to see the effort that a number of students put into their hair styles. Think colour, think 80’s big, think CRAZY!! Thought of the week Kind Regards, Kim Saddlier Principal

Grade 3-6 Bike Ed/Grade Prep-2 Scooter Ed Starting week 4, all students in grades 3-6 will be participating in a Bike Education unit., and grades prep-2 in Scooter Education. This will be conducted during PE classes and students are encouraged to bring their own bikes/scooters if possible. We have bikes/scooters at school for those who cannot get their own to school but we ask that as many as possible bring helmets (even if you haven’t got a bike or scooter) as we have a few, but not enough to cover a whole class. If you have any queries please contact Travis Colley at the school. Classes are as follows: Rooms 7 & 3 Monday, Room 13 Tuesday, Rooms 8, 12,14, 4 Wednesday, Rooms 5,18, 19 Thursday and 6, & 9 Friday.

Breakfast Club Hamper:

We are a lucky school to have a breakfast program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Tuesday and Thursday we have some very helpful students and on Wednesday we have very caring

helpers from the Anglican Church. This week we are holding a raffle that cost nothing, just come to Brekky Club to enter!! It has milk, Cheerios, Weetbix, Baked beans, Fruit and Oats in the hamper. This will be drawn on Friday at assembly. You better hurry, your last chance to enter is tomorrow.

Writing Extension Program

This week students began looking at persuasive texts. We have worked on gathering all of our ideas for and against a particular topic, before we choose a side. Students worked in small groups to brainstorm ideas about a particular aspect of school (for example – recess times should be longer). After brainstorming, students picked their side. We spent lots of time talk-ing about how to order arguments to tighten the tension and convince our reader to agree with our point of view. This week’s Writers of the Week are: Gumnut Neighbourhood: Ruby S (room 6) Ruby’s topic: all classes should have free time for the last hour of the day.

Ruby is for this and her 3 strongest arguments are:

Children can learn to work together in free time

Children have more time to do whatever they want

Children should have free time so teachers can do work

Grevillea Neighbourhood: Ava O (room 14) Ava’s topic: school should finish earlier

Ava is for this and her 3 strongest arguments are:

You can spend more time with your family

If you are away for the day you actually miss less school

You will have more time to rest and be better for the next morning at school

Well done to all students – we can’t wait to read your completed persuasive texts!

Lateness Please ensure your child is at school for the start of the day. It is hard not to notice the number of students arriving late each morning. School commences at 8:50am. In classrooms on most days, students begin with the Literacy Block. One hour of Reading and one hour of Writing. Time missed is not time that can be reclaimed. Being late to school will impact student’s learning. Being punctual is an important life skill also.

Times for the school day: 8:50am – 11:20am: Learning Session 1 11:20am: Eating time 11:30am – 12pm: 1st recess (30 minutes) 12pm – 1:30pm Learning Session 2 1:30-2pm: 2nd recess (30 minutes) 2:00pm – 3:00pm Learning session 3
