The Music and Dance Festival

I expect we must "comment" on therecent Festival and the onlyappropriate thing to say is that wethink that it was one of the best thingsto happen to the Village for a verylong time. We particularly likedDanny Kyle's remark, quoted in oneof the "big newspapers" - "One of thehappier events in the musical calendarwith a bunch of the friendliest localsin the land." OK. Maybe you wouldexpect him to say that since he wasthe Festival Director, but we wouldlike to think he meant it! Certainly, everywhere we went we found a happymixture of locals and visitors, allthoroughly enjoying themselves.Thank you Danny for directing a firstclass Festival!

Killin Medical Practiceand Research

Killin Medical Practice has agreed to jointhe General Practice Research Frameworkof the Medical Research Council. TheFramework allows collection ofinformation from a large number ofindividual practices which makes thestudies more "powerful". In the past, practices in the framework have tendedto be large and in towns. We feel it isimportant that smaller, more ruralpractices are also represented. We expectany studies undertaken will help toimprove patient care. We hope to startwork over the next year. Mostly we willbe looking at how care is delivered. Wemay be expected to join in the assessmentof new treatments or new drugs.

Any patients involved in specific studieswould be informed beforehand andconsent obtained. At that point patientswould be given a full explanation of theaims of the study.

To select appropriate practices forspecific studies, the Medical ResearchCouncil needs to look at numbers ofpatients in a practice, for example, patients of a specific age or with certainillnesses. At that preliminary stage suchinformation would be in general terms,no specific patients would be identified. This sort of information is held in ourpractice computer. We have been askedto make it widely known that, under theData Protection Act, you have the rightto refuse permission, even for suchgeneral disclosure. We would emphasisethat specific information about particularpatients will not be divulged withoutwritten consent.

If you would like to discuss this matterfurther, please feel free to contact thesurgery on 01567 820213. Dr DavidSyme, Dr David Blaney, Dr ElaineTurner.

A weekend of Music and Song

Herewith some of the pictures of thatmarvellous weekend! Dougie McLean(he of the famous beer ad) along withthe one and only Jimmy MacGregor atthe Falls of Dochart no less - just toprove it actually happened! And also aview of the "Festival Campsite", whichused to be known as Breadalbane Park!It incidentally functioned with no troubleand was cleaned up afterwards, mainly

the campers themselves. We also showa scene from the Appalachian ClogDancers "show" in the McLaren Hall, which, according to Allan Walker, was"something else". Well attended by the"natives", Sheila Aitken, MargaretCampbell and (who else?) Kay Riddellwere judged to be "nice little movers",so he says. The Festival officially endedon Sunday night with a concert featuring

the world famous Aly Bain and PhilCunningham, the Sangsters and SheilaWellington. The McLaren Hall waspacked! Now we know why Killin is agood venue for music Festivals - we'vegot a really big Village hall, that is apartfrom the scenic splendour. There wasonly one minor hitch that night - two ofthe performers tried to tell the same joke- the second got nowhere.

We look forward eagerly to the nextFestival.

Situated on the south side of Loch Tay directly opposite the Ben Lawers range, thistraditional wayside inn enjoys a tremendous panorama of mountains and Loch. The Hotel

has 14 bedrooms, all having en suite facilities, and tea/coffee making facilities. We can offerguests fishing (Salmon, Trout and Char) on Loch and river, and for the golfer there are

several courses within a 10 mile radius For the outdoor enthusiast the area is ideal walkingcountry, as well as offering sailing, water skiing, pony trekking, amongst others.Winners of the Perthshire Tourist Board / Glen Turret Distillery Awards for the

Dear Sir

The Music FestivalWe would like to take this opportunityto acknowledge the hard work on thepart of John Mallinson and hiscommittee in making the first KillinFolk Festival a tremendous success.

It must be gratifying for them to seesuch a great response to their effortsand we think that everyone concernedwould agree that the festival went along way to "putting Killin on themap ".

All the people we spoke to (many ofwhom had no previous knowledge ofthe area) were of the opinion thatKillin is a marvellous place and theywill certainly be back. The many localpeople who attended the concerts andsessions also seemed to be having agreat time.

McLaren Hall plcIn these days of doom and gloom overthe tourist industry, it is sad and it isunfair to find village businesses haveto face an unexpected threat to theirprospects.

Is it right that the McLaren Hall -gifted to our village in trust - shouldbe used to undermine local traders, its own supporters and beneficiaries?Along with other villagers we aredeeply thankful to those who shoulderthe responsibility of running the Hall- the Trustees, Managers, theHallkeeper. We thank them so verymuch for all they do. There is amatter about which we have beendeeply hurt though.

In 1936 the Hall (or more properly,Halls) was gifted by Mr McLaren tothe villagers and residents of Killinand District. By common usage it isa public building; we are all thebeneficiaries Mr McLaren had inmind. Its ownership is held in trustby trustees for us all; its managementis undertaken on our behalf by theHall Management Committee. It isthe job of a trustee to take the placeof Mr McLaren and to "read" his mind

for today. And to guide them there isa Trust Deed.

As you may know the Hall has beenhired out to outside traders who arein direct competition with locals. Wewant to ask if this is fair. We wantto ask if this is right? Is this whatMr McLaren intended his gift to beused for? Outside traders have zeroor few overheads; they make no orlittle contribution to the village"economy" or its life. We ask is itright that a public institution, heldin trust for our benefit, be used toundermine local business and at anunfair advantage? Had Mr McLarenthis in mind when he gifted the Hallsto us?

In common with all other villagerswe are beneficiaries in terms of theTrust yet it appears to be impossibleto provide us with a copy in a simpleway. A Deed of this nature is in facta public document. A copy will havebeen registered with the Books ofCouncil and Session in Edinburghwhere a copy may be made availablefor a pound or two. Yet it seems tous much more simple to hold a copy

available to all the beneficiaries, say,at Killin's library. If the Trust permitscommercial activities then we believeit should be used to add to the villageeconomy, not undermine it.

Youth ClubI am writing in reply to the letter printedin the May edition regarding the youthin the village.

I was surprised to hear the criticism thatthere is not a youth club in the area. The staff at the Ardeonaig OutdoorCentre currently run the YF which isattended by a great number of youngstersincluding myself. Activities includeregular trips to the cinema, ten pinbowling and swimming and closer tohome Ab-seiling, rock climbing, canoeing, archery and wide games. It isnot all physical exertion however, onother occasions we play computer gamesand watch videos. Although YF is heldat Ardeonaig, transport is kindly providedby the Centre.

Youth Fellowship takes place on Sundayevenings at 6.30 pm when we are pickedup at the car park outside the bank.

This is not the only club offered to theyouth in village. Others include

badminton, karate, drama, golf, Boys'Brigade, Brownies/Guides and footballand coupled with a wide range of extracurricular activities offered at McLarenHigh School. I feel there are alreadyample facilities for the youth in this area.Setting up a new youth club would onlyserve to drain finances which would bemore appropriately spent on existingresources.

As I will be leaving the village inSeptember, I would like to thank everyoneinvolved in the numerous clubs of whichI have been a member. I am sure that Ispeak for everyone when I say thai allthe help and contribution of the leadersis greatly appreciated. These clubsinclude the drama club, golf, football andtennis. I would like to give a specialthanks to Chris McLarty, Captain of theBoys' Brigade who helped me attain myPresidents award this year. I wish Chrisand his fellow officers all the best in thecoming years.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge thehard work of the leaders of other villageorganisations such as Mother andToddlers, Sunday School/Lazer Group,Green Team, Heritage and the WRI tomention but a few. For a village the sizeof Killin, I think there is a wide andvaried range of clubs and societiescatering for all ages from infants tosenior citizens.

Dear Sirs

Youth ClubI would like to reply to the letterasking about a youth club. Ipersonally think it's a great idea andhave wondered why we don't haveone, but now someone else hasthought about it I am willing to help.If most people think that having ayouth club would be a good idea thenI am willing to write to the DistrictCouncil to get us started.

Dear Sir

I write in reply to an editorial trailerin last issue's letter by some villageyoungsters requesting a youth club

Together with many people in thevillage I would like to take greatexception to the request for us to geton and do something, with theinference that very little was beingdone. There are a great number ofadults, both old and young, who giveup their time to provide a multitudeof activities on most evenings aroundthe year. Most children, teenagersand parents realise that Killin is verywell served by these generous peoplewhom I'm sure most of us wish tothank very much.

Linda Frost

Dear Sir

I am writing in response to the letterin the last edition of Killin Newsconcerning the lack of entertainmentfor local youth.

I would like to draw attention to theyouth club which meets at ArdeonaigOutdoor Centre each Sunday eveningfor most of the year. It is linked withKillin Church and was held in theChurch Hall but moved to the Centrebecause it was felt to be a better venuewith the Sports Hall and GamesRoom. We do indoor and outdoorgames, sometimes activities such askayaking or archery and occasionallygo on trips (eg to Quasar).

The Club is open to teenagers of 13upwards to school leaving and all inthat age range are welcome. Our firstmeeting after the Summer will be onSunday 27 August.

The group is picked up outside thebank at 6.30 pm and returned homeat 9.30 pm. If there are any questionsplease feel free to phone Irene on829743.

Youth ClubFirst, congratulations on your'Countryside' award. I remembervisiting the founder Robertson Scott, when I was a small child and I stillhave it as a gift every year. Everyonewho sees the Killin News is mostimpressed.

Regarding the suggestion for a YouthClub, I feel that a few journeys onthe school bus talking to those whowould be the members, might be abetter way of reaching all the kids(rather than just those who might

come to meetings). I feel that a reallygood leader is the first essential forsuccess, someone who can attract andcontrol the rough diamonds and watchover the shy violets.

Dear Sir

Drama ReviewI would like to say something aboutthe comments made about the KillinDrama Club. I felt reasonablyannoyed after reading it.

"It was disappointing that some of theyoung actors could not be clearlyheard by the audience." Well at leastwe have the courage to stand up andperform a little piece which is morethan some people would do.

"Perhaps with a firmer guiding handthey could excel." I think that this isunfair, if you are prepared tocomplain why not be prepared to dosomething about it. Can I suggestthat acting is more than justperforming to the audience. It isabout being prepared to attendregularly, co-operate withcompanions, having a good time andchannelling our creative energy ratherthan becoming frustrated anxiousyoungsters.

I can only say that the unfair reporterwas short sighted and biased in theirattitude.

Loch Lomond Anglers' Visit

On Sunday 25 June the annual visittook place by members of the Vale ofLeven Angling Club.

Seventeen friends of the KillinAnglers arrived for the outing andwere met by their hosts at themoorings on the Lochay. Nine boatswith accompanying ghillies set outunder the blazing sun to do battle inthe 80 degree heatwave.

Conditions were difficult to say theleast, but fish were seen and the lightwind made it possible for trout to betempted to rise to carefully placedflies.

The morning session ended with twofish being landed and one luckyangler, Harry, had the excitement ofhaving a salmon swirl at his cast inMorenish Bay.

At the end of the day everyonegathered at the Dundaramh Hotel tocompare sunburns and enjoy a coldrefreshment and sandwiches. The daywas pronounced successful by theLomond Anglers despite the hot sunand lack of fish.

The return visit by the Killin Anglersand friends to Loch Lomond will takeplace on Saturday 26 August.

Those wishing to attend should givetheir names as early as they can toKevin at Fishers Hotel in order thattransport can be booked. Specialthanks to all who helped our Lomondfriends enjoy the day.

Angling Club Update

The members taking part in thecompetitions to date this year hasshown an encouraging increase fromthe previous season, especially in theattendance of much needed new blood.Members should attempt to supportthese competitions and ensure thenewer anglers are aware of the safeareas to fish and that proper etiquetteis observed.

The numbers of fish weighed in hasalso increased, at present 50 beingbooked over the three competitions.

Only one cup has been decided, thePeter Ross, which was won by IanDownie with a bag weighing 21b 12oz.Ian also leads the club championshipwith the combined total of 61b 1ozand also has the heaviest bag to dateof 31b 5oz with Stuart MacDonaldweighing in the heaviest fish at llb8oz ... still much to fish for!

I apologise for re-arranging the dateof the competition on 18 June whichclashed with the Folk Festival to1 July, this will be noted for nextyear.

The salmon catch has been less thanat this time last season but the qualitymuch better with the average weightup. The run of fish has been fairlyheavy going through the Dochart withsome seen in the 301b plus category, which is encouraging for the futureand there still appears to be asubstantial head of salmon in theLoch.

The Club is continuing with its policyof improving the facilities formembers and visitors. The Loch wasstocked with brown trout early in theseason, the muddy area at the jettywas dug out and bottomed and NeilCairns and his helpers rebuilt thebridge to the Salmon Pool which willgive the Club's members safer accessand the hand rails which are in placeare a benefit for those fishing bothmain pools.

Many thanks to all who assisted.
