FOOD SERVICE…
Pearland ISD offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast costs $1.45 & lunch costs $2.50. You may monitor your
child’s account online at www.schoolcafe.com. Just log-on and register your child using their 6 digit ID number. Use
the “contact us” feature to email the Food Service Office it you do not know your child’s ID number. We will be happy
to send it to you.
If you find that your child is over-spending and you want us to set restrictions on their account, log on to
www.schoolcafe.com.
Your child may qualify for free or significantly reduced priced meals. Applications are available on the district
website. Families must re-apply for this program every year. Please note that you will need to cover the cost of your
child’s meal until your application is approved.
Things to REMEMBER:
24 Hour Processing: Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours to process a payment and have it reflect in your child’s
balance. Don’t panic if you can not see it right away. The funds will be available by the next day.
Auto E-mail Alerts: This feature sends an e-mail alert when your child’s account falls below a preset limit. It is our
recommendation to set the minimum at $10. Please make sure your date limits are not expired from the previous year.
Student Account Restrictions:
• Purchasing restrictions can be made using www.schoolcafe.com
• The following are the options for placing restrictions on your child’s account:
o Do not allow my student to use CASH for a la carte purchases on these selected days
o Do not allow my student to DEBIT their account for a la carte purchases on these selected days
o Set a maximum number of a la carte purchases allowed per day
Food Service Charging Policy
Charge Policy: To avoid overtly identifying students who have a zero or negative meal account balance, the following
policy has been implemented. Once a student meal account reaches zero ($0.00), the Food Service Department will
allow students to purchase a “Meal Only” (no ala carte purchases) for 10 school days. This allows time for the student
to notify their parent that the account needs money. When the account balance exceeds -$6.00, an email will be sent
to the parent email registered in Skyward. This email will provide information on how to apply free or reduced meals
and how to contact the Food Service Department to set up a payment plan if necessary. The Food Service Department
will email parents three times, and then parents will receive a phone call. If the account remains insufficient 5 days
after the phone call, the students account will be blocked from any further charging. The student will be offered a
courtesy meal consisting of a Peanut Butter/Jelly sandwich or Cheese sandwich, choice of vegetables and fruits and a
choice of milk at no cost. Balance reminder letters are sent home with elementary and middle school students weekly.
Junior high and high school students are notified verbally at the cash register as their balance approaches zero and
balance reminders are mailed every two weeks. All negative balances must be paid by the end of the school year or will
be transferred to the district fee collection system.

are ineligible for perfect attendance?
Did you know that in the car rider line you must have a current year placard displayed in your car to pick
up a student at dismissal?
Did you know that parents who choose cafeteria walk up for dismissal must enter and leave through the
back cafeteria door and remain in the cafeteria until their child enters?
Did you know that if your child has a fever they must stay home until fever free for 24 hours without the
aid of medication?
Did you know that parents cannot drop off in the bus circle until all busses leave?

even if you are “in the system”?

building?

Did you know details for all these things and so much more can be found in the Shadycrest Student
Handbook.
What will PBIS look like?
At Shadycrest our staff has been trained in the PBIS model. PBIS utilizes a positive approach
to behavior and provides students with feedback in their areas of need. The idea is to
treat behavior just as we would any other subject that is being taught with our focus being
on the positive. In a typical classroom you will see teachers greeting students as they walk
into their classroom and praising students throughout the day for following our 3 school
rules of being SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, and RESPECTFUL. When a child exhibits an undesira-
ble behavior the teacher will use this time to correct and teach the appropriate behavior
providing feedback along the way so the child knows they are on the right track.
How will I know how my child is behaving at school?
Each teacher will have their own class Brag Board. Each time a student is acknowledged for
being SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, or RESPECTFUL they will put their initials on the Brag Board.
The idea is that the whole class is working together to earn a reward. Once the class reach-
es their goal, the process will start all over again. There will be times when a consequence
for a behavior is necessary, teachers will utilize conduct folders to relay that information to
parents. In the event a behavior is severe or reoccurring you will be contacted via phone
or email by your child's teacher.
Below are our School Wide Expectations (Our School Rules)
One of the foremost advances in
school wide discipline is the
emphasis on school wide systems
of support that include proactive
strategies for defining, teaching,
and supporting appropriate
student behaviors to create
positive school environments.
Instead of using a piecemeal
approach of individual behavioral
management plans, a continuum
of positive behavior support for
all students within a school is
implemented in areas including
the classroom and non-classroom
settings (such as hallways, buses,
and restrooms). Positive behavior
support is an application of a
behaviorally-based systems
approach to enhance the capacity
of schools, families, and
communities to design effective
environments that improve the
link between research-validated
practices and the environments in
which teaching and learning
occurs.

PBIS GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS
#1 Use positive wording
Instead of “Don’t run in the store,” try “You must walk in the
store.”
Instead of “Stop yelling,” try “Use your inside voice.”
Instead of “No throwing the ball in the house,” try “You can only
throw the ball outside.”
#2 Be a teacher
When you have to say NO, give a reason why. For example, while
shopping, your child asks you to buy him a toy. You know how many
toys he already has, and you are short on time. You tell your child,
“No, we can’t buy that toy today because you already have a toy in
the car that you can play with on the way home.” If your child
accepts your answer, compliment him, saying something like “Thank
you for being respectful and understanding that we can’t buy a new
toy today.”
#3 Acknowledge appropriate
behavior
Use positive reinforcement to teach your children which actions/
behaviors are expected, accepted, or desired. Figure out what
kinds of acknowledgements your child will be motivated by. Ask
them what they would enjoy doing (not necessarily having)! Create a
special “reward” basket or box of toys or items that you already
own but that your child only gets to play with or use when they
have done what was expected. Create a visual recognition system,
such as a sticker chart. For example, list your child’s weekly
chores and use a sticker to mark when each one is completed. At
the end of the week, if all chores are completed according to
expectation, give a reward.
Reach for
the Stars!
Benefits of School-wide PBIS Admittedly, PBIS can feel foreign to those familiar with traditional punitive discipline systems. But adopting a PBIS framework school-wide can have incredible benefits:
Improves school culture
Builds social skills
Reduces office discipline referrals
Reduces suspensions
Increases instructional time
Improves social and emotional development
Improves school safety
Increases student engagement
Improves academic performance
Increases family involvement
Improves faculty retention
Improves classroom management
PBIS is not…
A packaged curriculum
Abandonment of discipline
Bribery for good behavior
Ignoring inappropriate behavior
A quick fix
Just for one type of school
