KIDS 4 RAINFORESTS …because big change comes in little packages

Do you love animals?

Do you want to save the environment?

If you said YES, then you are the kind of person who can help protect the RAINFOREST!

What Can You Do? Ask your parents to buy products that do not contain palm oil.

Many plantations destroy rainforests for palm oil production.

Reduce energy consumption! Turn off the lights when you leave a

room. Walk and bike instead of using the family car. Sources of

energy like oil drilling are major threats to rainforests.

Raise funds through fun activities to support Rainforest Trust

projects that protect threatened rainforests forever.

Kids all over the nation have helped raise funds to save rainforest acres

and critical habitat for endangered species. Over the last 5 years, kids

just like you have raised over $10,000 for RAINFOREST TRUST!

Kids do make a difference! To support the Kids 4 Rainforest program,

you can plan an event to raise funds for RAINFOREST TRUST projects.

For every $100 raised, an acre of rainforest is saved forever!

The Blue-throated macaw is

critically endangered by the

illegal pet trade and a loss of

trees to build nests, but they

are protected at Barba Azul

Nature Reserve in Bolivia.

The Golden Poison Frog in

Colombia is the most

poisonous animal in the world

but is nearly extinct due to

deforestation and encroaching

farm land.

Jaguars live throughout Latin

America. They need healthy

environments to thrive.

Scientists know that the

jaguar’s presence indicates

healthy rainforests.

WHAT IS RAINFOREST TRUST?

RAINFOREST TRUST is a U.S. nonprofit organization

dedicated to saving rainforest land that is threatened

by deforestation, mining, oil drilling and other dangers.

We work directly with the most experienced

conservation groups around the world to identify

threatened areas. We move swiftly to purchase and

protect these disappearing treasures before they are

lost forever. We have low overhead costs with a small,

experienced staff so your donations go where they are

needed most—to save rainforests! We even have a

top rating from Charity Navigator because we are so

effective.

You can visit our website at www.RainforestTrust.org to learn more about us, where we

work and our projects around the world.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Here is a suggested checklist to prepare a fundraising event to support Rainforest Trust: 1. Choose your event (get permission from parents, teachers, and/or your principal) 2. Set a goal for how much you want to raise 3. Brainstorm what to do and how to get the word out 4. Pick a date for your event 5. Organize materials for the event (flyers, tables, tickets, food, posters, etc.) 6. E-mail RAINFOREST TRUST staff to let us know about your plan 7. Carry out your event and have fun! 8. Send in the funds you raise and receive a custom-made certificate 9. Start planning for next year

HOW DO I GET THE WORD OUT?

Create posters, flyers and pictures! If you need photos of a specific animal or project,

email us at [email protected]. We are happy to send you photos of endangered

animals and threatened rainforests in our projects.

Tell everyone about your Rainforest Trust fundraising event by posting it on Facebook,

Twitter and Instagram. You can write about it in a blog and tell your friends and family by

phone or e-mail.

ANYTHING ELSE?

If you need more information to help plan a fundraising

activity for RAINFOREST TRUST, e-mail us at

[email protected]. You can even schedule a

Skype chat with one of our staff members to find out

more about our projects.

Don’t forget to be “green” with your event. Use recycled

paper or reusable household items!

IDEAS FOR MY EVENT Here are a few ideas for fundraising events that other kids have done:

Bat or Bar Mitzvah project Make your Bat or Bar Mitzvah project a good deed for rainforests. Ask party guests

to donate at your event or directly to RAINFOREST TRUST. You could even hold a

fundraiser in honor of your Bat or Bar Mitzvah.

Birthday party donations (instead of gifts) Your birthday can be a charity event. Ask guests to bring donations instead of gifts.

Run for the Rainforest Organize a fun run. Hold the event at your school’s track. Have participants get

pledges for running or pay to participate in the run. Donors could pledge a flat

amount or give you an amount per lap.

Artwork auction Create rainforest-inspired artwork; then auction or sell it.

Bake sale Everyone loves baked goodies! With permission from your school and parents,

host a table to sell cupcakes, cookies or other items.

Jungle Market Collect new or used items and have a garage sale.

School Acres for Rainforest Acres Find out how many acres your school occupies and try to raise funds to purchase

that many rainforest acres. RAINFOREST TRUST can purchase 1 acre for $100.

HOW DO I MAKE A DONATION? After you raise funds for RAINFOREST TRUST, an adult can donate online with a credit

card using the “Donate Now” button on our website (www.RainforestTrust.org) or mail a

check (made payable to Rainforest Trust) to 25 Horner Street, Warrenton, VA 20186.

When you make a donation, be sure to e-mail us at [email protected] to tell us

about your fundraising event. We love to hear from you, your family and your friends!

If you have photos to share of your fundraising event, RAINFOREST TRUST features a

special section on our website for articles and photos of kids who have led projects to

save rainforest acres. Email your photos or stories to [email protected] so that

we can display how you’ve contributed to this great cause.

WHAT WILL I RECEIVE AFTER DONATING? RAINFOREST TRUST

will send you or your

whole class a custom,

signed certificate to

commemorate your

conservation gift and

acknowledge your great

effort to protect the

rainforest! The certificate

will show the number of

acres you helped to

protect and where they

are located. You can

proudly display your

certificate so everyone

can see what an

incredible difference you

made–saving rainforest

acres forever.

SUCCESS STORIES TO INSPIRE YOU

Check out these stories of events that other kids and schools hosted to save rainforest acres. Everyone can make a difference! “We at Portage Park School have become active participants in raising funds to purchase

and protect rainforest in South America since 2007. Not only have we continuously

educated our students in the importance of reuse, reduce, and recycle but we hope to

educate our students in the importance of protecting the beautiful land we still have today.

Portage Park School has helped purchase 39.5 acres and we hope to continue making

these donations to help make a difference not only to save the rainforest but all the

animals and creatures living within the land. Enclosed, please find a check for $1,000

towards the conservation of land for our most endangered species and critica l habitats.”

-Dieu, Student Council Coordinator, 6th Grade Teacher -Ewa, Earth Day Coodinator, 2nd Grade Teacher Portage Park Elementary School Chicago, IL “I was recently awarded a grant to do a large mural that included the entire fourth grade in

my school. The idea came from the book The Great Kapok Tree. The children read and

learned the message the story had to tell. ‘If you cut down the tree, where will the animals

live? If you cut down the tree, what will the animals eat? If you cut down the tree, the land

will become barren.’ They learned about cause and effect. I wanted my children not only to

read about the threat to the rainforest but to do something about it. I found your website on

the internet and thought it was a good way to have closure to the project by buying an

acre of land. Each of my students will give fifty cents to protect this fragile area of the

earth. In this small way, they will feel they have done something to save the earth.”

- Jacqueline, Elementary Art Teacher Saucon Valley School District Hellertown, PA “Hi, my name is Naomi and I raised money by doing a sponsored walk for your

organization for my Bat Mitzvah project. Please use this money to save acres of the

Amazon rainforest.” Naomi raised over $1,000! -Naomi, West Newton, MA

“Our summer-school rainforest-enrichment class raised $100 to purchase and save one acre of rainforest. Our students sold 100 cupcakes for $1 each to earn enough money. The students are anticipating the arrival of their official certificate that they can proudly display in their school as a reminder of their conservation efforts.” -Ben, Summer School Principal Clinton Elementary School Clinton, WI

“Enclosed is a check in the amount of $100. Please add it to the donation from the

kindergarten class from Good Shepherd Catholic School. Rather than taking an

extracurricular class, one of the classmates wanted to donate the money to your cause in

the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. As her teacher, I was very proud of her and excited that

the thoughts of philanthropy are being instilled!” -Charlie, Teacher Good Shepherd Catholic School Denver, CO

“Each year, our school promotes service projects for each grade level to raise money

towards a good cause to make our students aware that there is an entire world beyond

their own neighborhood. While learning about the rainforest, our kindergarteners became

very passionate about spreading awareness of deforestation. Observing this passion, the

kindergarten team decided to raise money to ‘save the rainforest.’ Our students made

posters, wrote papers, and appeared on the school news to plead their case. After three

weeks of collecting spare change from each classroom, we are proud to say that we

raised enough money to save three acres of rainforest. The students and staff are very

excited, and we look forward to raising money towards this cause again next year.” -Debbie, School Treasurer Coltrane-Webb Elementary School Concord, NC

Additionally, a youth club in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, is passionate about exotic animals and

saving the rainforest. The club, named Wild Over Wildlife! (WOW! for short), recently

held a Howl-o-ween Ball to raise money. These dedicated young people raised $520 to

save 8 acres of rainforest in Colombia! The Howl-o-ween Ball was a scary good time, as

children in Halloween costumes donated money toward their cause and had a chance to

pet and hold beautiful birds.
