Nathan’s Notes
Angie’s List “Life is better Connected.”
I was doing some reading this past week and ran across
an article that I found quite interesting. It was one of
those 10 ways to do this or 5 ways to do that article. I
am not a fan of formulaic solutions to anything, I think
there are too many variables to make solutions formu-
laic. There was one point in this article that did catch
my eye, and it has stuck with me all week. The point
that was elaborated on is this: Everything is Outreach.
That point is incredibly true. Everything that we do as
a church is geared to reaching into the community in
hopes of making a connection with them.
This is an extremely important thing for us to grasp. If
we really grab this idea and hold on to it everything
about our church will be transformed. We will be and
become a welcoming and inviting body. Welcoming any-
one who comes into our doors, and be intentional about
inviting our friends and neighbors to be a part of the
things that we are doing.
Personal invitations are the best way to encourage peo-
ple to be a part of the things that are going on at FBC. I
want to challenge you this year to be intentional with
your friends and neighbors and invite them to things
that we have going on at the church. You may hear no
many times, but I promise, if you keep asking and keep
working you will eventually hear yes. Isn’t it worth
hearing no twenty times to hear yes once, and it may be
that one yes that leads someone to a saving knowledge
of Jesus.
This year there are going to be many opportunities to
invite people to engage in things that are church, but
not traditional Sunday morning church. These are the
specific things to invite your skeptical friends and
neighbors to. We are starting off the year February 15
with Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace. If you have read
Bro. Ray’s article we are going to be having Keith Tom-
linson back in April. This summer we are going to have
a Marriage Enrichment Weekend. This fall we are go-
ing to have a Parenting Workshop. Things are going on
here that we can invite people to, and welcome them as
they come. These events give an opportunity for people
to engage the church in a different way.
The most important thing we can do is invite people to
be a part of what God is doing here in our midst. I chal-
lenge and encourage us to get to work inviting people
that we know to join us here.
Blessings,
Nathan
5 NEW CHRISTIANS
5 new Christians and their families learned the
meaning of the Lord’s Supper during our lunch and
training last week. Prayer partners and small group
leaders circled together as church and family to lead
our new Christians. February 7th they’ll take the
Lord’s Supper together in the sanctuary.
KIDS LEARNING TO GIVE THROUGH MISSIONS
Every Sunday we have a weekly penny offering in
Chapel! Kids are discovering the meaning of offer-
ings, tithes & missions. These offerings go to mis-
sions that our church supports – each month we focus
on specific missions and how we’re all missionaries in
our own community.
DEVELOPING SMALL GROUP LEADERS & EN-
GAGING PARENTS
We’re engaging families and developing leaders
through Weekly. Weekly is an online subscription
that gives a weekly checklist for doing ministry bet-
ter. It has a plan for personal development, training
leaders, and social media as well as a weekly email
for groups and parents with a guide to what kids are
discovering weekly.
FAITH, FOOD, AND FITNESS
The Ladies Fit Group made a connection in our com-
munity with Studio 85 and heard a presentation on
living a healthier lifestyle. We’re committing to mak-
ing good habits through faith and friendships so we
can be successful. The Ladies Fit Group meets on the
Seawall at 5:30 every Tuesday.
LEADING STRATEGICALLY
If we want to reach the next generation, we have to
be committed to personal development. A fourth
grader today was born when the I-phone came out.
Sometimes, we have to suspend our thinking in or-
der to reach the next generation. That’s why 5 lead-
ers are going to the Orange Conference in Atlanta
from April 26th-29th. Our small group leaders are
committed to learning the phases that kids and fam-
ilies are in so we can leverage those opportunities to
impact their future.
In order to inspire an authentic faith, you must first
practice and prioritize it in your own life,
Angie
SPRING RENEWAL
As I write this it is hard to think Spring is not al-
ready here. It is sunny and 65 degrees outside.
However, we still have a few weeks left before we
can declare "Spring has sprung" on Galveston Is-
land. Several have asked me if we were going to
have a time of renewal this year as we did last
year. It is my pleasure to announce that our
preacher from last year, Keith Tomlinson, has
agreed to come and lead us in a time of revival/
renewal on the weekend of April 22-24 . Please
begin to pray for Bro. Keith as he begins his prepa-
ration to be with us. I believe the Lord is going to
do some great things during this weekend.
THERE IS A LOT GOING ON!
As you observe February's calendar, you will find
there are many opportunities to serve and to learn.
On Sunday afternoon, February 7, we will be host-
ing our 15th Annual Souper Bowl for Galveston's
homeless and underserved. I know Greg Samford
could really use several more volunteers if you are
available.
The Galveston Citizens Police Academy began
meeting on the last Monday of January and will
continue through April 11. On Monday, February
15, Larry and Carmen Gore will be leading the
Dave Ramsey Financial Study. It will also finish
on April 11. You will find more information on this
elsewhere in The Herald , and these opportunities
are worth your time. I encourage you to consider
getting involved.
The Pastor Search Committee is hard at work put-
ting together a profile of who we are as a church
and a profile of the qualifications for our future
pastor. Please be praying for thecommittee as they
spend many hours in prayer and discussion as they
continue their search. I could name others, but
you can see we have a lot going on for the glory of
the Lord.
Please continue to pray for me as I pray for you.
I Love You,
Bro Ray
