  • 1. Killer/ Villains & VictimCostume Research By Nicole McClelland

2. Scream Here we see a conventional type of costume for a killer, black of which has connotations of death, night and isolation. It has evident camouflage in the night time making it easier to be unnoticed. The mask is also very effective to keeping the identity of the killer completely behind it, making it harder to identify and obviously the mask is effectively scary 3. Jack Nicholson Here we see casual clothing of the decade and location of America, simple jeans, checked top, jacket and yellow industrial boots. This use of red gives the audience connotations of death, pain and blood which is what this person will most likely inflict on his victims. This killers costume is very easily disguised into everyday, casual life which is good but also in my opinion very boring. 4. Freddy Kruger Here we have a simple, yet effective costume. A hat is used as a property as well as the hand with the knifes. The costume consists of a black and red striped jumper which includes the connotation of which I have stated previously (Red gives the audience connotations of death, pain and blood. Black of which has connotations of death, night and isolation) which makes the costume stronger, in my opinion than both the previous costumes put together. The ripped jumper is also a good idea as you dont always see their clothes perfect in a movie as they are going to be killing. 5. Hannibal Lector This costume challenges the normal conventions of a killers costume. All white has connotations of purity, innocence and life. Which is by far not what this man means In what he's wearing. Maybe the white could signify that he's seen as insane as a stereotypical colours for mental asylums is white. 6. The Penguin The make up within this costume is the most effective and relates directly with the colour scheme of the villain/ killer of black ad white. 7. The Joker Typical stereotyping of what we perceive when we think of a joker in relation to the colours of purple, green and orange and make up. The make up is very scary, but effective we see jokers as clowns etc the use of a suit seems to rank him higher in society as we associate suits with higher paid careers. The hair is very unusual but related directly to the name the joker and the make up due to it being like the make up of a clown. 8. Jason Voorhees Again we see casual clothing with has bee ripped, dirty and badly kept which is stereotypical of a killer and especially with this particular one. The hockey mask hides his identity perfectly but at the same time inflicts fear on the victims. The weapon is unusual to see in a horror, but thats what makes it stand out from other horrors. We are left thinking whether this is a real person due to the casual clothing or if he's a paranormal being/ monster. 9. Very much like scream with the all black costume and almost white make up with a deranged face is very effective and scary. The wand obviously is his weapon being a dark wizard. This particular character has no other disguise because he knows people know his name and face so therefore doesn't need to have anything to take away his identity. 10. Scream VictimsCasual, fashionable clothing is seen here, showing the innocence of the characters as well as the vulnerability. 11. Friday the 13th Victims This casual clothing can most definitely be seen as an old casual which is a correct assumption due to the film being released originally in the 1980s. 12. Conclusion of research From this research in relation to killers I have decided that an effective costume consists of either white, red or black, casual can be effective, but masks and key properties are more effective. The less identity presented the more effective the killer shall be as well as being scary which is most obviously the key to a good killer as seen on my previous slides. Victims, I have decided from this research that casual, normal clothing portrays their innocence and vulnerability which is what I aim to do with the victims in our trailer.
