During Kai’s time in the program he overcame personal boundaries which allowed him to excel. He honestly and openly participated in activities. By doing this he set short, medium and long term goals and was able to further develop personal skills such as assertiveness and generosity. As his trainer, he was a pleasure to have in the group. Kai was always polite, on time, eager to participate and had a great attitude towards the program. Whether the activity be practical or theoretical, Kai gave 100% with his education to reach his full potential.” May I take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Easter and break for the long weekend. When we return next Tuesday there is only a short time until the term break so it is important to support students to get to school on time, complete all homework and tasks and wear their uniform with pride.

Term 1 Week 10A & 11B Commencing 2 April 2018

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

As the cooler months approach, I want to encourage all students to ensure they have the correct winter uniform in a size that fits and if purchases need to be made our uniform shop is open Tuesdays and Fridays. Please note that undershirts are not part of our uniform. Students are able to wear school tracksuit pants to school in terms 2 and 3 when it is cold but other track pants are not part of our uniform. They never have been and are not to be worn. A reminder that if you are purchasing school shoes for your child then please buy an ALL black shoe in line with our changeover commencing Term 3. This is especially important for students in Years 8-12. All students were reminded of this on Stage assemblies this week.

Well done to Kai Watkins of Year 11 for his nomination as

a finalist in the Inaugural Kiama Community College Inc Student of the Year award, which recognises students that demonstrate commitment and dedication to moving forward in their lives. Kai was nominated by one of the Links to Learning teachers who wrote the following about his commitment to the program and his senior studies. Kai is pictured receiving a finalist certificate from Michelle Hudson from Kiama Community College and with Ms Jaeger, Kiama High School’s Learning and Support Teacher who coordinates the links to Learning Program. “I would like to nominate Kai for the award as he fulfilled all expected outcomes of the links to learning program. He returned to full time school after the program with an improved attitude towards school and his education, which was noticed by the teachers of Kiama High School.

Whether the activity be practical or theoretical, Kai gave 100% with his education to reach his full potential.”

May I take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Easter and break for the long weekend. When we return next Tuesday there is only a short time until the term break so it is important to support students to get to school on time, complete all homework and tasks and wear their uniform with pride.

Congratulations also go to Lauren Perry as a finalist in

Zonta’s 2018 Young Women In Public Affairs. Thanks to Natalie Camino Year 12 Adviser for attending this fabulous event with Lauren. It is quite an honour to get to this stage. Finally I want to thank all students who participated in two fabulous events on Friday 16 March. We had nine students participate in The World’s Greatest Shave and exceeded our fundraising target and to date have raised over $7000.00 to fund further research into Leukaemia in young people. Thanks to the SRC for making this a whole school event including colouring hair, playing music and advertising this worthy cause. The second event was held down at One Fitness Gym. There was a 24 hour treadmill challenge and I put in my hour of running to demonstrate that there is no place for bullying in our society or our school. Students from across Year groups also participated in a forum to raise awareness of the impact of bullying. We also sold wristbands at school and all funds raised went to Headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation.

Best Start Year 7 Trial Test Best Start Year 7 is a literacy and numeracy assessment package for schools to use in the first five weeks of Year 7 from 2019. It is designed to assist teachers to identify students at risk of falling behind in literacy and numeracy and to more effectively target teaching for students. Year 7 students will participate in a trial of the Best Start Year 7 online assessment questions between 3 April and 13 April. The primary purpose of this trial is to test the reliability of the questions not to assess students. Accordingly, no individual student reports will be provided, however, the school will be provided with some preliminary information and links to syllabus outcomes and learning progressions. Students are required to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer to enable them to hear audio recordings of the numeracy questions. Earbuds for phone or a portable device are suitable. The students will be tested in roll call groups throughout the two weeks and in one of their English lessons. The school has expressed interest in taking part in this trial in order to have input into the Best Start Year 7 assessment package, which addresses one of the key elements of the department’s Literacy and Numeracy Strategy 2017-2020.

Aboriginal Immersion Day 2 Another great day was enjoyed by 54 Aboriginal students and their teachers this week. Students from Minnamurra PS, Kiama PS, Jamberoo PS, Gerringong PS and SS Peters and Pauls PS joined with our students to travel to The Bomaderry Children’s Homes before spending several hours with Uncle Laddie and Raymond Timbery at The Lady Denman Huskisson. The Danooch dancers performed several dancers and involved the students in the Crow, Kangaroo and Lyre Bird dance. Uncle Laddie showed us how to throw a Boomerang and Raymond taught us about special plants and cultural practices. After lunch, we travelled down to Booderee and learnt about Wreck Bay at the Information Centre before visiting the Botanical gardens. Several students were able to identify plants that they have been leaning about over the past 2 immersion days. Aboriginal Elders Trish Levett and Uncle Clarrie Hoskins accompanied us and continued to support the students as well as to share their knowledge.

Please contact the school should you need support in ensuring that your child is complying with the school uniform policy. Cash and Eftpos Only Please be considerate with closing times.

FAQS: KIAMA HIGH SCHOOL’S WAR ON WASTE

Why is Kiama High School doing the War on Waste Challenge?

Looking after our environment is a crucial issue - it is everybody’s responsibility. As Principal of Kiama High School, I want students and staff to have the knowledge of environmental issues that are affecting our local area and to be empowered to take action and make a difference. We live in a beautiful coastal environment and it’s important we look after it. FAST FACTS

● Between 2015-2016, Australia used 844,300 tonnes of plastic packaging - that’s equivalent to over 2,500 jumbo jets! Only 31% of it was recycled which leaves a lot

going to landfill.

● There’s estimated to be 300 million tonnes of plastic in the ocean. If we continue to consume plastic at our current rate, by 2050 there will be more plastic rubbish in

the ocean than fish.

● Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down - a single plastic water bottle is estimated to take 450 years to decompose!

● The Government estimates food waste costs the Australian economy $20 billion each year.

● 4 million tonnes of food ends up as landfill, enough to fill 8,400 Olympic sized swimming pools.

● One in five shopping bags end up in the bin = $3,800 worth of groceries per household each year.

● 35% of the average household bin is food waste

● Nearly three million people are living in poverty, one quarter are children.

● Over 644,000 people now receive food relief each month, one third are children.

The Kiama community already prioritises recycling and sustainability and we want KHS to follow the lead of the local council and adopt initiatives that will reduce the amount of waste we generate and promote diverting materials from landfill.

In addition to the environmental benefits, minimising the amount of waste we send to landfill will reduce KHS’s waste management costs meaning we have more money to spend on school resources

What will our War on Waste involve?

A number of exciting initiatives have been planned for the coming months. Initially we will conduct a waste audit on KHS to determine how much waste we generate in a week and how much could be recycled. From there, we will then implement a new bin system (which will include bins for paper/cardboard, plastic and organics recycling), we will also work to reduce the amount of food packaging in the canteen and we will start holding trash-free food days.

What is the new bin system?

To reduce the amount of materials we send to landfill, Kiama High School will now be implementing a new four-bin system. The blue bin will be for paper and cardboard recycling and will be found in classrooms. The green bin will be for organic recycling (e.g. food scraps). The yellow bin will be for recyclables (e.g. rigid plastic containers and bottles, alfoil, glass) and the landfill bin will be for all remaining items.

Cardboard/Paper Organics (food scraps) Recyclables Landfill

Our goal is to minimise the amount of materials we put into landfill as much as possible. In particular we want to minimise the amount of soft plastic packaging that we produce (e.g. muesli bar wrappers, chip packets etc).

Page 11: Kiama High School Newsletter · 2019. 10. 22. · Kiama High School Newsletter RESPECT · RESPONSIBILITY · EXCELLENCE Ph: 4232 1911 · e-mail: kiama-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au 1 Term

What is trash-free food?

A great way to reduce the amount of soft plastic packaging we use is to bring in trash-free lunches. Trash-free food or lunches are lunches that have minimal or no single-use plastic wrappers. Plastic food packaging is a major contributor to our landfill waste and many are difficult to recycle. Putting food into reusable zero waste containers is the most ideal option for a number of reasons - it reduces our waste stream and it also saves us money in the long-run. Other alternatives also include trying to use a compostable paper bag or alfoil (which can be recycled). Ultimately we want to avoid using plastic wrappers.
