Having established IRMA in AnandI also wished for long that the secondSchool of Rural Managementshould come up in Odisha.

I am happy that the initiative of shapingKIIT School of Rural Management has come froma person like Dr. Samanta, an institution builder

Now with setting up of KIIT School ofRural Management, my wish is fulfilled……

of repute in the field of education.

20th November 2006KSRM Foundation Laying Ceremony, Bhubaneswar

Dr Achyuta Samanta made a beginning bysetting up Kalinga Institute of IndustrialTechnology (KIIT) way back in 1992 whichhas now grown substantially to be one ofthe finest Universities in the country. Hisconviction that ‘Illiteracy cause povertyand literacy drives it away’ made him toestablish ‘Kalinga Institute of SocialSciences (KISS). He founded KIIT but he didnot enjoy the opulence rather he used themoney to keep KISS going the way, heonce envisaged. The small school with just125 tribal children in 1993 has now growninto the largest free residential institutionin the world for 25,000 tribal children.

His life from penury to opulence for othersmakes him an inimitable human being. He has many more plans up to his sleeves, which he would translate before ‘he sleeps’, for he has ‘miles to go’

‘‘ I believe all the good that happened to me is a result of the life I have led. ‘‘

He has received many awards for hisselfless service to society. The Awardsrecently conferred on him include-Gusi Peace Prize for 2014; “ISA Award forService to Humanity “ a top civilian awardof the Kingdom of Baharain, and “BESTWORKER”- Top Civilian Award of Mongolia.

To quote Dr. Kurien on the occasion ofFoundation Stone laying ceremony ofSchool of Rural Management speaks a lotabout his contribution in the field ofEducation.

The role of faculty broadly comprises in imparting domain knowledge, inspiring, advising andmentoring. The academic input follows the curriculum and mentoring involves guidance outside theacademic sphere. Mentoring includes regular informal contacts through a formal system, promotingextracurricular activities and most informally through social interactions. All these serve as opportu-nities for students to seek guidance and support from the faculty.

Faculty as MentorsA dedicated te am of 10 regular facultymembers of the School is a blend of ageand experience with youthful enthusiasm. They come from leading development in-stitutions in the country and around theworld, bringing to the students a wealth oftheir real-world experience and a vision forthe future. The School also benefited fromfew selected experienced faculties; mainlyin functional areas of management in KIITSchool of Management (KSOM) and KIITLaw School located next door. The regularfaculties are well supported by Visiting andGuest Faculties from academics, develop-ment sector and industries known for theirspecialized knowledge and experience.

The SHGs have beenproducing/making good quality handicrafts andalso learned the art of processing mango intodifferent products. Although the products wereof standard quality, these products have notbeen exposed to market on a regular basis. Anattempt was made to develop a marketingstrategy and also to assess the further trainingrequired through Training Need Analysis (TNA) methodology. A strategy to bring the productsto the market the products were branded as“Anandadhara”. During the eve of Durga Puja, different stalls were setup to promote the productsmade by the SHGs. The TNA analysis broughtforward the different trainings that the SHGsrequired and which needs to be provided basedon on their grading .The overall ownership andinitiative to implement the proposed strategyshould rest with SHGs, with facilitation fromWBSRLM.

Project Title: Study of handicraft and handloom Clusters identified by the company across thefour state of India-Odisha, Telengana, Andhra-pradesh, West Bengal for the CSR Programs.Host Organization: Gocoop Solutions and Services Private LimitedAuthor: Mahadev Prasad Saha, Sayan Kumar

Executive Summary:

The main aim of this project was to understandthe socio-economic profile and problems of theweavers in the identified cluster which can besolved through the companies’ act of CSR.Basically all the handloom cluster that we werecovered are undertaken in integrated handloomdevelopment scheme by the government of India. This study was proposed to identify suitablecraft clusters for CSR Programs. The identified

The corporate can step in to resolve two major problems through CSR funding viz. improving socialand economic conditions of the artisans and weavers and another is for introduction of improvedtechnology aimed at improving productivity. The other support which can be customised for eachcluster include - Training program for artisans and weavers for improvement in product design andquality; creating infrastructure like common facility centre, dye house etc.

clusters can be developed by Gocoop in partnership with Corporates under CSR Programs. Majorfinding of the project was that most of the clusters that we have studied have a problem of marketing. The Weavers of most clusters do not have direct access to the market. They are dependent on localtraders and agent of buyers. Almost all the weavers and artisans lack access to facilities like hospital, school, drinking water besides larger issues relating to housing and decent income . The Weavercommunity has embarked onto several new initiatives for their social and economic upliftment butthe desired collective action is not forthcoming for several reasons like internal strife and mutualcompetition etc.

An exploratory study to map and assess theperformance of self-help groups formed both bythe government and NGO’s in two blocks ofUdaipur District. Mapping involved meeting allthe stakeholders- government officials, heads oforganisation, their field staff, villagers and bankofficials present in the region. After finding outthe number of working SHG’s of eachorganisation, a sample size of 70 existing membersof SHG across all bodies were studied on arange of factors- demographics, reason for joining

Project Title: Value Chain Analysis of Pomegranate and Ber in and around Barmer, RajasthanHost Organization: TechnoServeAuthor: Advait Chourey and Ritu Kumari

groups, socio-economic profile, awareness regarding an income generation activity etc.. It was foundthat SHG’s of different organisations exhibited different traits even when economic profile of respondentswas found to be similar. It was also observed that some characteristics like repayment were moredependent on the organisation which they were part of rather than their economic status. Based onresults of the survey and FGD’s organisation were evaluated on the basis of their functioning anddefunct SHG’s. Analysing the results a roadmap was prepared for FES if it wanted to work on theSHG model in that area taking note of the mistakes made by other organisations.

Executive Summary: A study to analyse thevalue-chain of two commercial Horticulturecrops- Pomegranate and Ber, to identify the gapsthroughout the chain and come up with actionplan to address the same. The sample consistedof 10% of the population of the farmers i.e. 60farmers for Pomegranate and 30 for Ber andother stakeholders viz. Commission agents,Wholesaler, retailer and consumer. The surveywas conducted with a structured questionnaireand a few group discussions. Mandis of nearbybig cities viz. Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, etc were covered to get a complete pictureof the supply chain and market potential of these crops.

The results indicate that majority of the produce was picked up directly by the agents on contractbasis and was sold to the market, with no mention of its origin i.e. Barmer pomegranate but underthe name of Nasik Pome to fetch higher prices. Providing direct linkage of farmers to the end marketcould result in better price realization for the farmers. More than 80% of the farmers sell their produceto the agents coming from Nasik and Ahmadabad on an average rate between 52-60/Kg. which is latersold at a price ranging from 120-140 a Kg.

Excess use of fertilizer and pesticide, fruit cracking and nematode infestation are serious issue of concerncausing a productivity estimated loss of 25% in productivity. Given the context of rural Management discipline, KSRM is highly conscious ofdistinct academic requirements of its MBA (Rural Management) Programme andin turn role and responsibilities in preparing students for an engaging andsatisfying career.

Inexceptional cases scores of other exams are also considered. The scores of al l these exams areconsidered to shortlist candidates for GD/PI. The final selection is made based on weighted score ofeach student considering his past academic performance, service experience, written exam and GD/PIscores.

Semester-wise Engagement: The MBA(RM) Programme spread over 4 Semesters weavesClassroom Sessions and Experiential Learning to constantly improve the insights gained and analyticalabilities of the students. Accordingly, each semester is divided into Classroom segments followed bya field component with appropriate variation in i ts object ives and content with progression ofProgramme from 1st to 4th Semester. The field component are uniquely designed to make the students to move up the learning curve ina gradual matter.

The 1st Fie ld Component i s named as Action Re-search Segment (ARS) is devoted to improve thelearning abilities of the students through 2 major fieldexercises viz. Village Micro Planning and Social Mobili-zation. The scope of work of each field exercise is jointlyworked out between KSRM and the Host Organization. The students are given field training o n PRA, MicroPlanning and Social Mobilization before moving to HostOrganization. The KSRM Students also get their primarylessons in understanding and working with rural com-munities as they have to compulsorily stay with ruralfamilies during the entire period of ARS.

The 2nd Field Component is named as Case StudySegment (CSS) is primarily directed at understand-ing the problem in its right perspective before tryingto address its solution. Our Ho st Organizat ions getbenefitted from the in depth analysis of problems withlack of clarity in addressing them through appropriateinterventions. The student who use both qualitativeand quantitative research methodology are able tozero down on nature of problem from the beneficiaryperspective leading to identification of appropriate

The 3rd Field Component is named as ManagementTraineeshi p Segment (MTS). Hav in g gainedpractical experience in conducting the field researchthe students are equipped to address more complexproblem through scientific research enquiry. In thissegment the host organization sent the problem set athand which are shared with the students at dependingin their interest and KSRM allocation procedure, theyfinally pick up a problem to work on this MTS Segment.

intervention on behalf of host organization. As KSRM believed that new knowledge need to be gen-erated through a systematic and scientific enquiry, therefore students are trained in Case Study Seg-ment before going to host organization.

All the above field segments are imparted in greater rigor through prior training in ResearchMethodology, constant guidance by the Faculty guide and Reporting Officer of the Host Organizationand final evaluation of the above by External Examiner at KSRM. The brief reports of Case StudySegment and Management Traineeship Segment are published annually by the School to give a senseof contribution by the students in generating new knowledge.

Our students handle complex projects sent by Organizations in the Management Traineeship Segmentwhich falls in the beginning of 4th Semester. The students are given extensive domain knowledge inthe 3rd Semester. This domain knowledge is delivered through structured courses like Agri BusinessManagement, Value Chain Analysis and Micro finance areas. Further value addition is done to thesecourses through guest lectures by practitioners, field visits and research assignments. The facultystudent collaborative research is also undertaken occasionally to generate knowledge in deficit areas.for eg. our students carried Rural Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Survey during ARS Component andused their findings during Students’ Conclave organized by them on the occasion of 3rd NationalRural Management Symposium at KSRM.

The KSRM students wi th extensive exposure to ground real i ty on three different occas io nssignificantly contribute to improving their soft skills. However KSRM makes organized effort toimprove their soft skill through structured training by Career Advisory and Augmentation Services(CAAS), a constituent of KIIT University.

We emphasize on offering a career to our students rather than a job. As apart of our career initiative, we start preparing students from the first yearitself through a process of personality and skill development to understandtheir strengths and goals. During second year, we prepare our students forcareer of their choice followed by a three step process- assessment, trainingwith customized career plan followed by re-assessme nt. The careerpreparat ion in terms of technical competence is backed by choice ofcourses made available to students in the IIIrd Semester followed by theField component of Management Traineeship Segment in the domain oftheir preference. This way we back student’s career choice in terms ofoffering techni cal compe te ncy and enhance his personalit y tra its.
