Next week Mrs Steel, Mrs Mossman and I are visiting both Ormiston and Alfreston colleges in Auckland as part of our review of the Year 9 and 10 curriculum. Both of these schools have been developing an innovative approach to Year 9 and 10 education and we are interested to see how this may work here at Amuri and how this may contribute to our curriculum review process.

Across the country schools are looking to see how they can best cater for this age group that sits squarely between the requirements of National Standards and NCEA and we see this is as an incredibly important time in a young person’s education with the prime focus of preparing our students for level 1 and in particular ensuring the literacy and numeracy levels are sufficient for their needs.

CASAFEST planning continues and yes we are still short of beds so if you were holding out until we really, REALLY need you then the time has come. Thanks to the many families who have agreed to host (some up to 6 billets) we really cannot pull off this event without you.

We are hoping for good weather and the forecast looks good for the T Ball at Scargill Domain and Softball here at Amuri on Tuesday for our primary students as part of the Hurunui Primary Sports competition.

Please note again the rescheduled date for the Secondary Parent information evening of the 28th March and the PTA will be holding their AGM alson on the 28th March at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Our new format for assembly is coming together nicely and capably led by our Head students Toby Sloan and Emilee Hickee. The whanau contributions are a real delight and I am enjoying seeing the students taking a greater sense of ownership over our fortnightly gatherings. Parents and community are always welcome to attend.

Lastly I would like to congratulate Tayla Moriarty & Casey Smith for their success in horse-riding (see Mrs Mossman’s piece) and commend Angie Mones-Cazon who demonstrated such bravery singing a beautiful song from the movie Moana at this week’s assembly.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWSA change in the weather this week has brought with it colder temperatures and the need for more clothing layers to keep warm. At the risk of sounding like a broken record the school policy around puffer jackets or similar is clear – they can be worn to and from school but not in class. The uniform has both a jersey/cardigan and polar fleece options and these are what we expect to see in class. Many students have come to school this week with only jackets over lightweight shirts or blouses and this creates a problem around being warm enough when the jacket is off. The wearing of a school uniform and the wearing of it with pride is the wish of this school community and we would ask that you please support us in maintaining an appropriate and correct level of dress.

On a positive note, we are very proud of 2 of our Year 13 students and their equestrian achievements. Casey Smith gained a 2nd place in the Junior Show Hunter and 3rd in the Open Show Hunter at the NZ Show Jumping and Hunter Show at McLean’s Island recently. Well done Casey. Congratulations also to Tayla Moriarty who is in the Canterbury Pony Club team that will compete in Whangerai in the coming holidays. We wish Tayla and the team every success. Like all people competing at a National level both Tayla and Casey have huge demands on their time in and out of school – a challenge they are both managing well.

A reminder about the rescheduled secondary parent afternoon on Tuesday 28th – this is the perfect opportunity to gain a valuable insight into curriculum progression from Years 9-13 and the range and variety of options available at Amuri for all students.

Senior students are now well underway with assessments - as parents it is a good idea to have a look at the course outline for each of your child’s subjects and note when assessments will be occurring. Many teenagers are reluctant to discuss their learning and progress at home, but to best support your child, understanding what they are doing and when is a good place to start. Please if you have any questions or concerns or need clarification around NCEA do not hesitate to make contact. No question is a silly question.

Billet Hosts Required during CASAFEST (Our Canterbury Area Schools Sporting and Cultural event that we host once every 6 years)Tuesday 11-Thursday 13 April (2 nights)Please contact us if you have a spare bed or two or three. We need to find beds for another 100 extra students (thanks to those that have already offered) for these two nights. Lunches and dinners will be provided at school. All you need to supply is a bed and breakfast for two days. The students need to be picked up from school on Tuesday evening approx 8.30pm. On Wednesday the students are in Hanmer Springs for the day. They will have a swim and dinner in Hanmer and buses will leave around 7pm. There will be buses to Waiau, Rotherham and Culverden townships.Please phone the school office 315 8233 if you are able to help.

Parent Teacher Information Meeting – Years 9 - 13Parents and students are invited and strongly encouraged to attend our secondary parent information meeting. The format of the meeting will be presentations from the Heads of Essential Learning Areas outlining what the curriculum looks like from Years 9-13 and the pathways to NCEA. There will also be an NCEA information presentation and an opportunity at the end for questions. This will take place on Tuesday 28th March in the Community Room starting promptly at 3.15 pm. Presentations will be 15 minutes with a 5 minute break between to allow for set up. The PTA will be providing refreshments and the whole secondary team look forward to meeting you at this important information afternoon.

“Competitions”

There are a lot of competitions available for students wanting a challenge, in science, maths, english, digital technologies and robotics opportunities. I am sure there are others that I have not heard about yet too. Most competitions involve a small cost (under $10), a few are free and some are more expensive. I have started collating information on the deadlines for entries, costs and dates of competitions. There is a copy of the list to date at reception, or students can see me at school. I am not running all the competitions but I can tell you who is.I am running ICAS competitions though, and the deadline for parents and whanau to tell me they want their sons and/or daughters to enter those is next Wednesday, 22 March.

Our Bus Drivers serve us well,Sometimes they need a little spell.

They try their best and pass the test,Always arriving, sometimes after the rest.

ROAD WORKS affect the timetabled routes,Advanced warning - not always produced.

In our area there are 9 school buses,We try to please with minimum fusses.

BUS TURN AROUND / DENTAL ACCESS

Due to safety concerns please no not use the bus turn around between 8.15-9.00am and 2.50-3.20pm.
