In the beginning of a new academic session in KilT University,

it is necessary to look back to assess our success and failure

in making the University one of the great centers of learning.

With nearly cent percent placement in almost all streams

despite the gloomy employment scenario, KilT ignites hope in

every young mind. This hope is perhaps responsible for the

overwhelming response in KIITEE. In a process the KilT

University will be constrained to take few hundred only in

various courses and with the great teaching and learning in

the campus they will be successful to compete with the best

in the world. KilT University does many more things than

teaching. It inculcates values in the students. As a result of

which KilT always remains at the forefront of various social

activities. The recent visit of the Union Health Minister, Shri

Ghulam Nabi Azad along with Shri Jagdish Tytler to a function

organized by Gandhi Global Family, which incidentally has Dr.

A. Samanta as its National Secretary, is a case in point. Shri

Azad was overwhelmed by finding the magnitude of work

done by KilT & KISS under the leadership of Dr. Samanta.

Being a multi-dimensional University, KilT organized the 150'h

Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore which

was attended by Padma Vibhusan Mahasweta Devi and

alumnus of Tagore's Santiniketan and Dr. Narendra Jadhav,

Member, Planning Commission of India and National Advisory

Council, who has written several books on Tagore. Perhaps

the most heartening thing that happened was the recognition

accorded to the selfless service of the Founder Dr. Sa manta. A

human development magazine 'Education World', while

lauded the efforts of KilT and its Founder, the Govt. of Delhi

through a Cabinet decision decided to replicate KISS in the

capital city. Another wing of KilT, KiiT International School

came out with a National Children's Magazine- Kloud9. Many

other things happened in the campus with each one bringing

glory to this great institution. With a strong foundation, the

future of any institution looks brighter. With so much of

activities taking place in KilT, the future of this institution

looks bright enough.

Fi rst of a l l , I want to congratulate Dr. Samanta . I travel a lot with i n the country as wel l as outside the country. I have seen very big i nstitutions - re lat ing to both ed ucation and hea lth - in which thousa nds of chi ldren get their ed ucation . But most of those or a lmost al l of those i nstitutions a re either promoted by rich ind ividua ls or belong to societies i n which 50 to l 00 rich ind ividua ls a re members.

But, perhaps, in the whole world KilT is the first university that I have come across which is not promoted by a rich individual. Its Founder, Dr. Samanta runs this huge organisation from a chair and table under a tree. Even if

requirement of money. It only requires courage and sacrifice. This person is not a 80 or 90 year old man, who has no desire to get married, have ch i ldren, travel to places, eat d ifferent food . In this age and i n the age when he esta b l ished this institut ion, one wants expensive cars, wife, ch i ldren, big house, big factory, etc.

If he had used his intelligence and will power for himself, he would have been successful in creating wealth for himself to the tune of 50,000 crore, like the big industrialists we see in Mumbai. Those industrialists also have love and respect from

Those who have visited and will visit this institution cannot escape thinking that there is a dearth of persons like him. Period before independence was the time of Gandhiji, Nehruji, Maulana Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose and others. They had great love for the country and they sacrificed everything for it. Independence could be achieved only due to their sacrifice.

I wi l l now speak a few l i nes on behalf of Min istry of Hea lth &

Fami ly Welfare. The Ministry is implementi ng National Rura l Hea lth Miss ion . The project i s for hea lth o f people l iv ing i n

v i l lages. I n our country, many babies d ie at the t ime of birth .

Many more ch i ldren, those be longing to poor fam i l ies who do not get requ i red n utrition,

In our country there are about 13 vitam ins and proteins,

a re ma lnourished . Similarly, 65 years after i n d e p e n d e n c e D r . Samanta has sacrificed everything for the society. After independence which led to democracy, sacrific ing attitude for the country has been on a decl ine . It is nea rly nonexistent these days. Today everyone is

after money, whether one is in pol itics, Government job or any other activity. The wi l l i ngness to serve the society and poor is a lmost absent.

Therefore, the work that Dr. Samanta has done is commendable. This is my hope that 16,500 tribals who are studying in Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) will go ahead to become like Samantas and they will carry forward this ideal. There are about 9 crore tribals in our country deprived of basic facilities even after 65 years of independence. They don't have access to school, hospital, medicine or road. Dr. Samanta has chosen poorest of the poor among them for service. This was also the message of Gandhiji. He said India lives in its villages. If you work for development of villages, you work for development of the country.

Dr. Samanta works for the development of villages -

choosing the most backward population in it, those

who do not have two square meals to eat and proper

clothes to wear. No one can be more true Gandhivadi

than him.

We observe two functions to commemorate Gandhi j i - his b irth

anniversary on 2nd October and his death ann iversary on 30th

January. On previous occasion, these two functions were held i n

Guwahati a nd Hyderabad. I have requested Dr. Samanta to

organ ise this year's functions of 2nd October i n KISS. On that

day we wi l l ta lk on deta i l about Gandhi j i and I w i l l tell you what

you can do to take forward his message.

these children, our Ministry will provide iron tablets and folic acid tablets free of cost. These tablets will be provided through schools to all boys and girls all over the country. These tablets will help improve nutritional status of children. For girls who do not attend school, these tablets would be provided through Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA).

I once again thank Dr. Sa manta to g ive me an opportu n ity to visit

this g reat institution .

Ingenious Tribal Children Development Model First-time visitors to Odisha a re l i kely to be pleasantly su rprised by the smooth double carriageways and neat bunga lows of its green administrative capita l Bhubaneswar. Unhera lded and unsung, the city has developed a n impressive civic i nfrastructure, and latterly, has emerged as eastern Ind ia 's new academic centre . The officia l sea l on the emergence of Bhubaneswar as a new hub of h igher education was conferred on this charming city when it was selected by the 22 ,000-strong Kol kata -based I nd ian Science Congress Association to host its 99'h Ind ian Science Cong ress ( ISC) between Janua ry 3-7 . The ISC was i naugurated by Prime Min ister Dr. Manmohan S ingh and attracted the world's top scientists and 1 8,000 delegates. The organ izationa l ly successfui iSC served the usefu l purpose of showcasing the admin i strative capabi l ities and notable academic progress and development of K i lT U niversity - in itia l ly promoted as the Ka l inga I n stitute of I ndustria l Technology in 1 992-93, and g ra nted deemed u n iversity status by the UGC in 2004 . One of the country's you ngest private u n iversities, with in less tha n two decades it has promoted 23 aesthetica l l y a rchitecture and landscaped schools of profess ional education del ivering g loba l ly benchma rked u nder graduate and postgrad education .

"Having experienced acute poverty and deprivation i n my ch i ldhood and youth from which I was ab le to extricate myself through the power of education, it's my l ife's m ission and purpose to eradicate the deep poverty and ignorance which is the natu ra l cond ition o f ch i ldren and youth, especia l ly among the triba l commun ities o f Odisha and eastern India. Starti ng with capita l of on ly Rs . 5 ,000 and 1 2 students in 1 992, and with the blessings of God and persistent effort, I have been able to bui ld two g reat education institutions - K i lT University and the Ka l i nga I n stitute of Social Sciences (KISS) . The latter provides whol ly res identia l k indergarten to col leg iate education to 1 5,000 chi ldren d rawn from Odisha's most backward tribal popu lation, whose socioeconomic condition is much worse than of the schedu led castes and tribes entitled to special affi rmative action i n the Constitution of I ndia . I bel ieve over the past two decades, we have been able to des ign a sound i nter-connected education development model which will enable us to sca le up our operations to make mean ingful contributions towards poverty erad ication through education on a mass sca le," says Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the vis ionary Founder of Ki lT U niversity and K ISS, and among the most admi red and respected citizens of Odisha .

Management of KISS - reported ly the world's largest board ing school - providing K-XI I and u ndergraduate education to 1 5,000, ma in ly first generation students speaking 30 tribal lang uages for whom even Oriya is unfami l ia r, is a gargantuan task. With a bu i lt up area of 600,000 sq . ft. KISS is equipped with a 50 kw solar power plant, an RO water fi ltration p lant which suppl ies 1 00,000 l itres of potable water da i ly, and a ful ly mechanized kitchen which serves 45,000 mea ls per day i n a d in ing hal l with a seating capacity of 1 0,000. I t has 1 5,000 students resid i ng i n 1 0 dormitories equ ipped with 1 1 ,000 two-tier and th ree-tier beds, and uti l iz ing 800 shower-bathrooms and 800 toi l ets, amenities whol ly u nfami l i a r to triba l ch i ldren . The academic i nfrastructure incl udes 1 05 classrooms (operati ng in two shifts), two computer labs to seat 600 students, a 1 5 ,000 sq. ft l ibrary equ ipped with 1 50,000 books and e- jou rnal subscriptions, a wi-fi system-enabled campus and close circuit te levision camera system for ch i ldren 's safety and security. Dr. Samanta 's empathy with the cruel ly neg lected and persecuted (by t imber and mining mafias and compl icit government officia ls) tr ibal popu lation of Odisha is ind icated by the strong focus and considerab le i nvestment in developing co-curricu lar (dance, m usic, d rama, yoga) and extracurricu lar games and sports faci l ities on the KISS campus. The sprawl ing campus boasts five large g rounds for f ie ld games such as hockey, footba l l , rugby, vol leyba l l , softba l l ; ind igenous games such as kho-kho and kabbad i ; ath letics tracks and an a rchery range - games and sports in which tribal sportspersons trad itiona l ly excel .

Although it's rare to encounter ta l l ch i ld ren or youth i n KISS (the consequence of chi ld ma lnutrition which is commonplace i n the triba l a reas of the state) , KISS students have done the institute proud. Among their more noteworthy achievements: the school 's team won the I nternational Under - 1 3 Rugby Championsh ip held in London in June 20 1 1 ; the K- 1 0 school team was the fina l ist i n the Schools Nationa l Footba l l Tournament held i n Jammu i n September 20 1 1 ; several g i rl students have donned India rugby colours; and others have represented the state and nat io n a l tea m s in kho - kho , kabba d i we ight l i ft i n g , hockey a n d a rc h e ry.The extraord inary success o f KISS i n providing hol istic K-postgrad education to chi ldren of I nd ia's exploited hunter-gatherer aborig ina l popu lation has not gone unnoticed. Severa l Un ited Nations agencies, fore ign un iversities and corporate have also been sufficiently moved to lend aid a nd advice to the institute's management.

This social need and imperative has p ro m pted S a m a nta a n d h i s top management team to draw up p lans to promote 20 new KISS schools i n eastern I ndia .
