Open Alternative School

Each year, The Santa Barbara Independent partners with one local elementary school to plan, prepare, and create our annual Kids’ Issue. These pages comprise our twenty-first annual Kids’ Issue, co-produced with the students of Open Alternative School. Over the past two months, Indy staff members have worked in the classroom with OAS students, providing a hands-on learning experience about the many facets of newspaper publishing.

OAS is a kindergarten through 8th grade public school located on La Colina Junior High School’s campus. The students in its after-school childcare program created the content for this special supplement by writing short articles on the theme of Time Travel, and designing ads featuring local businesses.

Thank you to the many Indy staffers who helped in the classroom and behind the scenes, and to the businesses that supported this issue. Thanks most of all to the OAS staff, students, and parents, who shared their incredible talent, enthusiasm, and creativity with us.

Special appreciation goes out to OAS childcare teacher Bob McDermott for championing this effort. Whether he is in the classroom, behind the microphone with his band Tequila Mockingbird, rooting for the Brawling Betties as their official number one fan, or strolling State Street with his lovely wife Rita, “Childcare Bob” exudes a trademark flair and energy that was evident in this project.

This year’s Kids’ Issue would not have been possible without Bob and his kids. We were privileged to work with them, and hope that you enjoy the final product.

What is Open Alternative School

and how is it special?

“Childcare Bob” says:

“Open Alternative School (OAS) was founded in 1975 to provide a child-centered holistic educational experience that nurtures the mind, body and spirit of each child. The OAS philosophy recognizes and supports each child as a unique individual while helping them develop a broad range of skills and attributes needed in a democratic society.

Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of activities designed to teach personal empowerment, community service and environmental or political activism. Feelings of hope, inspiration and empowerment are essential for creating a healthy and positive global outlook for today’s children.

OAS uses innovative programs and practices such as Core Group to focus on building a caring, inclusive community. Children learn tolerance, compassion, and respect while seeking diplomatic solutions to conflicts. Through open discourse, children are empowered to think creatively, ask questions, speak with integrity, look at issues from a variety of viewpoints, and support one another’s personal development.”

Future FashionIf could time travel to the future, I would invent a fashion machine. It is a little booth with an iPad were you can invent new styles or wear any out� t in existence. After you have selected or invented your out� t, you press a green button that is on the iPad and the top of the booth will come down around you. When it lifts up, you are wearing the out� t you selected or made. � e machine also can make hair pieces and jewelry. � at’s what I would do if I could time travel to the future.

I Can Fly!If I could time travel, I would go back in time and � y an old airplane. I haven’t been on an airplane before, but I like them. I would take all my friends. I want it to be rainy when I � y, and I want to � y with birds. I would want to go on a short plane ride so I can get there fast and we won’t run out of gas. I would just want to � y around. I want the plane to be blue.

Disney DreamingIf I could travel in time I would go back in time to when Walt Disney was still alive and when he � rst introduced Disneyland. I would also like to go on all the rides from back then and see how they are di� erent from now! I really want badly to meet Walt Disney because I would have met the creator of Disneyland and he was a

big owner. If I met him I would give him some good ideas

like putting more roller coasters in, and putting

in a place where you could see all of the cartoons that he made. I would want to interview him, meet his family and see where he grew up from a little baby

to the place where he lived before he died. � e

reason I wrote this story about Walt Disney is because

my family LOVES Disneyland and I admire everything he did!

Dinosaurs

A-PlentyIf I could time travel, I would go back in time to see the dinosaurs because I love them. My favorite dinosaurs are T-Rex, triceratops, and spinosaurus. � ey sni� really good. I would take them with me, and I want to bring all the dinosaurs back here, but not the hot lava because it’ll burn me. I’d bring them to every place, and then I’d bring them back where they were. I’d go by myself so I can explore. A pteranodon is a pterodactyl - those are cool dinosaurs because they � y like aaahhhhh, and I watch Dinosquad, and there’s a lot of dinosaurs. My other favorite is an apatosaurus.

Rocking in the

Past and the

FutureIf I could time travel I would go to the future. In the future I would go to Radio Shack on State Street. I would get the new radio robot they call Raido. Raido is a little radio with arms and legs.

He was so glad to get out of that store he tuned his dial to the song “Happy!” I took him back to the present and invited him inside. He fell in love with MY radio! He tuned his dial to “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles. I had to tell him she was a regular radio and he got really upset.

I asked him, “I wonder what it was like in the past?”. He tuned his dial to “Imagine” by John Lennon so I decided to go see the Beatles concert in the past. Raido wanted to go too, so I brought him along. Our favorite song was “Yellow Submarine.”

We went back to the present and lived together for many years. Raido was my companion and my new found friend.

It’s My BirthdayI would travel to September 18 because that’s my birthday. I like it when people come to my birthday party. I really, really like it because I always like it when I eat my favorite kind of cake. My favorite kind is chocolate. I would like to play with everyone because I’m inviting people. I really like birthdays because I’m going to invite Bob and some other people.

TablesIf I could get myself a time traveling machine, I would go back in time to when my Mom and Dad were babies

and I would volunteer to baby-sit them. Or maybe it would be better if they were kids my age. I would write in a journal what they were like as kids — all the good AND naughty things they did. I would tell them all about it when I saw them as adults again, and show them pictures I took of me and them together!

I’m Going to

DisneylandIf I could time travel, I would go to Disneyland because I like all the rides. I would go to the future because I like staying in the hotels and riding on the waterslide. I would take my grandma and grandpa and uncle. My favorite ride is the Lightning McQueen one. I would go to the toy store and get a Mickey Mouse hat. I would come back home after.

I Have A Dream ...

and MoreIf I could time travel, I would go back in time so I could meet Martin Luther King and see his I Have A Dream speech. I would also travel into the future to see what it’s like there. I would also go back in time again and see what Pearl Harbor was like before it was attacked. I would then go into the past to see what they dressed like in the ‘80s and get stu� that would go up in value in the future. I would also go back to meet Abraham Lincoln, and I would then go farther back in time to meet our � rst president George Washington, then even farther back in time to see what life was like before America was colonized.

We All Scream

for Ice CreamIf I could time travel, I’d go to the future to Ice Cream Land. I would eat ice cream the whole time. My favorite � avor is chocolate chip. I would eat it with shark candies and jelly beans. I would go by myself because then people wouldn’t tell me what to do. But I’d probably go with my friends.

My New PetIf I traveled back in time I would go to the dinosaur age and live there. When I was walking around one day there was suddenly a very loud noise: BANG!!! A gigantic, huge, cute object hit me right in the stomach; it was a stegosaurus. � e stegosaurus stared right down at me. I was so surprised I couldn’t even speak. I stood there for a second, a million thoughts swarming through my head. I mumbled and then managed one word... “Hi.” He nudged me and lifted me onto his back. I said, “Hey, you’re not so bad at all.” I paused for a second then said, “Do you want to be my pet?” He nodded his head in reply and I led him to my home. I sat on the � oor. He sat next to me and soon fell asleep, I scooted over a bit so he did not crush me in his sleep. It took a few moments for me to take everything in, but eventually I just closed my eyes and fell fast asleep.

France-y FutureIf I could time travel, I’d go to Paris in the future because there’s the Ei� el tower there. I would go to the top and eat lunch. I would eat a sandwich, spaghetti, and miso soup. I would go to the zoo. I would bring Zoe, Olivia, and Helena. I would see a gira� e, hippo, elephant, and a seal. � en I’d go to Legoland and build Legos and ride the roller coaster.

Grease

is the

WordIf I could time travel I would go back in time to the ‘50s to meet Sandy and Danny from Grease. � e reason that I would want to meet Sandy and Danny is so I could talk to them and act like them when I was there in the ‘50s. If I met Sandy and Danny I would ask them lots of questions. I would ask Sandy if she liked the sleepover with the snooty girls and I would ask Danny why he was such a jerk to Sandy in front of his friends.

iPhone geniusIf I could time travel back in time I would travel back to the 1970s to the 1980s, and I would play with my parents when they were kids. I would bring a TV from this age and an iPhone 6 so I could show the president and make him think I was a genius. Soon everyone from that age would have an iPhone. � en I would go back to the current time and live my life happily.

Catastrophic

CampingOnce upon a time, on a dark, stormy night, three kids and two adults went camping all together. � e three kids heard a noise saying, “Give me my toe.” And all three of the kids just said, “Go to sleep!” because they were really scared. And then it got closer. “Give me my toe!” � en they were all looking at each other scared with fear, and the noise got louder. “GIVE ME MY TOEEE!” And they all screamed like babies, and the noise went away. � eir parents came, and they said they heard a voice saying “give me my toe,” and they said, “You guys are silly. Go back to bed. If you get scared, only one can sleep with us.” And the voice came back louder. “GIVE ME MY TOE.” And it got louder and louder until it got in the tent. “GIVE ME MY TOEE!” � ey were all screaming like babies again. And one of them got up and went to go to bed with the mom and dad. And then the other two said, “Remember what mom said. � ere’s no such thing.” � en it got louder and opened the zipper and came in. And all the kids were scared, and then the voice got louder. Way louder. And then they found a toy in their hand, and they threw it, and it said, “Give me your soul!” And then it came up behind them and swallowed them whole. And then the mom and dad never came back to the camping site again, and only one of the kids was alive, and the two boys never doubted it again because they were still alive in the monster’s tummy. And then they time traveled to when the boy got older, and he had three children. � en the mom and dad went

back to the campsite, and two kids got swallowed again. � ey were

both boys, just like the last one. And only one kid and two adults

survived. � e end.

The Walk

Through TimeHi there, it’s Sasha and Izzy here to tell you a story about how we went to the future! It all started on a Friday after school. We went to the park and were walking down a path and saw a tree with a box next to it, so we decided to walk up to it, but as we saw the box we noticed that it was embedded into the ground. We could sense “this was no ordinary box!” As we hopped into the box, our vision started to blur and next thing we knew, we were in the future. It was pretty weird considering that just a few minutes ago we were in a box at a park under a tree! � ough it was pretty cool to see all the � ashing lights of the future and the Hello-Kitty holograms. We walked around and saw a candy shop, so we walked into it and saw so many candies, so we bought a lot of them! But after that it was way too much for us to handle, so we jumped back into the box and went home and ate some ice cream.

Disco Dino-

bulldozertopiaIf I could time travel, I would go to the dinosaur age, bring a bulldozer with me, get a dinosaur, make it half-dinosaur-half-bulldozer, and then bring it back to the present. � en I’d go into the parking lot of Starbucks and get some hot chocolate and a croissant. � en I’d get some rockets and attach them to the

bulldozer-dinosaur and then activate them and go � ying up to space. � en I’d land on Mars and then get a � ag, and I’ll say, “I will call this land Dinobulldozertopia with rockets on it.” And then I’d get a bunch of cows and make them fart rainbows so they’ll go � ying through space. And then I’d make a Subway and then make dinosaurs work there, and then I’d get a 5,000-foot-long. � en I’d get a bunch of dinosaurs and cows to eat it with me! And then I’d get an Oreo the size of an elephant and then make a building out of mint chip ice cream. And then I’m going to invite all the people from Earth there and then get a disco ball the size of a tree and then put a light inside of it and make it all cool colors and attach it to an outlet and then have a giant disco party. And then I’d have the Empire State Building made out of cake.

License to ShopIf I found a time machine, I would go to the future 7 years ahead and get my license to drive a black Audi. � en, I would drive to In-N-Out and get a cheeseburger with only cheese and ketchup, and get a vanilla milkshake. � en I would go to K-Mart and get a new pair of shoes, some new clothes, and some candy. If you are wondering why I’m buying so much stu� , it’s because I’m so excited I got my license.

I would go to the future and watch TV. I would watch channel 30, which is the Disney channel. And I would eat candy. � ere is a show coming up called Jessie and I really want to see it. Really, really bad!

for MomIf I found a time machine and I could go back in time, I would go ten years back and I would want to see my Mom’s tummy and I would know that I was the baby inside of her! I’d take a look around the hospital and I would � nd a place where there was milkshakes, candy and ice cream sandwiches! I’d tell my Mom that I was her baby, but now I’m nine and I can talk and walk. She would probably scream!

the FutureIf I could time travel, I’d probably go to the future and get a crazy new machine, a teleportation device. I’d get one for me and one to sell. I’d go into the past before I was born. I would steal some rich person’s money, because they don’t need that much. � en I would be rich. � ey couldn’t catch me because it was before I was born. � en I would go back into the future and buy a bunch of new boss video games and prank my future self.

of the BookIf I could time travel, I would go into the future. I would go into space. I would look for animals. I would look for zebras because they start with the letter Z. I like the letter Z because I like my name. I would take Kate with me and I would take my friend Kaya because they are my friends. If we found them there would be six zebras and we would ride them. It would be fun. We would bring our suitcases.

Going,

Going ...One day, there was a

man that went into a time traveler and he asked, “Can I

go to Mexico?” When he went to Mexico, he went on a stream.

He canoed to an island and he found a string. He followed it to a cave and went inside. He found a place to stay. When it was morning, he went outside and found the time traveler again. � en he asked if he could go to Hawaii. He climbed up a tree and found where he was, and went to Mexico and found his time traveler and said “Can I go home?” He went to those places because he had never seen them before and he always wanted to go, so he went to

those places. He asked to go home because he didn’t want to be late

for his lunch. After he went home, he went

in his room and went to sleep.

He woke up in the middle

of the night and found the time

traveler was in his

bed. So he thought about

where he wanted to go and he wanted to go to a school meeting but his mom didn’t want him to go in the middle of the night. She found him with the teleporter and wondered “hmmm what was that boy up to at night?” When he woke up, he went to school and he went in the garden and he saw the time machine. He went into the library and looked into the maze of the books he walked and walked and found the time machine. He told it that he wants to go to Disneyland. � en he wanted to go

see the concert. � en he saw a gym person who taught gym. When he was done with the gym he went to the forest to � nd jewels and pretty stones that he bought things with.

The Magic

Unicorn� ere once was a poor girl who had a time machine, who lived on a farm and had a horse named Wilsom, and she went to go ride over a mountain, and over the hills, and past a river, and into a dark cave, and to summon a pig, food and bed. � e next day she would sail into the river, and over a mountain and at the top she would climb the biggest rock, and go walk on the clouds, over the rainbow into the darkest cave, and get a unicorn named Frosting that could � y. So she would � y out of the cave, over the rainbow and out of the clouds, past the rocks and the mountain, in the river, over the hills and the mountain and back to her farm! � at unicorn made her the most awesome, famous rich person in the world. � e next

year, on the same day that she got the unicorn, she woke up and she looked for her unicorn, Frosting. “Frosting, Frosting!” she cried. She looked all over the world and at the last house, there was the most sad, poor girl and she got the unicorn, and then the girl realized that she was poor, and the unicorn made her AMAZING! So now the unicorn was not hers, and then a million years passed and the unicorn was still going around, and then world was more a happy place because of the girl and the unicorn!

Flying ShoesIf I could travel back in time, I would travel before they made shoes and create � ying shoes. I would do that so I can make a lot of money and I’d want to see everybody wearing my invention. I would � y to all of the places I want to visit, like Paris and Mexico and China. I think it’s cool to have � ying shoes because everybody wishes that they could � y.

Visiting Ancient

EgyptIf I could use a time machine, I would go back in time to Ancient Egypt! I would want to look around and see the Great Sphinx with his nose on. I would have some of the food there and see if it was any good. I would see all the animals: sheep, dogs, crocodiles and other stu� . I would like to see if I could get any of the jewels and gold and bring them back with me to the future. I would probably donate them to the museum!

A Titanic Tale� ere once lived a scientist/inventor in the mid-eighteen hundreds, whose name was Sam Wiess. Sam had two children by the names of Mark and Nancy. Mark was a very adventurous young boy, at the age of ten, while Nancy, at the age of twelve, was very timid, yet smart, and enjoyed helping her father with his inventions. Sam’s wife, Matilda, had passed away just a few years earlier from tuberculosis. Living on a widower’s salary, Sam and his kids lived in the slums of New York City. Sam’s son, Mark, was a news delivery boy for the New York Sun, earning 50 to 70 cents a week, while Sam’s daughter, Nancy, worked writing articles for Joseph Pulitzer’s paper, earning one to two dollars a week. Together, they were both able to make enough to support their family. Sam worked tirelessly day and night trying to invent something to get their family out of the dumps. � ey went on like that, day after day, living on dry bread and water until all that changed.

It was early morning in Sam’s workshop; it was always early morning when Sam started work. He liked the morning. It was silent and peaceful, and he could concentrate on his work at hand. While he worked on his newest project, Sam could hear Mark snoring one room away. Sam was much too poor to a� ord a watch, but he � gured it was about four to � ve in the morning. He would have to wake Mark soon, once it got light. He went back to working

on his newest project. He had been working on it for months. He called it his Transitional Inter-time Machine Engine or his T.I.M.E.

Putting on his rubber gloves, he reached into the wiring and made a few adjustments, then he pulled his hand out, took o� his gloves, and � icked a switch on the outside of the T.I.M.E. Suddenly, the machine began to hum and whir. Sam could hear the gears inside the machine spinning. � e red light on top of the machine turned green and the machine started to glow, then it started spinning. Sam didn’t know what to think! His machine was working; the buttons on the machine labeled “future” and “past” were blinking and without thinking, Sam reached forward and pressed the button labeled “future.” � e second that his � nger touched the button, a large � ash of white light covered him. It stayed there for one second, then instantly disappeared. When the light cleared Sam was standing on the deck of a large cruise ship. It had a large crack on the side of it and multiple chunks of ice on the deck next to where he was standing. People wearing life vests were running around everywhere, yelling at each other while others in uniforms were loading life boats and others were keeping people back from jumping into the life boats. Sam ran through the crowded deck trying to ask people what was going on, but everyone was too busy trying to get into a life boat. “Excuse me sir? Um mister, do you know what’s going on?” � en, woah! Sam slipped on the wet ground as someone bumped into him, tipping him o� balance. He grabbed on to the nearest rail as the boat tipped and the bottom half fell o� and into the water sinking until you could no longer see it. � e remaining life boats on the boat fell o� , some with people still in them screaming as they plunged to their deaths. Sam was still holding on to the rail for dear life as he felt the boat turned vertically, people screaming as they fell o� the ship, and plunging into the near freezing water. Sam held on to the

rail with one hand, still holding the T.I.M.E. in his other. As the ship sank lower and lower into the water, Sam looked at his machine one last time and saw that the little screen on it read “Titanic 1912”, whatever that meant. Sam didn’t want to stick around to � nd out. A second before hitting the water, Sam reached out and pressed the button labeled “BACK.” Instantly, the white light engulfed him. � ere was total silence, and then birds chirping outside his window and the sounds of New York City waking up in the morning. He was back in his workshop as if nothing had happened, and yet he had never felt more relieved in his entire life.

Back and Forth

for Fun and

GamesFirst, I’m going to go back in time and get a pterodactyl. � en I will get a meat on a stick, instantly by traveling into the future. I’ll travel into the future again and build an obstacle course where someone holds the meat on a stick, and they � ing it around for the pterodactyl to get. � at’s how they control it. Ice Cream

DreamsOnce upon a time there was a boy named Forest. He was a nice boy and always imagined about going to the future. One day he found a

police box. He went into it and it suddenly became bigger. He turned a wheel and it started making a

weird noise. When the noise stopped, he opened the door

of the police box and he saw � ying cars. He thought,

“Am I in the future?” He saw

clear tubes with people shooting through them for transportation. He saw robots drinking oil. He � rst went to an ice cream shop and the � avors were totally di� erent than his favorites, Rocky Road and Vanilla. � e � avors were Peanut Butter and Sour Patch Kids. He didn’t want to buy ice cream because of these new types of � avors, so he went to a di� erent shop. � is shop wasn’t as weird. It had the old-fashioned � avors that he was used to, so he bought a scoop of Rocky Road. He stayed in the future and his life went on.

Medieval TimesIf I could travel in time I would go back in time to the medieval times. I would want to do that because I could go into a castle with princesses and kings and queens. I could go talk to a wizard and � ght dragons. I could go to the forest and just go on an adventure. It would be cool to travel back in time and go to villages and see the di� erences in time from then and now. I could even meet people who are related to me. � at’s why I would want to go back in time and visit the medieval times.

Flying CarsIf I was able to use a time machine I would go into the future to a time when they have � ying cars. I’d get one and bring it back in time with me. I would go to the car companies and give them the car so they could copy it. � en we all would have cars that could � y and I would be a billionaire!

Wasn’t It?Once upon a time in 2015 — this is NOT a fairy-tale — there was a girl named Hayden. One day she was walking in an alley near State Street then she found some type of a machine. It looked very cool to her so she picked it up and walked home. Her mother said “What’s that? Get it out of my house! It looks like you’ll kill one of the cats with that.” Hayden went outside and put it in the garage. She started trying to � gure out what it does. Once she found the button that turned it on, she put a button from her dad’s junky garage. She pressed a green button and it made the button disappear. � e next day she told her friend Ava all about the machine. � ey decided to test it out themselves. � ey disappeared before you could say bye. � ey were at school on the � rst day of last year; the year was 2013. Hayden was wearing what she wore on the � rst day and Ava was, too. � e bell rang. Hayden sat near the boys.

Worst mistake! So she sat near the girls. All she wanted to do was change her mistakes while she was there, but she felt like it would change their lives. Hayden changed everything that she regretted, but the last thing she did almost ended her friendship. But after Ava told Hayden she hated her, Hayden woke up. It was all just a dream.

Civil WarIf I were to use a time machine, I would go back in time and experience the Civil War. I would want to meet all of the soldiers and hang out with them. � en I would help them heal. If I could bring something back, I would probably bring back a musket (those old, really bad guns.) I’d take one that they used in the actual war and sell it for a big pro� t. � en I would become rich!

AfterOnce upon a time, there lived a man who loved this girl named Kylie. Kylie was shy, but she loved that man, and she never wanted to give up, but she was too shy to ask the man. And then one day, the man said, “I wish I could ask that lady out, but I can’t.” � en the man stomped his foot and said, “I’m done with all this stu� . I just want to go over there and ask that lady right now!” And then he went over to that house and said, “will you please go on a date with me?”

And he gave � owers to that lady. She said, “Sure, but if we go on a date, can we pick where there are not a lot of people? And he said, “Sure. You can pick whatever place you want.” And then they went out to the beach, and they ate dinner there. � en four months later, they got engaged and then married, and then they had two kids: two girls named Bella and Pepper.
