We spent a lovely afternoon atthe Poughill Revel and CuckooFair the other day; “CuckooFair?” When I looked on theback page of the programme, Idiscovered that many cornishvillages had their own nativenames. Stratton ‘Mice; StGennys ‘Wreckers’;Kilkhampton ‘Rooks’ and manymore. Odd, yet interesting. Everheard this?

“What d’you think you’re lookingat?”

“Dunno! Your label’s fallen off!”

We all have labels don’t we? I’ma husband, dad, grandfather &great-grandfather, Oh! Yes! andI remember…Vicar.

Some people give themselveslabels which they think fit. I’m an“All round good guy! Casual

From the Rectory ..hero! World traveller! Bonvivant! And all the rest - we allknow ‘em!

But what about those who arestruggling under the weight ofnames they have been called?Children who have been called‘Useless’ and those who arecalled cruel names becausethey are different. Some of theelderly who might feel they are‘burdens’ or ‘past their sell bydate’.

If we go further up the ladderthere are those whoreputations are destroyed bythe press; for those who havemade mistakes and never losethe tag of their errors. Labelscan keep people ‘down’ or liftthem up.

And what about the labels thateither we are given or we giveourselves: Everything we hearand believe about things thatare falsely spoken about us.

Labels can seriously limit ourpotential - that is if we believethem.

Take a minute to think abouthow you are identified - howothers see you. Do theydescribe the person you are?The ‘real You!’ Remember thatpoem by Robbie Burns it goes,

“Would some Power the gift Hegive us, to see ourselves asothers see us.”

Be proud of yourselves, butremember to be affirming toothers.

Rev Richard 11:8:15

Henry, as he was known throughoutthe bell ringing fraternity, was aquiet, unassuming person whose liferevolved around campanology, inwhich he was involved in so manydifferent ways and in many towersboth in the immediate area and alsoway beyond. He had rung, andrecorded his visits, all the ringablepeals in Cornwall and Devon and wasoften driving “Up-country” to ringin, perhaps, ten or more towersbefore driving back home. Moresurprisingly, not having had apassport until he was seventy, hejoined ringing tours in Australia,New Zealand, Canada and NorthAmerica.Coming to us at St. James, Kilkhampton,Henry very quickly became part of our“Volunteer army”. He joined the choir andsoon became Captain of the Tower where heworked tirelessly, maintaining the bells, organising ringing trips and competitions. Healso adjusted the Church clock and organisedtower flag changes as required. As a keengardener he provided a continuing stream ofseasonal produce “For the Church”. For someyears he served on the Parochial ChurchCouncil but resigned because he couldn’tmake many meetings due to his other ringingcommitments! The past two years have seen the vagaries ofold age catch up with Henry and, whilst hebecame unable to ring, he was still to befound in the tower on practise nights, optimistic that he would be better soon andalways cheerful and supportive of our“learners”.This was indeed “Our Henry” – who lived thelife he wanted, whose quiet generosityepitomised the man, the like of whom we shallnot see again soon. There have been, and will be, many tributes.A full peal of 3040 changes was rung thisvery day (Three hours continuous) at St.James by a team of his friends fromKensington, London, in Henry’s honour. He willbe sadly missed.

Rest in Peace Henry and Rise in Glory.

St James` Church,Kilkhampton, wasfull for thethanksgivingservice for the life ofHenry Trewin heldon Monday 27 July. The enthusiasticsinging of ringers`hymns, the movingdelivery of theeulogy by CarlHambley, Henry`snephew, and anamusing poem readby Fr RussenThomas made the

occasion a memorable event.Henry learned to ring on the banks of theTamar, at Landulph, and then joined theStratton band where he started his methodringing. He rang a quarter of Grandsire Doublesat Week St Mary in 1957 and his first of PlainBob Minor at St Juliot in 1958. His determinationto keep learning made him ring his first quarterof London Surprise Minor for his 80th birthday.Henry did not keep a record of his early ringing, but we believe that he rang 23 peals. He`d rungat every tower in Devon and Cornwall to the endof 2014, and in his retirement enjoyed travellingabroad for the first time to ring in Australia, NewZealand and North America.Of course, Henry did a lot for other ringers. Heorganized outings and competitions and helpedlocal towers at practices and service ringing. Hewas still scrambling nimbly over bellframesfitting new stays in his 80`s. He served asPresident of the TDGR of which he was thenmade a Life Vice-President and, as a mark ofthe respect with which he was held in our area, was also a Vice-President of the Guild ofDevonshire Ringers, a unique combination. The congregation of almost 250 who`d packedSt James` celebrated a ringer who`d devotedhimself to The Exercise. His close family, hisband at Kilk, fellow church choir members, andhis “ringing family” in Cornwall, Devon andfurther afield will miss him greatly. May Henryrest in peace.

KilkhamptonCHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

When I go away and stay in a B& B or visit a local pub for ameal I now look for otherpeoples’ parish newsletters!Comparing them with ours I’mstill trying to find one as good asours, not that I’m biased oranything! We recently had a visit from aPastor and his wife fromZambia. We think we havethings to complain about. Idon’t think so. I feltembarrassed when they told methey had no house of their own, they struggle to keep theirchildren in education, and theyhave just adopted two HIVorphans into their family, when

they can barely feed their own.God said in Psalm 68 v 6 “Hesets the lonely into families” andwe send them to A & E or socialservices, because it’s someoneelse’s duty to care. “Thegovernment should do it, that’swhat we pay our taxes for.”Everyone should care but me.God never said it; Jesus neverdemonstrated that we shouldnot care, or that it should not bepractical. So, I encourage you, findsomeone who is lonely and betheir friend, and that will be oneless lonely person in the world. You really can make adifference.Have a great month.Every blessing to you all.Albert Sloman, Pastor

I wish I could help. How many times have we said or heardthat? It’s not fair. It makes me MAD.MAD is such a negative word. How canwe turn a negative word into positiveaction? On 3 August a group of KilkhamptonParishioners got together and askedthemselves these very questions. An idea had been muted around theprevious weekend about the possibilityof forming an organisation to raisefunds to help support Kilkhamptonparishioners who experience lifechanging circumstances.A gathering took place and the onedefinitive answer that came out of thegathering was that it was a good ideaand somehow we have to make it work. How we can help, when we can help, oreven can we help, opens up a wholehost of questions and complexities. However, we all agreed that we dowant to help.So a committee was formed andconsists of the following people :-Chairman – Mark VickerySecretary – Mike WestlakeTreasurer – Luke FrancisCommittee – Ian Heard, RolandNancekivell, Val Shadrick, KeianHarvey, Sue Harvey. Each committee member made a smalldonation to get a bank account open.So there we are a new organisation hasbeen formed. Our aim is to raise funds to be able tooffer any Parishioner a little financialhelp if they experience life changingcircumstances.

What does that mean? A couple ofexamples are anybody that finds outthat they are suffering from a long termillness, or somebody who’s houseburns down. These are just a couple ofoccasions that we feel we would like tohelp people, there are others. How are we going to raise funds? Weare hoping to do a couple of fundraising events a year to keep us in thepublic eye, but also we would begrateful to receive any kind of donationthat anybody feels that they are able tooffer. As this is a local organisation run byvolunteers there will be no costsinvolved, so 100% of the moneydonated will go towards helpingKilkhampton people.Who will be eligible? Anybody thatresides inside theParish ofKilkhampton. How and when wedistribute the helpwill quite simply beas and when theneed arises andsubject to moniesbeing available. Thecommittee will beopen to writtennominations fromParishioners on whowe should be offeringhelp to, there willalso be anapplication formavailable ifsomebody would liketo apply themselves. All of this will be donein the strictest ofconfidence.

What do you think? Good idea? BadIdea?I am sure that there are so manyquestions that people will have that weare unable to answer them all here, sowe thought that we would have acoffee morning on Saturday 10th

October at The Chapel Rooms from 10-1 and would like to invite everybodyalong to hear what we are all about. There will be a suggestion box thereso that you can write down yoursuggestions (good and bad) so that wecan set this Parish Support Trust up inthe best way possible.MAD. Make A Difference.Together let’s turn a negative into apositive.

KILKHAMPTON FETE REVIEW by Lesley Watson (Fete secretary)

‘TREE’ BOOK GROUPThe book for review at the Julymeeting was:by Ildefenso FalconesA masterful epic of love, war, treason, plague, famine, witchcraft, anti-Semitism and theInquisition.14th-century Spain, the medievalcity of Barcelona is enjoying agolden age of prosperity. Itshumblest inhabitants are building, stone by stone, a magnificentchurch to overlook their harbour. This is the Cathedral of the Sea: achurch to be built for the people bythe people. In its shadow, Arnau, a young serfon the run from his feudal lord, struggles to earn his freedom. After famine, plague and thwartedlove, Arnau's fortunes begin toturn when King Pedro makes him abaron as a reward for his couragein battle. But he is also forced tomarry Eleanor, a ward of the Kingwhom he does not love. Hisnewfound status excites jealousyfrom his friends who plot hisdownfall with devastatingconsequences. Arnau's journeyfrom slave to nobleman is the storyof a struggle between good andevil that will turn Church againstState and brother against brother. This is a simple story good v evil.It is engaging, readable andatmospheric creating a sense ofmedieval Spain. However, on thedown side, it is plot driven relatingthe life of Arnau, who seems to

‘TREE’ BOOK GROUP Cont’d by Thomas ChristopherGreeneArthur Winthrop is a middle agedheadmaster at an elite school inVermont. Through flashbacks thereader gets to know Arthur whenhe was a young boy. How did hemanage to get himself into asituation where at the beginningof the book we find him walkingnaked in the snow? This is a book of two halves. Thesecond half unravels the clearlydistorted and unreliable series ofevents that Winthrop haddescribed in the previous sectionof the book. It gradually becomes

clear just how far his psychologicaldecline has taken him.The book seems to lose its waysomewhat in places. Patrick’s RamblingsThis year’s Fete was withoutdoubt a huge success for theVillage, although for yours trulyit was indeed an abject failure!Rejected by the Red Arrows, totally ignored by the RussianEmbassy and then only oneother entry in my suggestedFete Wacky Hat Competition.

I did, however, have a greattime, firstly as the OfficialProgramme Seller with myWacky Red Arrows Hat (thanksto its creator Glenda - andapologies to the lady to whom Iwas selling a programme whenthe hat fell off and hit her on thehead!).

Just before the crowning I alsoreceived a reminder about thebear costume that I hadrequested in an earlier editionto fool GCHQ into thinkingthere was a Russian Tupulevsurveillance plane (nicknameda Bear) in our vicinity on FeteDay.

Well Mrs Cleave very kindlyresponded to the appeal with acostume that she had mademany years ago, but as no onevolunteered to wear it, it wasdown to me. So I dashed backhome, changed into thecostume and then ran throughthe churchyard, where a groupof youngsters were sitting. I amsure that on that day anytexting picked up by GCHQonly referred to a nut case seenin the churchyard rather than aRussian Bear!

The remainder of Fete Daymore than made up for theabove and was great fun, although I ate too much curry(thanks Peter & Net) and toomany cakes ( thanks to SylviaHambley, helpers and the restof Kilk!)

Just for therecord, I amfrequentlychided forwriting a loadof rubbish in theKPN but twoweeks ago I alsowrote a letterwhich waspublished in theIndependent. I waslater delighted tolearn from SylviaMorrell that this letterhas been republishedin The WeekMagazine, as one oftheir five Pick of theWeek Letters from thenational papers. Need Isay more?

Despite the torrential downpourssome twenty seven members andguests of the Bude-StrattonTwinning Association met for afund raising Curry Night at ChurchLodge, where Glenda Lavenderand Susan Pearse presentedthem with a delicious banquet ofseven different curries and avariety of side dishes. UNCLE ERIC’S PAGEA medieval feast

The flaming torches fixed up high light up the ancient hallBright flicker on the tapestries that hang along the wall.A sturdy table, made from oak, with benches either sideAwaits the hunting party, just returning from their ride.

They clatter through the open door with sword and hawk and dogThe roaring fire, the torches’ smoke, the atmosphere’s like fog! They seat themselves, all know their place, each with a pewter dishThen slake their thirsts with foaming ale; to eat, their present wish.

The dogs lie on the rush-strewn floor each near his master’s place,With muddy coats and weary paws, from running with the chase. The hawks sit, hooded, on a perch, the swords lie in a pile,There noble lord then enters in and strides along the aisle.

He seats himself on his high chair, his wife sits at his side,With golden hair and a silken gown, she is a recent bride. He greets the hungry chatt’ring throng with cheery wave and grinHis voice rings round the noisy hall “Now let the feast begin!”

The boar’s head and the feathered swan are carried in on highAnd dishes full of roasted meat with giant crusty pie.The men fall silent, knives in hand, to wait their turn for foodThe sight and smell of what’s to come, adds to the festive mood.

A minstrel plays upon his lute, the sound rings loud and clearA juggler demonstrates his skill, the thirsty call for beer! They set to with great appetite their hunger to abateThe servants bring great hunks of bread, they’re used to wipe theplate.

The first course now is eaten up, they wait and stamp their feetThey know they will get flans and cakes, with honey, soft and sweet. The men replete, the dogs well fed, all’s well with man and beast;A happy way to end the day, this medieval feast.

What am I ?An item of weather (one word)

My first is in country and also intownMy next is in hailstones, whichsometimes pelt down. The third’s in umbrella, whichyou may well needThe fourth is in lightning, whichyou’re sure to heed. This one’s found in deluge anddownpour as wellThe next’s in ferocious andfierce, truth to tell. This one. is in rainfall and riveralsoAnd this is in sunshine, whichthis does not show. The ninth is in tempest andtorrent, which roarsThe tenth is in flooding, whichthis may well cause. The next is in rivers, whichalways will riseThe last is in murky when thisfills the skiesAnd my last is a thing to avoid, ifyou’re wise.
