KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
The case for change:Kids experiencing disadvantage need camps…4 critical points:
• Allegedly 10,000 children disappear from Vic education system annually
• Parental education/parental occupation/cultural factors are more predictive of educational achievement than financial resources
• Outdoor programs facilitate positive teacher-student interactions, which are the most important factor in effective teaching
• A Doxa camp is an intervention within the context of a school year
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Against the odds:90%+ of service delivery change programs fail to deliver benefits
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Did you know?
• Opportunities to change abound – picking a winner isn’t easy – especially when we are confident in our organisation’s efficacy
• To build the great outdoors programs for kids, we need approaches which support us to generate and implement local innovations
• Co-Design is an approach which unlocks an organisation’s ability to leap forward
• Doxa chose to ‘escape’ its facility hire model and utilised Co-Design to build its future Camps programs
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Our camps support students through a focus on delivering:1. Positive life experience2. Improved engagement
upon return to the classroom• Increased resilience
and perceived self-worth
• Improved relational health
Prins, APs, Parents & Kids:Everyone has a view on what needs to be achieved!

KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Strategy 1:Strategic Planning• Strategic Planning is
required to identify Strategic Goals and Initiatives is critical to the sustained change effort
• External expertise to critically evaluate program coherence and develop the forward strategic pathway
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Learnings• Revise Vision, Mission and
Values to retain relevance• Keep the strategic goals
broad• Reduce the number of
strategic initiatives (50 to 7)• Assess opportunities based
on capability vs external impact in the first instance
Strategy 1:Strategic Planning
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Strategy 2:Staff Engagement• Capital investments
to expand the staff ‘activities toolbox’
• Reducing ‘rules’ outside of explicit risk mitigation
• Dedicated focus on fun and reshaping the ‘classroom on the road’
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Learnings• Our staff are all about kids• 62% of employee effort is discretionary• Cultural limitations re accommodating
failure• High values alignment increased resistance• Restrictive historical workplace
arrangements• Learning how to engage, be flexible and
forgive
Strategy 2:Staff Engagement
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Strategy 3:Research & Metrics• Seek to generate valid
explanations for how and why your interventions work
• Research must be specific to your program to be valid
• Account for multiple controlled and uncontrolled variables
• Let the data drive program change decision making
KIDS OUTDOORS 2030
Learnings• The research was not coherent
but did drive critical analysis• 20+ day programs are
effective, but what of 3 day programs…
• Concepts which appeared to have validity were often poorly supported
• Do not discount the value of qualitative and anecdotal data
