But anyone who can assist with basic keyboard skills or with copying, folding or delivering is most welcome to help join in and keep it running to Heather's high standard. please contact Anne Heading or email [email protected].

Landscaping WorkThe landscaping work at the front of the school is now complete and we are now thinking about planting in the area. New trees are planned, the bricks need relocating, the flower bed near the front door is scheduled for a makeover and the fish needs a mosaic eye! We will be asking the children to get involved in the design of these elements and look forward to their creative ideas!

Class Assemblies

Our class assemblies have started again this term with Class 1 sharing their topic work on ‘Fairy Tales’ with their proud parents. They made some fantastic puppets of fairytale characters and gave a wonderful rendition of the song ‘When Goldilocks went to the house of the bears’.

Special Lunches

Mrs Atkinson, our school cook, prepared a delicious Chinese New Year Lunch to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. The menu for the day was sweet and sour chicken and vegetable stir fry, served with rice and noodles. There was also a fortune cookie for each child.

We are also looking forward to welcoming our Reception mums for lunch this month which I am sure will be very popular.

Sri Lanka link

Our school is linked with a school in Sri Lanka, Nissanka National School, a large primary school in the Monaragala district. The purpose of the link is to increase our children’s knowledge and understanding of life in a very different country. Mrs Wilson will visit Sri Lanka during the February half term holiday, along with eight other teachers from schools in this part of North Yorkshire. She will visit our partner school each day and bring back lots to share with the children. Later in the year a teacher from our partner school will make a reciprocal visit and spend a week in our school.

A reminder that if you want to keep in touch with what's happening in school our website address is www.kirkbyandgreatbroughtonschool.ik.org.

Neighbourhood Watch 101 The new police number for non urgent matters 101

Local Co-ordinators - Kirkby - David Chadwick 712105 Gt. Broughton - Jim Watson 711406

Our problem solving officer is PC Glyn Jones. Our PCSO is Terry Rodgerson.

Police Report, by Terry Rodgerson PCSOThe new Police non emergency number 101 went live on Monday 12 December 2011, and is shared with North Yorkshire, Durham, Cleveland, Cumbria and Northumberland forces. Calls cost 15p minute.

Following reported burglaries in the Stokesley and Gt Ayton areas prior to Christmas, Stokesley Police carried out targeted patrols under the title Operation Bright, and left advice on crime prevention and leaving a light on in dark apparently unoccupied houses. As a result of these patrols there have been no burglaries reported since 19 December 2011.

Gt Ayton officers are working with partnership agencies including Broadacres and Great Ayton Parish Council to set up Great Ayton Boxing Club to Amateur Boxing Association standards, in the Working Mens Club. There are experienced coaches and a lot of interest from the local community. It is hoped the club will start at the beginning of April 2012, and will have two classes, a 9-16 year old class, and a 16 years plus class. We are looking for volunteers, including a club secretary. If you can help with the club, either taking part in being trained or as a volunteer please contact North Yorkshire Police or Broadacres.

Terry Rodgerson will hold a Beat Surgery in The Little Shop on Great Broughton High Street on Tuesday 7 February between 9.00am and 10.30am to discuss any issues, answer any queries or generally set the world to rights. She will be visiting pupils at Kirkby and Great Broughton Primary School in early February as part of the National Safer Internet Day, We will look at how we use the internet, discussing and practicing ways in which we can protect ourselves and our information when we are online.

Following a recent report of theft of a motor vehicle from Great Broughton please remember to keep yourself and your property safe and secure. During the long dark nights it pays to be extra vigilant, Remember most crime is opportunist and criminals like to avoid being seen or identified. The most obvious and simple advice is quite often the most effective way of preventing crime. Never leave valuables on open view in an unattended vehicle, and always lock your vehicle when it is unattended. Make sure your house is well lit when you’re out, outside lights should be left on and timer switches used for indoor lighting. Tell your neighbours and/or watch members if you are going away to enable them to keep an eye on your property and report any suspicious activity. Where possible prevent unauthorised access to the rear of your property by locking garden gates. The entry point for most burglaries is at either the side or rear of properties where surveillance from neighbours and passers by is least likely.

Please advise any elderly neighbours not to open their doors to callers unless they know who is at their door. If the caller is unknown and hasn’t pre-arranged a visit then it is nothing that can’t wait.

Keep sheds and outbuildings locked and don’t leave valuables on display. Blank out or curtain

Page 8: KGB Church Magazine Feb 2012

any windows to prevent the opportunist looking in. Battery operated shed alarms can be purchased from Community Safety at Hambleton District Council for approx. £15. Shed bars are available: www.dgsecurity.co.uk an approved company endorsed by the Association of Chief Police Officers through their flagship crime prevention initiative, Secured BY Design.
