These of some of pieces I produced whilst in Kilve. I have used a combination of watercolours, fine liner and coloured pencils.

Surface Design Brief My brief is to create a collection of wallpapers inspired by my visit to

Kilve, which can be sold in Liberty.

Current wallpapers sold in Liberty

After looking at the current wallpapers which were being sold in Liberty I was surprised by the lack of variation in colour of the designs. The wallpapers have been designed with a very limited colour palette. This may be to contrast to the intricate designs within the wallpaper. This is something I will need to consider when designing my collection of wallpapers.

William MorrisFor my first proposal I have decided to look at the work of William Morris as his work has been heavily influential in Liberty and the prints which are sold there. His work links well with the natural theme of this project therefore if I were to base a collection of wallpapers around his work and Kilve, it would relate to the brief well.

Directly influenced by nature and nature forms and shapes. Fills the design with shapes by layering and overlapping., creating no empty space.

Pattern ideas From researching into William Morris I then wanted to

create my own simple patterns which could be repeated.

Orla Kiely For proposal two I decided as a contrast textile designer

to William Morris to look into the work of Orla Kiely . Like Morris her work has been influenced closely to nature however she has taken a more simplified approach. She has abstracted shapes within nature and created a very simple pattern.

Pattern ideasThese are some quick patterns I produced inspired by Orla Kiely . I found it quite hard to produce patterns both inspired by my photos from Kilve and in the style of Orla Kiely. I feel these are the weakest of my designs and still need a lot of work.

I think this is the strongest of my designs, it is inspired by my previous watercolour study of the pebbles on the beach however I have changed the colours which are influenced by Orla Kiely

Matisse The last artist I have looked closely at is Henri Matisse.

As previously I have looked at textile designers I wanted to look at a different approach of an artist. I chose Matisse and his cut outs in particular because I love his use of colours and the simple repeated shapes contrasted on complimentary coloured backgrounds. I think these shapes and colours could work really well as a repeated pattern.
