Description: -

The problem that I have selected is one of very important in its kind. During the visit of our

class at Bhitai Abad community for community assessment, I observed the improper

management of drainage water in the community. There is a big drainage canal flowing

through the community which is causing health hazards to the community that can be seen on

the satellite picture taken from Google earth provided with my reflective log. Beside this the

small drains at the community were also not in good condition. Some of the main holes were

uncovered.

My Feelings: -

I was not feeling so surprising, because in a country like this in which we hear the news of

bomb blasts every day, the improper drainage system of the community keeps no importance.

But I feel that it is matter that needs attention, because it is causing significant health hazards

to the community, both directly and indirectly.

Literature review/ analysis: -

When I analyze this entire situation being a medical professional, I observe the impact of this

kind of environment from diverse perspectives. First of all hygiene is the basic component of

any human settlement. The large open drainage canal flowing through the community is a site

of mosquito breeding which subsequently causes malaria. Due to the presence herbs it is also

a big source of the breeding of other insects, rodents and snakes. Children playing in the

streets can become the victim of the drowning in to the drainage water; hence it is hazardous

from the children’s safety view point. The literature that I have revised, say that the drainage

system should be covered/ it should be away from population or measures should be taken to

prevent mosquito breeding.

Plan/ Suggestions: -

The reason behind these circumstances is the lack of resources and the mismanagement of the

available resources. There is the dire need of correction of these issues. Otherwise the people

will continue to suffer in the same way. To improve the situation all the concerned persons

should take steps to solve the problem. Government should make sure the proper

maintenance of the drainage system. People should realize the problem and should make

efforts to emphasize the government and we as the students of community health nursing

should create the awareness in people about the consequences. A mosquito control program

can also be started. Mosquito control manages the population of mosquitoes to reduce their

damage to human health, economies, and enjoyment. Mosquito control is a vital public-health

practice throughout the world and especially in the tropics because mosquitoes spread many

diseases, such as malaria.
