FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

On Thursday 22 November, I had the opportunity to attend the NSW Secondary Principal’s Council (SPC) State Assembly which allowed me to learn how the peak principal body works to support Kiama High School. I learnt a lot and feel that current issues related to public secondary schooling is in good hands. The following information comes from the SPC website:

Within the Australian education environment, the New South Wales Secondary Principals’ Council (NSWSPC) is a professional body which represents Principals of government schools and colleges in New South Wales that have secondary school enrolments. These schools include government high schools, colleges, central schools, community schools (K-12) and a range of schools for specific purposes. The NSWSPC operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Secretary of the NSW Department of Education (DoE). This Memorandum identifies the Council’s role as being “to enhance the effectiveness of NSW public school Principals through advocacy, support, professional learning and collegial networks, which in turn will lead to improved learning outcomes for students in NSW public education”. A STAR IN THE MAKING – DAISY PRING

Daisy, at Southern Stars 2018

Daisy Pring, Year 10, has certainly had a huge year in her pursuit of her passion of Singing. As a very committed Music student and Vocal Group Member, Daisy gives 100% effort at school while she is achieving milestones in many regional and state Performance opportunities. Daisy is a part of the

Illawarra Performing Ensemble as a Vocal soloist. This group has toured four times throughout the year, travelling to regional schools, often fitting up to three performances per day. She has also been a featured artist in this year’s presentation of Southern Stars. She performed with professionalism and style, she was involved in many segments with one of her favourite songs, “A little party”, and the Kiama Dance students performed in that item also. Daisy did not stop there, earlier in the year she auditioned for an amazing opportunity offered to public school students, the Talent Development Project. After many rounds of workshops and auditions Daisy was successful, and then her journey began, with many performance guided workshops with professionals from the music industry. Also she was instrumental in song writing and recording during this venture. Along with all of this, Daisy was also successful in auditioning for this year’s Schools Spectacular, where yet again she will be a featured artist. Over this year Daisy has dedicated many days, weekends and holidays to her performing.

KHS JAPANESE EXCURSION

During the Spring holidays, six staff and 16 students from the Year 10 Japanese elective class visited Japan. Despite the unusual situation of experiencing two typhoons, we visited three of the four main Japanese islands and many UNESCO World Heritage listed sites. The students represented Kiama High School with pride, and the staff selflessly volunteered their holiday time to ensure that our students gained a valuable and unique cultural experience. Everyone had an amazing time in Japan, and the students had the opportunity to use the Japanese that they have learned since Year 8.

SECONDARY STUDIES NEWS …

As part of our ongoing review of the KHS curriculum, Year 9 students are being offered, for the first time, the option of requesting a change to one of their Stage 5 electives for Year 10 study next year. Students are required to obtain a Request to Alter Stage 5 Elective form from the Secondary Studies Office in the Library and complete it, with their parent's signature to acknowledge and approve the requested change.

NB: Many of the Stage 5 Elective classes are full and it may not be possible to accommodate all students' requests for change. Every effort will be made to cater for student requests; however, it must be acknowledged that not all changes may be possible. Students have been advised of this when they have obtained the form. Also, the allocation of available spaces is decided on a number of factors: some students have made their own 'swaps', not realising that there may be other factors involved.

KHS FEST - FRIDAY 7 DECEMBER

KHS FEST planning is in full swing. The SRC have been working very hard organising stalls, food, entertainment, competitions and games for the day. Teachers are on board organising their activities. Fingers crossed we get good weather on the day. There is still an opportunity for students to volunteer some time to help out on some of the stalls. They are not expected to be there all day and will take shifts. Volunteers will receive a school service award and possibly more depending on sponsorship. Students wishing to volunteer need to see their SRC representatives or Mrs Littrich in E1. Students can also compete in 3x3 Soccer/Basketball/O Tag competition, form a team for Bubble Soccer or join the student soccer team for the Staff Vs Student game. They may also wish to perform on the stage or enter the Lip Sinc competition. We have had some wonderful sponsors come on board so far. They are Big River Building Kiama, Kiama Red Rooster, Zias, Kiama Leagues Club, Dear Willow, Siam Thai Massage, Kiama Toyworld, Teen Clinic, Haworth’s Music, Office Choice, Licked, The Bookshop, Sincerely Summer, Tella Balls and Zinc. Please let Mrs Littrich know if you are still able to sponsor a prize or donate towards the running of this day. Thank you for supporting this fun day.
