Representatives of the Kimberley Refugee Resettlement Group — Graham Smith and Colin Mackenzie — vis-ited the Kimberley Rota-ry Club on Wednesday to provide an update on their efforts to bring two refugee families to Kim-berley.

The KRRG was formed in November of 2015 to represent Kim-berley in support of the growing crisis in Syria. It is estimated about four million Syrians are out-side their own country, mainly in Jordan, Leba-non and Turkey, and eight million are dis-placed within Syria. Half of these refugees are children.

Smith says that it isn’t likely that any family

would arrive before the second quarter of this year. These things take time, and there is much to be done beforehand.

That work includes finding housing, and furnishing those homes. The families will be ar-riving with little more than a suitcase and will therefore need every-thing set up for them.

This means fundrais-ing. Smith says that bringing in two families means about $54,000 must be in place. About $20,000 of that will come from the government of Canada. The rest must be raised, either through donation or in-kind.

The KRRG has been divided into teams; re-settlement planning, fundraising, finance and communications.

B y the late 1950s it was very clear that the old city

jail, in use from 1911 in the basement of city hall was entirely inadequate. Actually, it was very clear much earlier than that but it was during the late 1950s that city council sought to seriously seek a solution.

The city hall jail, when first constructed, was certainly an im-provement on the previ-ous ramshackle city lockups. Cranbrook had its own small city police force and both the offi-cers and the criminal element seemed of co-

Mayor R.E. Sang outline the top priorities for the year to come: 1) City ex-pansion to the east (Pinecrest); 2) Expan-sion of the old airport then situated to the west of what was soon to be-come “The Strip”; and 3) Obtain a new Federal Building to serve as RCMP headquarters for the East Kootenay, in-cluding a new jail block.

The city had land available. To the imme-diate north of the Fire Hall No.1, on 11th Ave-nue, was the fire hall

seems to have been the case.

In April, the council submitted building de-sign suggestions to Nel-son architect David Fairbanks, who, in turn, submitted a sketch to council in January, 1960, at an estimated con-struction cost of $100,000. A committee of Mayor Sang, Alder-men J. Ward and S. Mc-Cleary formed to deal with the matter. The cost estimate rose to just under $118,000 within two weeks which in-cluded all mechanical trades, light fixtures, the (politically correct) “prisoner accommoda-tions” and professional fees but not furnishings, equipment, landscap-ing and necessary bylaw expenses. A final figure of $124,000 went before the populace in April, 1960, and was approved by a vote of 405 to 66.

Local contractor A.E. Jones made a successful bid for the construction rights and worked throughout the winter and spring to complete

the building and the po-lice and magistrate moved into their spa-cious new headquarters on May 18, 1961. The RCMP Administrative Building officially opened on May 27, with 200 citizens given guid-ed tours by scarlet-clad Mounties and city alder-men. The parking lot to the rear and landscap-ing was still under con-struction. Later expan-sions to the north re-placed a residence and the Doctor Green Clinic (now the parking lot next to the Studio).

It was a solid struc-ture, to say the least, framed in long steel span joists over a con-crete foundation with suspended floors and a roof of concrete poured over a galvanized steel form with five-ply tar and gravel laid over two inches of rigid insula-tion and vapour seal. Owned by the city of Cranbrook, of the 7,040 total sq. ft., 2,232 sq. ft. was leased to the RCMP, including offices, 16 jail cells (featuring cell bars

exist in the city hall jail space with some ease.

The B.C. Provincial Police took over from the city police force in 1931, during a time of a worrying degree in the increase of Cranbrook lawlessness. Not every-one was happy with the change but it occurred nonetheless. Over the next two decades both the town and the police force grew but the head-quarters and jail did not.

The B.C. Provincial Police force was official-ly disbanded in 1950, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police moved into town during August of that year. In truth, the RCMP had maintained a presence in the city for years previously, with the stationing of district officers in local residen-tial barracks. By 1953 the local detachment comprised five men in very cramped office quarters and prisoners bunked two to each small cell. The solution was obvious: a new building was required.

January, 1959, saw gardens; flowers, trees, hedges, grass, and a fountain; a nice little neighbourhood park maintained by the fire-men. The land would do quite nicely for a new police building. The present day Gyro Park on 7th Avenue and Cen-tral Park (now the site of the Cranbrook Mall parking lot) were both under construction at the time so perhaps it was felt that the loss of the green space would raise little notice which, publically at least,

from Oakalla prison), a “drunk tank”, wash-rooms, staff kitchen, matron’s room, a guard room, an interview room, a radio room, a records office and a maximum security space. A court room, witness room and mag-istrate’s office complet-ed the layout. The main floors were covered in vinyl and vinyl asbestos tile with each room in-dependently heated by steam from the city’s main heating plant to the rear of the fire hall.

Local sub-contrac-tors included Patmore Plumbing and Heating, Modern Electric, J. Ro-mich Drywall and Fred Cawte painting. By June it was apparent that there were some minor flaws that needed touching up: lighting in the cell blocks, reinforc-ing of railings, air-ciru-clation problems, win-dows that wouldn’t open, furniture casters damaging the floors, im-proper drainage in the women’s cell block and a very noisy courtroom.

In true 1960s fash-ion, the building, when complete, looked like a brick box with some unique steel bar exterior ornamental elements clinging to the windows that, if nothing else, said “We’ve got an institu-tion here, boys,” and gave the façade a rather foreboding appearance, which may well have been the point.

Further brick box ad-ditions over the years with additional steel bars draped around the windows have done lit-tle to change the origi-nal scheme. On the other hand, over the years the “non-decora-tive” steel bars within the building seem to have done the trick quite nicely.

Many Kimberley residents

are this month making one of their most important New Year’s resolutions ever.

They’re becoming Demen-tia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about de-mentia so they can be support-ive and inclusive toward peo-ple with the illness, which has become one of the country’s most pressing health issues. Statistics suggest three out of four area residents know someone living with dementia.

“People affected by demen-tia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can support them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them,” says Julie Cameron, First Link Helpline Coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. for the East Kootenay

region.“Through individual ac-

tions we can raise awareness of dementia and reduce the stigma attached to it.”

The Dementia Friend cam-paign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Cameron. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The next step is to understand five simple things about dementia:

* It is not a natural part of aging.

* It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicat-ing and doing everyday activi-ties.

* It is possible to live well with dementia.

* There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia.

* The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s East Kootenay branch is here to help people with de-mentia and their care partners.

That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Cameron adds.

The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initia-tives, First Link®, connects people affected by dementia with information, wSociety support services and programs such as Minds in Motion®, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey.

Kimberley residents can get more information by contact-ing the First Link® Dementia Helpline toll-free at 1-800-936-6033 Monday through Fri-day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Res-idents can also contact Julie Cameron at [email protected] and visit www.alz-heimerbc.org.

Cranbrook RCMP re-sponded to five motor vehicle accidents during the course of the day on January 5th, the most serious being a head on collision involving two vehicles.

At approximately 450 pm Cranbrook RCMP were called to a motor vehicle accident at the Off Ramp to Highway 95A. A Chevy Tracker heading Northbound lost control on the slip-pery highways and ca-reened head on into a southbound pickup

truck. Both occupants of the Tracker were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The occupants of the pickup truck were not injured. Cranbrook RCMP is continuing the investigation into this crash but road condi-tions appear to be the contributing factor.

The Cranbrook RCMP is reminding mo-torists that road condi-tions can change in an instant. Please leave yourself extra time to get where you need to go safely.

Local accommo-dations get behind new

hotel tax Arne Petryshen

Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Visitors staying in Cranbrook hotels could soon be paying three per cent more for their room.

At Monday night’s City Council meeting, the Cranbrook & Re-gion Tourism Society was seeking support for the additional hotel tax in order to help fund its work as the new Destination Mar-keting Organization (DMO).

The application is under the province’s Municipal and Region-al Tax Program. City staff estimated that the three per cent tax will generate somewhere around $450,000 annu-ally in support of the DMO business plan and marketing efforts.

Council approved the recommendation and put its support be-hind the application, and a letter of support

will be prepared to be signed by Mayor Lee Pratt on behalf of coun-cil.

City staff noted in the report for council that the provincial tax program is intended to significantly enhance funds available for such efforts through the additional hotel tax, and not to defray current investments in local tourism destina-tion marketing.

By supporting the application the city has committed to main-taining its current level of funding for tourism marketing of $30,000 a year over the five-year term that the Munici-pal and Regional Tax Program will apply.

The Destination Marketing Organiza-tion was established by the City of Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce as an industry-led, not-for-profit society. It was officially registered on Aug. 7, 2015.

At a meeting of the new DMO board in No-vember, they decided to pursue the addition-al hotel tax.

In order to apply to the Municipal and Re-gional Tax Program,

the board must show they have support of the accommodation sector for the tax. They need at least 51 per cent of the number of establishments that would collect the tax within the municipali-ty representing 51 per cent of the total num-ber of rooms.

Following that meeting, board direc-tors canvased the local accommodation sector and, as of Dec. 22, have signed support from 10 of the 18 accommoda-tion establishments that the tax levy would apply to. Those 10 es-tablishments make up 65.6 per cent of the rooms in town, with 581, out of a total of 885 rooms.

The establishments that have so far signed support : Prestige Rocky Mountain Re-sort, Best Western Inn Cranbrook, Days Inn Cranbrook, Heritage Inn, Kootenay Country Inn, Hospitality Court-yard Inn, Nomad Motel, The Baker Hotel, Elizabeth Lake Lodge and Heritage Es-tate Motel.

There are many ways all of us can help the KRRG. One of the most

important is just to champion the refugee cause in the community, Smith says. Be respectful, understanding and toler-ant while becoming a global citizen.

You can volunteer your time. Either helping with fundraising now, or volunteer time to help the new families feel comfortable in their new

homes when they arrive. They will need to find doctors and dentists, get health cards and other paperwork. They will need rides to grocery stores and English class-es.

Or you can volunteer cash. Cash donations are

L ech Walesa, a national hero 26 years ago for his role in ending Commu-nist rule in Poland as the leader of

Solidarity, has little political power in the country today, but he still has his voice. Last week he raised it, to condemn the new Pol-ish government that emerged from last Oc-tober’s election.

“This government acts against Poland, against our achievements, freedom, de-mocracy, not to mention the fact that it makes us look ridiculous to the rest of the world,” Walesa said. “I’m ashamed to travel abroad.”

Walesa said this on pri-vately-owned Radio Zet, be-cause Polish public service television and radio will no longer invite him to speak on any of their channels. The new government sees him as an enemy, and it now controls pub-lic broadcasting completely: all four chan-nels of TVP and the 200 stations of Polskie Radio.

It took them over in an operation that the European Parliament’s president, Mar-tin Schultz, described as having the “char-acteristics of a coup.” First the new Law and Justice Party (PiS) government packed the constitutional tribunal that might have stopped the media takeover, swearing in five new PiS appointees in the middle of the night. And then it used its parliamenta-ry majority to bring the public service media under party control.

The new Polish Culture Minister, Piotr Glinski, explained that it was necessary to “re-Polonise” Polish society — i.e. cleanse it of all the decadent Western European liberal notions and values that had infect-ed it under the rule of the outgoing Civic Platform government — and that the pub-lic broadcasters would therefore be re-des-ignated as “national cultural institutes.”

The head of PiS’s parliamentary caucus, Ryszard Terlecki, was even franker: “Over the past few weeks … we have had to deal

with the extremely unreliable work of the public media,” he said, referring to the media coverage of popular protests against the PiS’s attack on the constitutional tribu-nal. “If the media criticises our changes … we have to stop it.”

The PiS is the creation of Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his late twin brother Lech, who died in a plane crash at Smolensk in Russia in 2010. The brothers have always had a close political relationship with the Catholic Church in Poland, and the PiS

largely owes its recent electoral victory to the support of Poland’s very conservative Catholic bishops.

But it wasn’t all that sweeping a victory, really. The PiS got just over half the seats in the Sejm (par-

liament), which technically allows it to do almost anything it wants now that the con-stitutional tribunal has been crippled. But it won those seats on only 37 percent of the popular vote — and now that it has begun to put its agenda into action, recent opin-ion polls are giving it only 24 percent sup-port.

That doesn’t bother Jaroslaw Kaczynski in the slightest. He has the same knack as Donald Trump for saying nasty, untrue things and making them sound bold and incisive (to his target audience, at least) rather than just stupid and slimy.

For example, he recently warned Poles that Syrian refugees would bring diseases and parasites into the country. He contin-ues to speculate publicly that the crash that killed his twin brother was a plot (pre-sumably a Russian plot), despite the fact that two official Polish investigations have concluded that the cause of the crash was pilot error.

Even the poor, left-behind Poles who are Kaczynski’s target voters are some-times alarmed by his anger and his ex-tremism, so he wisely decided to let anoth-

er, virtually unknown party member, An-drzej Duda, run for the presidency last year.

Duda won, so Kaczynski repeated the strategy in October, promoting another relatively obscure and unthreatening party member, Beata Szydlo, as prime minister after the PiS’s victory in the parliamentary election. But most people suspect that he will quickly tire of working from the shad-ows and take her place as prime minister himself.

What has brought this deeply unat-tractive politician to power in Poland? It’s largely the same factors that have made Donald Trump a political phenomenon in the United States: an economy that is doing quite well overall — Poland’s econo-my grew by a third under Civic Platform in the past six years — but that has left a large chunk of the population behind.

It’s even the same chunk of the popula-tion that backs Trump in the US: older, more religious, less well educated, living in smaller cities and rural areas. Kaczynski’s victory therefore depends on a very narrow and fragile base, and he may well become more and more radical in his struggle to hold it together.

It is therefore going to be quite exciting in Poland for a while, and probably quite embarrassing for people like Lech Walesa. But it isn’t an anti-democratic revolution with real staying power.

Poles overwhelmingly want to remain part of NATO and the European Union, if only (in some cases) because they still fear Russia so much. You cannot go far down the road Kaczynski wants to travel without coming into serious conflict with the EU’s laws protecting civil and human rights – and when Poles have to choose between the EU and Kaczynski, they will not back Kaczynski.

For the townsman

M any Cranbrook resi-dents are this month making one of their

most important New Year’s reso-lutions ever.

They’re becoming Demen-tia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about de-mentia so they can be support-ive and inclusive toward people with the illness, which has be-come one of the country’s most pressing health issues. Statis-tics suggest three out of four area residents know someone living with dementia.

“People affected by demen-tia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can support them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them,” says Julie Cameron, First Link Helpline Coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. for the East Kootenay region.

“Through individual actions we can raise awareness of de-mentia and reduce the stigma attached to it.”

Cranbrook residents show support for important health issue by becoming Dementia Friends

The Dementia Friend cam-paign is the cornerstone of Alz-heimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Cameron. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The

next step is to understand five simple things about dementia:

• It is not a natural part of aging.

• It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicat-ing and doing everyday activi-ties.

• It is possible to live well with dementia.

• There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia.

• The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s East Kootenay branch is here to help people with de-mentia and their care partners.

That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Cameron adds.

The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link, connects people af-fected by dementia with infor-mation, Society support ser-vices and programs such as Minds in Motion, and demen-tia education sessions at any stage of the journey.

Cranbrook residents can get more information by contact-ing the First Link Dementia Helpline toll-free at 1-800-936-6033 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can also contact Julie Cameron at [email protected] and visit www.alzheimerbc.org.

dementia-friendLy actionshere are some tips to help you when you are con-

necting with a person living with dementia:• Patience is key for dementia-friendliness.• Use respectful language. People living with demen-

tia are not “sufferers” or “patients.”• Address the person with dementia, rather than

those around them, when talking about their experi-ence living with the disease.

• Connect, don’t correct. Respond to feelings being shared.

• Use precise language when describing actions or tasks.

• Give directions slowly and clearly.• Focus on a person’s strengths and share tasks with

them, like washing dishes or helping them to order at a coffee shop or restaurant.

• Become educated on dementia and on how to help, by visiting www.alzheimerbc.org.

T ed Striker — a former pilot suffering from PTSD — is forced to safely land a plane after the crew and half

the passengers are taken out by food poi-soning.

While many may recognize this as the plot from the 1980 blockbuster comedy ‘Airplane!,’ it is also the exact plot of Arthur Hailey’s first novel — 1958’s ‘Runway Ze-ro-Eight.’ Surprisingly, this is not where the people behind ‘Airplane!’ took their idea from.

Before he became one of the most successful novelists of the 20th cen-tury, Arthur Hailey — whose mega-hits include ‘Hotel,’ ‘Detective,’ and ‘Airport’ — was an avia-tion instructor during the Second World War, as well as a magazine editor. After the war he emigrated to Canada to work for the pub-lishing firm Maclean-Hunter. It was on his flight to Toronto that inspiration hit him, as he began to wonder what would hap-pen if the pilots were suddenly incapaci-tated by food poisoning. “Then,” he thought to himself, “it would fall to a rusty old wartime pilot like me to bring the plane down safely.”

Unsure he had enough of a story to fill a whole novel, he first wrote it up as a short play which he sold for $600 to a brand new entity — CBC Television. Only an hour long, the play was broadcast live on the evening of April 3rd, 1956. Two million

Canadians tuned in to watch, making it the most successful “teleplay” of the time. NBC purchased the story to televise their own version of it, as did the BBC.

The success of his story gave Hailey the confidence to expand it into a full-length novel, which he titled ‘Runway Zero-Eight.’ Yet before that hit the shelves in 1958, Par-amount Pictures turned it into a feature film called ‘Zero Hour!’

Although this was success enough for Hailey, this was the story that just kept on

giving. It soon appeared as the

1964 German film ‘Flug in Gefahr,’ then a Cze-koslovaian radio play ‘Let Do Nebezpecí’ and then again as a CBS movie of the week ‘Terror in the Sky.’

This brings us all the way to the mid-70s, and a struggling comedy troupe called the Kentucky Fried Theatre. Made up of two brothers (Jerry and David Zucker) and their friend (Jim Abrahams), the three performed satire on current events, somewhat in the vein of Saturday Night Live. For material, the three would record late night television on a cheap audio cassette recorder, and then write spoofs on whatever television commer-cials the recorder caught.

Between the commercials were late night movies, and one they had recorded immediately caught their attention: the 1957 film ‘Zero Hour!’ With no visuals, the dialogue sounded hilarious to the trio,

who decided that this material could make a successful comedy film.

To make their own screenplay work, the trio needed to lift the characters and dialogue verbatim from ‘Zero Hour!,’ so they purchased the rights to that film from Paramount. What was serious and dra-matic in 1958 was unintentionally hilari-ous in 1980, including that famous excla-mation mark after the title.

But before ‘Airplane!’ opened to sold out theatres, another version of Hailey’s original story appeared. Two kids in the eighth grade had used their parents’ Super 8 camera to film their own version of ‘Ter-ror in the Sky.’ This is only notable as the year before they had filmed their own version of ‘Jaws,’ which ended up being a film festival favourite.

The story of Ted Striker and a plane full of food poisoning may have reached its largest audience with ‘Airplane!,’ but it also ended there too. No one could ever take this scenario serious again, not without visions of Leslie Nielsen saying “and don’t call me Shirley.”

Arthur Hailey, the creator of these myr-iad productions, was spotted exiting a theatre with a huge grin on his face. He told reporters (who incorrectly but under-standably thought ‘Airplane!’ was spoofing his book ‘Airport.’ Right author, wrong book) “I laughed like everyone else.”

Ice face life after LukeFollowing trade of captain, life goes on for Kootenay Ice with Regina Pats in town Friday

Pouliot ready for opportunity with young IceKootenay newcomer excited for chance to take on bigger role in Cranbrook

Whittingham fails to report to Ice following

trade from ChiefsTaylor rocc a

For the second time this season, the Koote-nay Ice have been burned by a player re-fusing to report to Cran-brook.

Riley Whittingham, 20, acquired from the Spokane Chiefs Monday morning in a deal that sent 20-year-old Presten Kopeck south of the border, is not expected to report to the Koote-nay Ice after initially in-dicating he was excited for the opportunity.

“He has decided not to come [to Cranbrook] and he’s looking at all his options right now,” said Jeff Chynoweth, president and general manager of the Koote-nay Ice, Thursday after-noon. “It doesn’t look like the Kootenay Ice or the Western Hockey League is an option at this present time.”

Whittingham was ac-quired from the Chiefs along with a fourth-round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. Ac-cording to Chynoweth, Whittingham’s refusal to report will not impact the trade with Spokane, as there was protection written into the deal to cover circumstance such as this.

“When I talked to Riley on Monday, he was excited about coming and getting an opportu-nity for a more expanded role with our hockey club,” Chynoweth said. “But as the day pro-gressed and the week progressed, he’s had sec-ond thoughts. He is con-templating his future right now and looking at all options.”

In 34 games this sea-son with the Chiefs, Whittingham posted eight goals and 18 points. Over 228 career WHL games, all with Spokane, the 6-foot-2, 196-pound forward has registered 46 goals and 95 points.

“I’m not going to lose much sleep over it,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “I’m not really concerned with it. If [Whittingham] ends up, at some point, deciding to come, he’ll help us with our depth up front. If he’s not here, which is my feeling that he won’t be, it just gives the current group we have more opportunity

and more ice time. “We’re focusing on

trying to develop our young players and give them a chance to play. Having a 20-year-old here for a couple months really doesn’t help our project. It’s a win-win ei-ther way, in my opinion.”

Should status quo re-main, this leaves the Kootenay Ice carrying 22 players -- 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders -- head-ing into Sunday’s WHL trade deadline.

“I wasn’t counting on this and we’re at that magic number right now with 22 players,” Chynoweth said.

“We’re going to con-tinue to look right up until noon Sunday. If we can better our hockey club, we’ll definitely look at it.”

Whittingham’s refus-al to report to the Koote-nay Ice is not a new chal-lenge for Chynoweth.

Back on Nov. 26, Chynoweth brokered a deal to bring 18-year-old forward Johnny Wesley to Cranbrook from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a sev-enth-round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

After confirming Wesley’s willingness to report to the Ice, the deal was rubber-stamped and officially processed by the league. Before the day ended, Wesley had reconsidered his situa-tion and informed Chynoweth he was not going to report.

The deal was nullified by the WHL and Wesley, a native of Surrey, B.C., remained property of the Hurricanes only to be dealt Nov. 30 to the Van-couver Giants for an eighth-round pick in 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Kootenay Ice (7-31-3-0) will move on without the services of Whittingham as they host the Regina Pats (17-17-3-3) Friday night (7 p.m.) at Western Finan-cial Place.

While the Kootenay Ice had been without the on-ice services of cap-tain Luke Philp since Nov. 21, the 20-year-old was still around and now that he’s gone, a true and complete void exists.

“Luke, even though he wasn’t in our lineup, he was always around,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “He’s a leader, whether he’s dressed in your lineup or not.

“This now really opens the door for guys. We’ve seen improve-ments in that from Matt Alfaro and Zak Zbo-rosky. But we’ve got Tanner [Lishchynsky] and Hof [Wyatt Hoflin] here still that are a big part and were big parts of it from the beginning.

“We’ll go about nam-ing a captain next week. I’m pretty sure, in my mind, who that’s going to be, but we’ll get some more input from some of our players.”

Philp, of course, was shipped off to the Red Deer Rebels Sunday morning in a blockbust-er deal that brought a handful of assets to a re-building Ice franchise.

Zborosky, who has been sporting an alter-nate captain’s letter on his sweater, is certainly a candidate and when asked who needs to step

up with the former cap-tain no longer in the fold, the first finger he pointed was at himself.

“It’s a big impact. Luke [Philp] was our best player and our captain,” Zborosky said Thursday. “To see a guy go like that, it’s never easy. But we’ve got to move on from that. That’s how it works. It’s a business. We kind of thought it was going to happen, so we kind of prepared for it.

“I have to step up and guys like Alf and Lish, they have to step up, too. Even sec-ond-year guys, they can say a lot of things in the dressing room. But we’re going to miss [Philp]. He’s a fantastic leader. Everyone can

pitch in to fill that role and we should be okay.”

In their first outing without their captain, Zborosky and the Ice skated to a 3-1 win over the Swift Current Bron-cos this past Sunday.

With Zborosky’s hometown Regina Pats (17-17-3-3) visiting Cranbrook Friday, the hope is to build off a two-game Saskatchewan road trip that saw the Ice (7-31-3-0) claim three of a possible four points.

“This is only the sec-ond time playing them this year, so we don’t know much about them,” Zborosky said. “But they have a few guys that can score. We’ve got to shut down those guys and we’ve

got to continue to play how we’ve been playing the last couple games.”

Friday’s game marks the first on a six-game road trip for the Pats, who were thumped 7-3 by the Prince Albert Raiders last Sunday.

“We haven’t seen them in quite some time, but they’re a very aggressive group that plays with a lot of speed,” Pierce said. “They’re similar to us in that they’re young and they make some of the same mistakes that we do. We want to play the same way we played in Moose Jaw [4-3 OT loss Satur-

day], and to a lesser ex-tent, maybe in Swift Current-- a real uptem-po and competing.

“We’re not spending a ton of time focused on our opponent. It sounds funny because it’s Janu-ary and that’s usually when you start to dial into that stuff. But with new players, healthy bodies coming back -- guys that hadn’t been in our lineup for a while -- we’re still really focused on ourselves and making some subtle changes.”

Puck drop between the Ice and Pats is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Western Financial Place.

Taylor rocc aWith a big grin,

17-year-old Ryan Pouliot emerges from the Koote-nay Ice dressing room.

Having come to Cranbrook via the Luke Philp blockbuster deal with the Red Deer Reb-els, the native of North Vancouver is looking forward to a fresh start and the opportunity to build some special with his new team.

“I was excited -- this team is in a rebuild right now and I’m a younger guy,” Pouliot said prior to practice Thursday at Western Financial Place. “They told me, ‘You’re going to get more op-portunity here than in Red Deer.’”

The opportunity will

be there if the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Pouliot is willing to work for it and based on what he had to say Thursday, that shouldn’t be an issue.

“It’s pretty early to tell where exactly he will fit in with our group but he seems like a great kid, very respectful,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice.

“He’s going to get an opportunity to play. He’ll play [Friday] night for sure and between him, Jason Wenzel and Dallas Hines, it’s an opportuni-ty for someone in that group to really step up and take the bull by the horns, so to speak.

“I think he’s excited just to get a chance to

play.”A former 11th-round

selection (228th overall) of the Saskatoon Blades at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Pouliot is in his rookie campaign, having skated in 14 games with the Rebels prior to being traded to the Ice.

While a change of scenery can be refresh-ing, Pouliot elicited a good chuckle from members of the media when he talked about the adversity he’s faced in making the move to the East Kootenay.

“The biggest chal-lenge is probably the snow,” Pouliot said with a laugh, showing off his electric smile again.

The East Kootenay is

under heavy snowfall warning with 10 to 15 centimetres expected to hit the area over the course of the next 24 hours, but at least Pouliot made it to town before the storm rolled in so he could meet his new teammates and prepare for Friday’s tilt with the Regina Pats.

“Coming to a new team, you’ve got to meet everyone and it’s a little harder to adjust,” Pouliot said. “But this team has been really good, it’s been easy to adjust.”

With the Regina Pats visiting Cranbrook Fri-day night, Regina native and alternate captain Zak Zborosky made note of the arrival of Pouliot.

“He’s been fitting in fine, I see him around the dressing room talking with guys and joking around,” Zbo-rosky said. “He seems pretty calm on the ice. He doesn’t seem too nervous out there. I think he’s going to fit in fine.

“You just let him know that everyone’s his friend and we’re going to welcome him.”

The true welcome will come Friday when Pouliot, who is expected to don sweater No. 7, steps onto the ice for the first time as a member of his new club.

Puck drop between the Ice and Pats is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Western Financial Place.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Emphasize work and those in charge. You might feel a bit like a kid, as you’ll need to answer to others. Say yes, because there’s really no alternative. Pull back some. Be willing to assess these situations and make a decision accordingly. Tonight: A must appearance. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Reach out to someone who can help you sort through a situation. Not only is this per-son’s viewpoint very different, but his or her way of handling a problem is as well. If you are comfortable with this new perspective, try to work with it. Tonight: Try a new spot. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Deal with someone directly, and you will get better results. The ball might not be in your court, but there is no reason to think that you can’t deal with what is happening. You’ll come through at the last minute be-cause you can discipline your mind. Tonight: Do the unusual.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You understand feeling out of control, as you experience fre-quent mood changes. You will discover how important it is to change directions and move past a self-imposed restriction. Someone else demands con-trol, so let him or her have it. Tonight: Go along for the ride. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could be in the middle of a controversy and wish you weren’t. Go about your busi-ness, and refuse to get involved in an overassertive conversa-tion. Passions run high, even at home. Maintain a sense of humor, smile and allow others to let off steam. Tonight: Call it early. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Communication remains off when dealing with a child or family member. Try as you may, this person can’t seem to un-derstand your message. Resist judging him or her. Give up be-ing so critical, and try to walk in this person’s shoes. Tonight: Let off some steam. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Tension is high, and you might misread someone’s gesture. You can’t be sure enough of yourself right now. Try not to take any statement or misunderstanding personally. Get to the bottom of a problem through a non-de-fensive approach. Tonight: Play it easy, but curb spending. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You will pound on someone’s door in attempt to get his or her attention. When you want contact, you won’t rest until you have it. Your ability to come to terms with a problem needs to emerge. Consider pulling back some. Tonight: Hang out with a friend or loved one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Balance your checkbook before you walk out the door. You need that security more than you re-alize. Someone might make an offer, which, for some reason, could anger you. Rather than respond quickly, pull back and think. Tonight: Treat a friend to dinner and a movie. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might feel unusually en-ergized, as the New Moon is in

your sign. You radiate a certain amount of magic, which at-tracts others. Avoid a quarrel by using your magnetism. Do not underestimate your people skills. Tonight: Wherever you are is where others want to be. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might feel burdened, tired or simply not in the mood to hear a lot of comments and demands coming from others. If you can take the day off from the constant grind, you will be able to recharge your batteries. Tonight: Take some much-need-ed personal time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Keep in mind your expectations and where you are heading. You can do only so much, but today you have a better chance of achieving more of what you desire. Keep that fact in mind, even if you get into a squabble with someone at a distance. Tonight: Where the crowds are. BORN TODAY Singer Elvis Presley (1935), theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking (1942), singer/song-writer David Bowie (1947)

Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married for a long time. In the last couple of years, she has developed an incontinence problem. She seems not to be aware of how bad it is. She leaves rather fragrant underwear in the hamper, and the odor is horrible. If I bring up the subject, she gets very angry. She is in denial. I wish I could suggest to her what her options are, what products are available for this problem and to wash her underwear more thoroughly. The odor is so strong, guests coming into the house can smell it. Maybe she simply can’t tell how bad it is. What do you suggest I do? What do you suggest she do? This is a fairly urgent matter. Thank you. -- Embarrassed Dear Embarrassed: Your wife might be surprised to learn that incontinence affects more than 25 million people in the U.S., and most cases are treatable. There are different types of incontinence: Stress incontinence (leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh); urge incontinence (a sudden need to use the bathroom, usually due to other conditions, such as an infection); overflow incontinence (the bladder doesn’t completely empty when you use the toilet); functional incontinence (wherein a physical or mental impairment creates a problem, such as severe arthritis that makes it difficult to unzip fast enough); or mixed incontinence (more than one type). We know this is a sensitive subject, but you absolutely must speak to your wife about it. She would be mortified to realize that others notice the odor. She might be more willing to address it with her doctor if you tell her that incontinence can indicate a more serious underlying medical condition. And she might be reassured to know that she might be able to control the problem through medication and/or pelvic exercises. For information, you both can contact the National Association for Continence at nafc.org Dear Annie: My wife and I are elderly and no longer enjoy things like fancy candies and fruit. We have tried to subtly let family and friends know this, but they persist, on frequent occasions, in sending us expensive edibles from elegant places, which we then regift to others. (This isn’t easy, as most of our friends are also elderly and won’t enjoy the epicurean treats.) We feel that, to be polite, we must thank the givers. But the truth is, we would much prefer that they use the money to make a donation to charity. Is there a polite way for us to tell them this without appearing to be rude and ungrateful? -- Anonymous Dear Anonymous: We suspect these people are trying to be kind and don’t know what else to get you. You must thank them for thinking of you. But when an occasion is coming up where you know they are likely to send you such things, inform them in advance that you no longer eat candy or fancy fruits. Say that you are making a concerted effort to do more good in your lives, and if they insist on honoring you, a gift to such-and-such charity would mean the world to you. With so many advertising mediumsdividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching

consumers. Why?Simply put, newspapers reach morepeople, more often. Highly portableand highly visible, newspaper ads go

with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely

to be on their minds when they’re inthe market for related products or

services. When it comes to spendingyour advertising dollars, make the

choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

It’s our world now.International scien-

tists, including one Ca-nadian, say that humans have changed the Earth so much that it’s time to recognize we have cre-ated a new era in the planet’s history.

“The case is pretty strong,” said Alex Wolfe, a University of Alberta paleobiologist and one of 24 co-authors of a paper published Thurs-day in the journal Sci-ence that argues for offi-

cial designation of the Anthropocene Epoch.

The term Anthropo-cene - meaning “human period” - has been used for about 15 years when-ever scientists want to talk about the cumula-tive impacts people have had on Earth.

Some suggest it should start with the birth of agriculture. Oth-ers argue it begins with the Industrial Revolu-tion. And some say our impacts just don’t justify a separate epoch.

Wolfe and three

dozen colleagues from around the world were tasked in 2009 by an in-ternational commission to find out if the Anthro-pocene is real and, if so, when it started.

Yes, they say. It began July 16, 1945.

That’s the date of the first nuclear test explo-sion in Alamogordo, N.M. It’s also set off what’s come to be called the Great Acceleration - the post-war explosion of energy use, resource exploitation and popu-lation growth that is

now visible everywhere on the planet.

The paper says that along with radioactive traces from nuclear tests, new materials such as plastic and pure aluminum have become pervasive in the envi-ronment. Old materials such as concrete have spread wildly - over half the concrete produced since the time of the Ro-mans comes from the last 20 years.

“Now we have rocks that are laden with mi-croplastics and mac-

roplastics and elevated inventories of trace ele-ments and human waste products,” Wolfe said.

More than half the Earth’s surface has been modified for human use. People have dug up, tunnelled through or otherwise moved enough dirt and rock to cover the entire planet - including the oceans - with a kilogram of mate-rial for every square metre.

“Humans now move as much earth materials as the sum of volcanoes,

(earthquakes) and land-slides,” said Wolfe.

Soot and ash, visible in sediments since the Industrial Revolution, became even more prevalent during the Ac-celeration. Global car-bon, nitrogen and phos-phorus cycles have all altered.

Extinction rates of mammals, birds, rep-tiles, amphibians and fish began growing in the 19th century. If cur-rent trends continue, scientists expect about three-quarters of all

species to disappear over the next few centu-ries in “a process that is probably already under-way,” says the paper.

That would be the sixth great extinction since life began on Earth, akin to the disap-pearance of the dino-saurs.

Meanwhile, sea lev-els began to rise be-tween 1905 and 1945. Climate warming has exceeded levels of natu-ral variability. Rates of change have been in-creasing since 1970.

Scientists say new era in Earth’s history needs recognition
