Changes in last 40 years, according to Dr. Kimmel

Gender mattersWork place changesFamily and workplace balanceSexuality

men

OR

gender Doesn’t affect men Limits work rarely Sexual roles

30 years ago at San Diego State, a women’s Studies program began

Women , a concern Limits work Sexual roles

The work place Women have

increased role in Medicine

Dental med. Law

Only 20% of us had Grandmothers who worked in a “career”

Shared balance of family and work between sexes Now---------still a work in progress

Then ---------no way!

Sexuality Sexual revolution gave men less

commitment & more partners Moral values changed Birth control changed Very little changed in terms of

women’s sexual benefits

Example on sexuality 1954 Dr. Kinsey found only a small

number of women masturbated ( or claimed so!)

1994 = 91%

Another example Among working

class women in 1975

40% faked orgasm 1975

Among same group

10% 1997

Times have changed

Expectations have changed

REALLY?

What has changed with men Less all male jobs and careers Less all male colleges male dominated areas in society-

rare

Men still adhere to 4 basic rules

No sissy stuff

Be a big wheel

Be a sturdy oak

Give ‘em hell

Bring the sexes togetherFemale area 1 Gender- no problem for us

Inherent privilege(Like racial issues)

Female area 2 Workplace hostile? Not really –we had “entitlement”

Female area 3 Men train to be oaks, ill equipped for family commitment

Female area 4 Sexuality: give ‘em hell is not very “sexy”

Female area 3(work and family balance) men’s tasks have not aidedTaking out garbage (weekly task)-----men

Snow clearing (weekly task)------men

Bed making ( daily) you guess!

Cleaning (daily) you guess!Cooking ………..mostly women

Sexuality:area 4 men women

Men: sex may be a compete issue and aggressive

affection

dominance equality

Shirk sexual responsibility Pregnancy, reputation

RiskSpontaneous and promiscuous

Comfort and safetyMeaningful??

Male and female issues Biological variation

Gender schools of thought

Intimacy issues

Society is continually evolving

Biology:some differences between same sex members are >than between sexes

Aggression: due to relative Testosterone levels

not an absolute variation

Physical strength : same

Society overemphasizes femininity (accommodating, compliant, submissive and unequal)

Math vs. Verbal Ability:evolutionary theory

Brain Differences

Limbic system more developed in maleSpeed and response

Connecting fibers between hemispheresLarger in females

Male develops slower than female

Certain brain areas vary between sexesSexually Dimorphic Nucleus =larger in male

Male brain

And………..

Variations

Lead to male action orientation, lateralization, immaturity and ? Language use

Schools of thought on gender Freud– gender a function of family

and sex Cognitive theorists– child develops

and sifts thru gender hints Feminist theory: boys dominate

girls submissive

Intimacy among men

Competition-do not share vulnerabilityMen do action oriented activity for bonding.

In control ( a male need)

Homophobia ( limits affection)

Poor social skills for intimacySide to side intimacy & not face to faceFriendships shrink with age loneliness

Intimacy with women

Friend ship with women should be not only sexual

Sex becomes loveless and novelty oriented

Spreading of genes: contraception, internet, adult films dehumanize sex

Non relational sex

Male Female

Explicit non attached relationship

Phallocentric whole being

Double standard Fantasy

Promiscuous less so

Perhaps evolutionary demands lead to men

forming separate identity

Separate from momIndependentStrongNot affectionateNot dependent

We are sexy bitches

Evolution of society Gap has shrunken in work, play,

family, sex Early sexual debut, contraception

and education have helped, as well as feminism and law

Sexual dimorphism and polygamy These don’t benefit modern evolving man. Male/female size difference now 17%

( 300,000 years ago was 50%) Monogamy may benefit males that live far

beyond breeding age—70s, 80s 12% of primates are monogamous Grandchildren benefit from pair bonding
