As Patron of the Irish Association of Suicidology, I would liketowelcometo Ireland themanydelegates to theTwentyFourthBiennial Congress of the International Association for SuicidePrevention.ItisanhonourfortheIrishAssociationofSuicidology,whichdoesmatchlessworktohighlightthetragicstoryofsuicide,andattempted suicide, in Ireland, tobehosting an internationalconference devoted to exploring‘Preventing SuicideAcross theLifespan:DreamsandRealities’.
The importance of this conference to diminishing the incidenceof suicide, the single most important cause of violent deaths intheworld,cannotbeexaggerated.Yourexplorationsofinnovativeapproaches to theunderstandingof thecausesof suicide,andtoassuagingitsconsequences,willbemajorcontributionstoreducingtherateofsuicideandtoalleviatingtheanguishofthebereaved.

ItismygreatpleasuretowelcomeyoutotheXXIVBiennialCongressofIASPwhich will take place from 28thAugust to the 1st September 2007, hostedby the IrishAssociation of Suicidology, in the Irish National Events Centre,Killarney,Co.Kerry,IrelandunderthepatronageofMaryMcAleese,PresidentofIreland.
ThetitleoftheCongress‘PreventingSuicideAcrosstheLifespan:DreamsandRealities’affordsanopportunity forustoexploreallaspectsofSuicidologyand see how our dreams and aspirations of suicide prevention match therealitiesofhowtheyaretranslatedintoactioninvarioussettingsaroundtheworld. Weusedthewordrealitiesbecausecircumstancesaroundtheworldvarysoenormouslyandresearchfindingsdonotalwaystranslatefromcountrytocountryoracrosscultures.
WehopetoallowqualitytimefordiscussioninthisCongressparticularlyintheplenary sessions. Themain topics, following from theplenary sessions,willbetrackedthroughtheCongresssothatdelegatesarenotfacedwiththefrustrating situation where several sessions dealing with their main interesttakeplaceatthesametime.
WehopethattheCongresswillbenewandinnovativewithmanynewfacesandnewideas.OnesuchinnovationistheintroductionofMasterClassesonResearch.Thesesessionswillaffordanopportunityfordelegatesembarkingon a career in Suicidology to present research proposals to experiencedworldexperts in the fieldandgetvaluableadviceand insights intoresearchmethodology and also on how to write and submit papers to appropriatejournals.
WewillendeavourtoensurethatthescientificcontentoftheCongressisofthehighestorderwhileatthesametimemakingsurethatIrelandwillliveuptoitsreputationforwelcomeandhospitalityinthesocialprogramme,whichafterallisaveryimportantaspectofanyCongress.ThesuccessofthisCongressdependsonyouractiveparticipation. IASPinternationalcongressesareveryspecialevents.Theyprovideauniqueopportunity todiscoverand share themost recentadvances in researchandpractice on suicide prevention. This XXIV International Congress buildsuponIASP’s47yearsofexperienceaswellasfeedbackfrompastcongresses.The plenary sessions are re-designed to provide for greater interaction anddiscussionofkeyissue’sandtheprogrammewillprovideforpresentationsonawiderangeofnewdiscoveriesinthefield.Thecongresswillhostpresentationsby the world’s most renowned suicidologists, programme planners andpractitioners.
This congress also marks the 100 year anniversary of the SalvationArmy’sactivities in suicide prevention and will be held less than two weeks beforethe5thWorldSuicidePreventionDay,observedon10thSeptember2007.Thecongressisopentoallpersonsconcernedwithsuicidepreventionandresearchonsuicide.Therewillbeseveralsessionsonsurvivorsofsuicideanddelegateswill come from a wide range of organization and disciplines, includingvoluntaryassociations,mentalhealthprofessionals,programmeplannersandacademic researchers. Thisyear’s theme focusesour attentionona lifespanperspectiveinsuicideprevention.Participantswillbeencouragedtoconsiderthespecificityandcommonalitiesinsuicidalbehavioursatdifferentlifestages.

TheIASPCongressinIrelandwillcommemoratethecentenaryofSalvationArmy’sworkinsuicideprevention.In1907thefounderoftheSalvationArmy,GeneralWilliamBooth,commencedthefirstsuicidepreventionprogramintheworldwiththeestablishingofAnti-suicideBureausinLondon.Thisworkspreadoverseasthesameyearinparallelwithawiderangeof innovativeaccommodationandemployment-basedschemes.TheSalvationArmyoperates in111countries andSalvationArmypersonnel fromthesecountries are invited toregisterasdelegatesandtosubmitabstractsforpresentation.TheIASPCongressprogramwillincludeworkshops/presentationsforandbymembersoftheSalvationArmy.

Delegatesare invitedtosubmitabstract fororal,workshop,symposiumorposterpresentations. Theabstractsshouldbesubmittedelectronicallywherepossibletoabstracts@iasp2007.org.Abstractsmustbesubmittednolaterthan1stMarch2007
guidelines
Thetextoftheabstracts,whichmustbesubmittedontheabstractform,shouldbeinEnglish,limitedto250words(excludingtitleandauthordetails).Itshouldcontainthetitleofthepaper,theauthors’namesanddetails(seesamplebelow).Theabstractshouldbeinsinglespacing,TimesNewRoman12pt.Usestandardabbreviations.Theabstractwillbeprintedassubmittednoproof-readingwillbedonebytheorganisers.Pleasenotethatasthecontactperson,youwillreceiveallcorrespondenceandareresponsiblefornotifyingallothersinvolvedinyourpresentation.

Negativelife-eventsassociatedwithdeliberateself-harm(DSH)wereinvestigatedinanAfricancontextinUganda.PatientsadmittedatthreegeneralhospitalsinKampala,UgandawereinterviewedusingaLugandaversion(predominantlanguageinthestudyarea)oftheEuropeanParasuicideStudyInterviewScheduleIwiththeresultsofthelifeeventsandhistoriesmodulereportedinthispaper.ThecategoriesofnegativelifeeventsinchildhoodthatweresignificantlyassociatedwithDSHincludedthoserelatedtoparents,significantothers,personaleventsandthetotalnegativelifeeventsloadinchildhood.ForthelaterlifetimeperiodthenegativelifeeventsloadinthepartnercategoryandthetotalnegativelifeeventsinthistimeperiodwereassociatedwithDSH.InthelastyeartimeperiodthenegativelifeeventsloadrelatedtopersonaleventsandthetotalnumberofnegativelifeeventsinthistimeperiodwereassociatedwithDSH.AstatisticallysignificantdifferencebetweenthecasesandcontrolsonthetotalnumberofnegativelifeeventsreportedovertheentirelifetimeoftherespondentswasalsoobservedsuggestingadoseeffectofnegativelifeeventsonDSH.Genderdifferenceswerealsoobservedamongthecases.Inconclusion,lifeeventsappeartobeanimportantfactorinDSHinthisculturalenvironment.Theimplicationoftheseresultsfortreatmentandthefuturedevelopmentofsuicideinterventionsinthiscountryarediscussed.
