A subsidiary of eBay, Kijiji is a free access online classifieds site where people can connect with one another to exchange goods, ideas, and services. The site was first launched in February 2005 and was initially available only in Canada, France,

Germany, Italy, China, Japan, and Taiwan. Later that year, it was opened to Austria, Switzerland, and India. The word "Kijiji" means village in Swahili. Kijiji was launched in the United States on June 29, 2007 and has since been highly regarded as a worthy competitor to Craigslist. Craigslist, by the way, has long been THE force to be reckoned with in the online classifieds arena. Ironically, eBay holds a 25% stake in Craigslist. As of June 2009, Kijiji's U.S. site has been attracting nearly 7 million monthly unique visitors and has generated over a billion page views since it was launched. Kijiji currently has websites serving 34 countries including England, Spain, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. It is also currently the market leader in Canada, Germany, Italy and Taiwan.

Kijiji vs. Craigslist Although it's not yet as big as Craigslist, Kijiji is seen by many as having the upper hand over Craigslist. For one thing, Kijiji has eBay at its back whose mass marketing efforts have been attracting millions of people to the site. Another thing is that it also has eBay to rely on in refining its site search technology.

Joining Kijiji Users do not need to register to be able to post ads on the site. Kijiji generally allows anyone who has a valid email address to post ads on the site provided that the ads do not violate any of the site's policies. However, non-registered advertisers need to confirm every ad they post via email. Registering will eliminate the email confirmation process, as well as enable you to participate in discussions. To register: Go to http://www.kijiji.com On your very first visit, you will be taken to the Kijiji main United States homepage on which the names of various American cities are listed. Look for your city and click on it.

Click on the Register link located at the top-right corner of the page.

Fill out the form with the appropriate information and click on the Register button when you're done.

Check your email and click on the verification link.

Posting Ads Log in to your account. Click on the Post Ad tab located at the top of the page.

Click on the appropriate category for your item.

Fill out the form with the appropriate information:

Select your ad type (buying or selling) Enter the price of your item (you may also choose to offer your item for free,

or traded with another item, or specify your item's price on a need-to-know

basis) Enter the title of your ad Enter a description for your ad Upload an image for your ad Enter your location/address

Click on the Preview link to see what your ad will look like Click on the Post Your Ad button when your done.

Top Ads For those who want to give their ads more exposure, Kijiji offers paid ad services called "Top Ads" which appear at the top category listing pages. Top ads are payable through Visa and MasterCard credit cards and PayPal and last for seven days before being replaced with another ad.
