D o you have a pet you love? Can youimagine your pet saving your life orchanging history through science?Throughout time, many animals have

contributed exciting things to the world.

Animals in space

Animals have been traveling to space sincebefore humans. In 1947, fruit flies were sent ona rocket 67 miles into the air (one mile past thepoint where NASA considers space to begin).Those fruit flies returned safely to Earth,which helped scientists decide that itcould be safe for humans to travel tospace, too.

Many other animals have since traveledto space, including dogs, cats, fish, tortoisesand monkeys.

Brave animals

Animals have been used as humans’ helperssince the beginning of time. Cher Ami the hom-ing pigeon once saved 200 people during WorldWar I. Homing pigeons were used in that timeto take messages to faraway troops. In 1918,during an important battle, soldiers were acci-dentally shooting at their own troops, and CherAmi carried a message telling them to stop. Hewas hurt badly but succeeded in his mission.

In 2008, Moko the dolphin saved two whalesthat had been beached in New Zealand. Humanshad been trying to get them back out to sea,but Moko was able to communicate with themand get them back out to deeper water, wherethey’d be safe.

Smart animals

You’ve prob-ably heard ofPunxsutawneyPhil, the famousgroundhog whopredicts theweather. Everyyear since 1886,he’s come out toGobbler’s Knob in Punx-sutawney, Pennsylvania, andwhispered to one of his caretakersabout whether he has seen a shadow. Not see-ing a shadow means an early spring. The group

that takes care of him insists that the sameanimal has been predicting the weather all thistime, but since groundhogs only live about 10years, that’s probably just a fun legend.

Back in 1591, there was another smart animal,Marocco the dancing horse. He could countcoins by stamping his hoof and even bow tothe queen. Eventually, he and his owner wereaccused of witchcraft, but they both came outof it OK after the horse bowed in front of thejudge.
