COLLECTING

It can be an intimidating prospect. With so much information on watches swirling about, the thought of starting a watch col-lection might leave your head spinning. We turned to one of South Florida’s premiere experts, Jono King, director of sales at King Jewelers and an avid collector himself, and asked for his best tips for where to begin.

King Jewelers’ Jono King, one of the watch world’s reigning experts, offers advice on the best way to begin a collection.

Page 11: King Jewelers Magazine

| P AGE ELEVEN |

IS THERE A BENEFIT TO BUYING PRE-OWNED?

There is such a watch craze that there are a lot of pre-owned pieces on the market. Some collectors love to have the newest and greatest, so they trade out of other watches to buy the new ones. Depending on the outlet, there is a great opportunity to get fantastic watches on the pre-owned market.

WHAT ARE THINGS PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR, WHETHER BUYING NEW OR PRE-OWNED?

I can’t tell you the number of times we have seen people buy counterfeit or stolen watches without knowing it. One of our clients brings in the Officine Panerais that he buys on the Internet, and every single one he has brought in has been a fake. The bigger the brand, the more counterfeits there are. You have to know who you are buying from. I always suggest you deal with an au-thorized dealer. And if you are a novice, you should never buy sight unseen.

SO WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE WATCHES WITH WHICH TO START A COLLECTION?

Abraham-Louis Breguet was one of the founding fathers of the watch indus-try, so every watch collection should feature at least one watch from Breguet. Harry Winston is known for doing things differently, like the Project Z6 Black Edition with an alarm movement. The Chopard Mille Miglia is a fine, versatile sports watch. I’m a big fan of Zenith; their pilot collection is a great entry point, and the El Primero Stratos Striking 10 is a great watch to begin with. And lastly, the Girard-Perregaux Hawk Chronograph is an iconic sport watch and great-looking.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START COLLECTING WATCHES?

A lot of people tend to gravitate to brands that have a rich history. They can look back at 100 or 150 years of collections and the evolution of the watches. It’s nice for people to start off with a brand that is well known, that is writ-ten about, that there is a lot of information about to help people make their choice. You should do your research online and in the magazines. Start off with an established brand that has a wide variety of offerings. Then, you can expand your collection by buying watches that catch your eye.

WHAT SHOULD YOUR FIRST WATCH BE?

The first piece should be something versatile, something you can wear at work, on the weekends, on vacation, something suited for any or every oc-casion. Then, once you own this, you can expand to a sports watch or a dress timepiece.

SHOULD PEOPLE BUY NEW WATCHES OR PRE-OWNED?

I would suggest that people start off with a new watch, because you have a man-ufacturer’s warranty and a sense of comfort and security. The introduction to watches has to be a positive experience. If you are buying pre-owned, you don’t know where it came from. We do carry some preowned, but the vast majority of these pieces were sold new from this store.

The King family opened the Nashville salon in November 2008 and today is the sec-ond store for the legacy that dates back to 1912. Fifth-generation owned and oper-ated, King Jeweler’s Nashville has quickly emerged as the luxury destination of the

Central South. Modern and inviting, the store is outfitted with European-style, shop-in-shop boutiques and comfortable seating for a relaxed shopping experience. The Nashville salon is equipped with a large bar for entertaining, a private viewing room, and a desig-nated custom design area for one-of-a-kind engagement rings. Even the jewelry and watch repair divisions are designed to be open and interactive as to give the clients confidence with a feeling of belonging and involvement.

King Jeweler’s Nashville offers exquisite diamonds, fine jewelry, Italian fashion, luxury Swiss timepieces, and our in-house KJ5 collection. From the millennial bride to the sophis-ticated fashionista, the salon features an impressive selection of certified loose diamonds and leading bridal designers such as Forevermark, Scott Kay, Ritani, Penny Previelle, Preci-sion Set, and Furrer-Jaquot. The fine jewelry collections include Mikimoto, Ippolita, Marco Bicego, Roberto Coin, and Kwiat. In addition, the Nashville store is an authorized retailer for more than twenty Swiss watch brands and has become the timepiece destination for the region.

As the preeminent destination across Middle Tennessee for people in search of signif-icant timepieces and jewels, the store services an elite clientele of musicians, prominent actors, and professional athletes. Among the most notable personalities are Taylor Swift, Gene Simmons, Kings of Leon, the Black Keys, Hunter Hayes and Luke Bryan, just to name a few.

According to David King, “Our Nashville salon caters to a luxury lifestyle with a strong focus on certified loose diamonds, fine diamond and colored gemstone jewelry, and Swiss timepieces. Education and integrity are very important to our staff so we strive to provide an informative experience with expert guidance steeped in first-class service. This is what has made our family business special for more than 100 years and we’re proud to have become an integral part of the Nashville community in such a short amount of time. We really have a fantastic team here and Nashville is just an amazing place to live. The people are so friendly and there are so many fun activities that are always going on. We’re just thankful to be a part of this special city.”

Since opening the store, King Jewelers has been very active in the community. This past year alone, King Jewelers supported the Nashville Symphony’s Spring Fashion Show, Chuk-kers for Charity, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. King Jewelers is also the official jeweler of the Nashville Predators (NHL) and proud sponsor of Bridgestone Arena.

TIMEChanel combines high watchmaking

with haute coutureB Y C A R O L B E S L E R

As one of the world’s most recognizable brands, especially in the world of haute couture, it is no surprise that as a watch-maker, Chanel has also made a name for itself as a master of haute horology. The company has achieved this by adhering to the same standards that dictate haute couture: to be made from the high-est quality materials, with extreme attention to detail, finish and hand craftsmanship. Chanel takes as much pride in its fashion roots as it does in its watchmaking capabilities, something that gives it an edge over other elite watch brands. The new Premiére timepiece, launched at this year’s Baselworld fair, is a perfect example of this brand strength. It pays homage to one of Chanel’s most iconic acces-sories — the handbag with a chain-link strap. The bracelet of the timepiece is made of intertwined leather and steel links. The watch was featured on the runway of Chanel’s Fall/Winter Ready-to-wear shows this spring. The black lacquered dial is the defini-tion of chic minimalism. There is also a gold version, without the leather element in the link bracelet.

The J12 Chromatic with beige gold

The Premiére has a long history at Chanel. It was the first watch created exclusively for women, back in 1987, with a case inspired by the octagonal shape of the Chanel No. 5 bottle stopper. A new tourbillon model introduced this year is set with 42 baguette diamonds on the bezel, 47 baguette cut pink sapphires on the case side, baguette cut pink sapphires on the crown, and round diamonds on both the hands and tourbillon cage. The dial is high-tech ceramic. The brand’s most iconic timepiece, the J12, was introduced this year in a stunning all-white version with light blue numer-als and hand tips, one of the most feminine variations on this multi-version model. There is also a new “beige gold” application on the J12, a special alloy of gold that matches a color used throughout the brand’s fashion and accessory collections, including a beige face powder, as well as one of the colors in its iconic tweed jackets.

THE KWIAT COBBLESTONE COLLECTION

F. Rubel 9.2014.indd 1 9/9/14 2:28 PM

Our family has had the pleasure of working with several founders of HYT over the years during which time many great conversations regarding the future of haute horology were

had. With the creation of HYT, we have all been blown away as the future has truly arrived. That being said, what was the inspiration behind the H1 and HYDRO ME-CHANICAL HOROLOGISTS?

We always wanted to combine things that are not supposed to live together. Liquid has always been the enemy of the mechan-ical device in a watch, so combining them is a huge challenge, a complete disruption in the watch industry. HYT generates huge amount of attention on our H1 product, which is exactly what we wanted!

At HYT we have a very simple vision : LIQUID + MECHAN-ICS. Everybody understands it.

During the R&D and manufacturing of the H1 collection, what were the greatest challenges and obstacles that you faced?

So many! The fluidic system in our HYT watches is really very complex. Extreme alchemists, HYT’s Hydro-Mechanical Horolo-gists, we have turned utopia into reality –mixing mechanics and liquid within a wristwatch. While truly addicted to non-conform-ism, we have drawn upon the strictest codes in Fine Watchmaking – and felt entirely free to shatter them!

By achieving the incredible challenge of indicating the time with water, we have not so much propelled a new UFO into the watchmaking stratosphere, as we have in fact pulverized all cer-tainties by uniting two worlds that are supposedly diametrically opposed. Never since the water clocks of the pharaohs, have the laws of gravity been overcome to transpose this energy in a porta-ble watch. HYT has done it.

The leitmotif? Fluid mechanics, or the ultimate in hybrid tech-nology. The formula? Avantgarde watchmaking developments, en-gineering pushed to its heights, high-tech materials, and a design that generates genuine emotions.

The H1 and H2. Pieces of Fine Watchmaking that single-hand-edly epitomize the brand’s identity: an obsession with innovation, uncompromising execution and an intransigent approach to qual-ity. The products are quite clearly the consistent core concern for HYT. A “time object” that provides intuitive readings, well off the beaten track. High-flying mechanics that bear testimony to a completely new approach. Bold architecture, leaving nothing to chance. Each element is wisely thought-through, and

patiently built. Inspired and rebellious, the design imposes its codes, emphasising the exceptional temperament and creativity of the overall result. An authentic innovation incubator, HYT’s hy-dro-mechanical engineering lab of genius continues its quest for the absolute in the realm of hybrid development. The H1 takes it resolutely into the legend of Fine Watchmaking 2.0.

Where do you foresee HYT’s position in the luxury Swiss watch market in five years?

Willing to remain unconventional, surprising, innovative. A ref-erence within the independent Watchmakers with a substantial-business platform, willing to grow.

So if you happened to be wearing an HYT H1 Azo on your wrist in Miami Beach, which is one of my favorite personal pieces from the collection, what would be your luxury sport car of choice to accompany the watch?

Porsch 918 Spyder. Look at the tyros… the green breaks :))))

One last question… if you could have dinner with any-one in history, who would you dine with and where?

Winston Churchill. A visionary man, the man who changed ev-erything on June 6, 1944… In my home ! :)))

Vail, Aspen, and, Breckenridge

COLORADO

Page 25: King Jewelers Magazine

COLORADO is known around the world as a haven for powder hounds searching for the next

big thrill. And even though the skiing is amazing, there is more to the Rocky Mountain state than

just the frozen slopes. Here are three top destinations that offer a full range of luxurious après ski

activities and amenities…and yes, some of the most wicked rides on two rails.

At Vail, the experience extends far beyond the mountain. Vail is linked by three lively base areas filled with shops, world class restau-

rants, bars, and apres hot spots. Linked by pedestrian friendly heated streets, the village is a perfect place for a family stroll after skiing or a bar-hopping night out on the town. The countries largest free transportation system runs frequently, making it easy to access al-most anywhere in the Vail area without touching your car. It’s almost like the whole town is “ski in, ski out.”

Vail is generally separated into a few distinct areas. The main two base areas, where most restaurants and shops are located, are Vail Village, and Lionshead. Golden Peak is near Vail Village and also offers access to the mountain as well as a beginner ski school area and lift.

Right off the mountain, just steps from the lifts, Vail Village offers guests all types of fun, day and night. Everything you could ever want in a vacation is right here. Linked by a short free in-town bus ride, Lion-shead and Vail Village are the lively centers, where

most skiers and snowboarders head to and from the mountain during the day. The streets fill with pedes-trians shopping, talking, heading to dinner, and out to the nightlife options after dark.

Vacationing in the mountains does not mean giving up five-star cuisine the likes of which you would find in many metropolitan centers. On the contrary, you can find some of the most delectable food imaginable in Vail Village. Make reservations at  Elway’s, Mat-suhisa, Sweet Basil, Flame, and countless other highly acclaimed restaurants for some truly stunning dining experiences.

In the late 1940s, skiing arrived in Aspen as did modern day founders Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke. With a vision for the community that focused on mind, body and spirit, the Paepckes helped Aspen begin a civic and cultural renaissance —

one that continues to this day. Locals call it “The Aspen Idea.” That idea drives the internal energy of Aspen. Forget what you think you know about the mountain town and come and experience “The Aspen Idea” for yourself. Enjoy a day on the mountain in the winter or a bike ride along the Rio Grande Trail in the summer. Fantastic food, incredible environment, and great people...that’s what Aspen is all about.

Aspen is a world-class destination with outdoor adventures from skiing to biking. It has a flair for arts and culture, but still maintains enough small-town charm for year round residents to call it home. Aspen truly is a unique diamond nestled in the rough of the Rocky Mountains that has a knack for bringing big city features to you in a way that defies ordinary.

Aspen’s dining scene is always evolving. In 2014, the town welcomed the David Burke Kitchen, Insider, and HOPS. Also, Whole Journeys, a division of Whole Foods, has launched a new destination in Aspen, with three-day culinary and hiking trips.

First, there’s the snow. It wouldn’t be a ski town if it weren’t for the skiing, and there would be no skiing without plenty of snow. Nestled in the shadow of the TenMile Range and several fourteeners (14,000

foot peaks in the heart of the Rockies), Breckenridge reaps big meteoro-logical benefits. Weather systems scale up the peaks, gaining strength and moisture before they let loose over Breckenridge.

Everyone loves to celebrate after a successful day on the slopes, and in Breckenridge awesome après are everywhere. Freeskier magazine recently hosted its Sweet 16 Party in Breckenridge, and Ski Magazine has consistently named the resort as having one of the best après scenes in the country.

For an 1850s mining town, Breckenridge has a lot to offer in 21st cen-tury cuisine. Visitors rave as much about the pub food as they do the upscale, four-star menus. Thanks in part to its dining options, Breckenridge earned

a spot on Outside magazine’s list of North America’s Best Resorts. Brecken-ridge is perfect for a romantic get-away, with its offerings of intimate dining options, private luxury lodging, and plenty of places to mingle. In fact, the Ski Channel gave it high honors in their list of the Top Ten Ski Towns for Singles.

Breckenridge has epic town festivals all year round. You’ll find a nev-er-ending stream of events, including film festivals, art exhibits, con-certs, dancing, legendary spas, and shopping galore. The town also offers museums, coffee shops, bike paths, and outdoor play areas for all ages. There’s something going on almost every week in Breckenridge, from the bi-annual Breckenridge Beer Festival to a snow sculpture contest, music, bike festivals, and the annual Ullr Fest, paying homage to the God of Win-ter with parties and a parade

Consumers searching for special pieces unique to them are finding that jewels from the past deliver in design, craftsmanship, in-vestment value and personal meaning.

The market for antique and estate jewelry is robust, with demand strong in very rare, high-end pieces, gem quality pearls and colored stones as well as fine signed jewels from top houses like Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Boucheron, Lalique and Harry Winston. There is also a growing movement among brides and grooms to make their “some-thing old” a wedding or engagement ring from the past.

Previously owned jewelry doesn’t always imply signed pieces from elite jewelry houses, though. It is also possible to find affordable, mean-ingful alternatives to auction pieces. And many pre-owned finds are unique, with elements such as old mine cuts, romantic filigree designs and period style characteristics, making them stand apart from more modern pieces. There is also a lot of interest in recycling today, which appeals to buyers of estate jewelry.

Art Deco, nearly 100 years old now, remains the most en-during design period in estate jewelry, a market favorite for its timeless on-trend qualities. Recognized for its mix of bold colors, geometric forms and di-

verse materials, Deco style is modern and easy to wear. Diamonds were very popular in the period, often with rubies, sapphires and emeralds, and the use of black onyx contrasted with white diamonds and rock crystal is a defining characteristic. While the period covers the early 1920s to mid 1930s, its influ-ence extends through the ’50s and ’60s, and into current day.

Cartier, Tiffany and Van Cleef & Arpels are considered to have created some of their most iconic work during the Art Deco period. But the buzz in estate circles is that the works of Suzanne Belperron are destined to be a collector’s favorite. Ahead of her time, Belperron was among the most rev-olutionary designers of the 20th century. A head designer at Maison René Boivin (1919-1932), her unsigned designs diverged from conventional Art Deco style in gold and semi-precious stones as opposed to platinum and di-amonds. She gained increasing notoriety after a May 2012 Sotheby’s Geneva sale of her own personal collection.

Jewelry from the 1940s, especially big chunky bracelets in yellow and pink gold, with sprinkles of diamonds, or necklaces with gems and enamel are spot on trend. Moreover, there’s a resurgence in brooches that also serve as pendants and hairpieces. In fact, head ornaments like tiaras and bejeweled headbands are very much in fashion. Likewise, cameos from all eras, some carved out of gems like layered agate and jasper, are back in vogue, especially in pendants and rings.

But the real sizzle, many say, is in mid-century modern, particularly the 1960-’70s, as more goods are available from this time than in earlier periods, offering some amazing finds. Especially popular are wildlife and nature pat-terns, something that gained a following in the 1960s among major houses like David Webb, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels.

People who hunt for estate and antique jewelry are drawn by the thrill of the chase. You never know what your treasure-hunting dealer or retailer has uncovered in the dusty jewelry boxes of previous owners who, for one reason or another, want to sell their pieces – it’s always something different, always a surprise. Imagine channeling your inner Marilyn Monroe, wearing an amaz-ing 1959 diamond floral necklace by Harry Winston! Collectors of estate jewelry relish in the artistry, history and beauty of what they may discover.

STOP SMOKINGIt is no secret that smoking is bad for you. Although you are probably aware of the

severe health problems that are associated with cigarettes, you should also know that they can greatly contribute to the appearance of aging. The smoke itself damages the substances that are responsible for your skin’s elasticity. Years of exposure will cause your skin to become loose and wrinkled. The chemicals in cigarettes will also contribute to the appearance of aging by hindering healthy cell reproduction.

DIET Aging happens due to the gradual wearing down of the cells in your body, much of which

is due to the presence of free radicals, which we are constantly exposed to in the environment. Although you cannot fully prevent yourself from being exposed to free radicals, you can minimize their effects through diet. You should eat foods that are high in antioxidants in order to neutralize the free radicals in your body. Antioxidants can generally be found in healthy fruits and vegetables.

PREVENT SUN DAMAGE Another major cause of aged skin is damage from the sun. Fortunately, you don’t have to

hide indoors to stay looking young. You can prevent sun damage by applying a sun block with a rating of at least SPF 15 – SPF 30 is usually sufficient. Be sure to apply sunblock even during the winter months, as you are still being exposed to UV radiation. You should also avoid tanning at all costs, naturally or in a tanning booth

MOBILITY TRAINING Postural issues are one of the biggest indicators of aging. They are also the cause of much of

the chronic pain that we experience as we age. However, posture correction isn’t a mere matter of standing up straight. Your posture is determined by the strength of various muscles. If you allow these muscles to become weak, bad posture will result. Pilates, yoga, and weight training are all great ways to prevent and correct these issues. The help of a personal trainer or physician who is knowledgeable about issues related to mobility and posture can be a great help.

STRESS REDUCTION Your state of mind has a big effect on your health. Stress has been shown to negatively

affect the life span of your body’s cells, which can cause a number of health issues. It can also cause your skin to age more quickly. Although reducing stress is easier said than done, you should try your best to relax, minimize situations that you know will be stressful, and practice dealing with stress in a productive manner.

Although there is no secret that will grant eternal youth, good habits and a healthy lifestyle will diminish and sometimes reverse the aging process.

to prevent and reverse agingHumans have always been obsessed with maintaining their youth. Although there is no way to stay young forever, here are some tricks and lifestyle changes that will help you prevent and possibly even reverse the appearance of aging.

A s with any wine, the temperature at which you serve pinot noir is key to perceiving the numerous and subtle flavors. Serving a glass at the right tempera-ture will enable you and your guests to experience

everything the wine has to offer.First of all, a little background is in order. A pinot noir wine

starts with pinot noir grapes, which are grown all over the world. The most famous pinot noirs are grown in France’s Burgundy region, but many other wonderful varieties come from Califor-nia and Canada. Interesting tidbit: A champagne is produced by blending chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. Pinot Noir’s dark-ened reddish color comes from the process used to produce the wine, where the clear pinot noir juice is left touching the dark grape skins.

What flavors should you expect from a properly served glass of pinot noir? After all, the primary reason to be mindful of serving temperatures is the subtle flavoring of the wine. Though pinot noir’s notes do vary from region to region, there are nevertheless a few common flavors you can expect to find in a well-served glass: smoke, black cherry, mushroom, leather, plum, tomato, berries, and earth. A well-served pinot noir will also have a rich, velvety, soft, and full to medium-bodied quality.

And what about serving temperature? Finding the best tempera-ture to store and serve pinot noir involves a delicate balancing act. Do it right and you will preserve all the above-listed characteristics perfectly. Your wine will stay a beautiful balance of fruit, alcohol, and acidity that reveals the subtle nuances of flavor.

Serving temperature does not change these characteristics, contrary to popular belief. Temperature affects the degree to which your palate can interpret them. Pinot noir is best served at slightly below what most consider room temperature. It is a myth that red wines are room-temperature wines. Room temperature is too warm. Lighter-bodied red wines like pinot noir should be served around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, or 12.8 degrees Celsius. As you serve the wine, be careful to hold the glass correctly. Hold the stem of the glass such that your hand does not warm the wine as you pour and as you lift the glass to your lips. If you’re drinking with stemless glasses, only pick up the glass when you’re planning to take a sip.

It can be helpful to store bottles of pinot noir in a basement or refrigerator to help them last longer. Storing bottles at room

temperature means you have to cool them down prior to serving, typically by leaving them in the refrigerator for two hours. Don’t cool them down too far or you’ll miss more subtle aspects of the wine.

Storing the wine in an area that’s too warm, on the other hand, can actually affect the wine’s flavor profile. If you store a pinot noir, or any wine, in a place where it will be too warm for a long period, the wine can age prematurely, or the flavor may break down. The same goes for storing the wine at temperatures that are too cold. The best temperature for storing red wines, like pinot noir, is the same temperature at which they are best served.

A.-L. BREGUET’S INVENTION OF THE TOURBILLON

REVOLUTIONIZED THE ART OF WATCHMAKING IN 1801 AND

SET A NEW STANDARD FOR TIMEKEEPING.

For centuries, scientists and philos-ophers had used the term Tourbil-lon to refer to the regular rotation of planets around the sun, despite the word Tourbillon, or whirlwind, being somewhat of a misnomer for

the ordered regularity of the universe. Like as-tronomy, watchmaking has precise and structured systems, so it was unsurprising that A.-L. Breguet borrowed the term to name one of the most sig-nificant advances in the industry’s history. In fact, Breguet had created his own little whirlwind, a mechanism that “shook up” the ordered compo-nents in a watch to ensure perfect timing. Before Breguet’s invention of the Tourbillon, timepieces were notoriously inaccurate.

Gravity negatively influenced their regularity by altering the rate every time a watch changed position. Well schooled in science and mathematics, Breg-uet was determined to find a solution. Where other watchmakers had failed, Breguet turned theory upside down; deciding that if he couldn’t fight gravity, he would work with it. He realized that if he could fit the various components of the escapement (the balance wheel, lever and escape wheel – the parts most

susceptible to gravity) inside a mobile carriage that could then complete a full rotation, the device would eliminate rate defects by having them effectively neutralize each other. In essence, his invention cancelled the negative effects of gravity.

Recognizing that watches could now run with far greater accuracy, in 1801 Breguet applied to the French government for a patent in the following terms: “I have the honor of conveying to you a note containing details of a new inven-tion which can be used with timepieces”. The Paris authorities swiftly granted him a 10-year patent. So challenging were the mechanical skills involved that when the patent expired, only the very best watchmakers were able to con-struct the Tourbillon.

Breguet’s power of invention completely changed the nature of watchmak-ing and the Tourbillon was undoubtedly a measure of his genius. However, the Tourbillon mechanism was not an isolated breakthrough. Breguet had a long list of developments to his credit, including the perpetual or self-winding watch, the gong spring for minute repeaters, a shockproof suspension device, the precursor of today’s chronograph, and a new overcoil spiral that is still used today in most mechanical watches.

The Tourbillon regulator still manages to fascinate and remains the pinnacle of watchmaking achievement. It made its way into wristwatches at the turn of the 20th century and gained incredible popularity in the 1980s alongside a renaissance of mechanical timekeeping led by Breguet.

F ine watchmaking at Harry Winston honors Mr. Winston’s legacy of creativity and innovation, by developing time-pieces that complement the extraordinary design and craftsmanship of the House’s legendary jewels.

Launched in 1989, Harry Winston’s debut timepiece collection, the Premier Collection, helped revolutionize mechanical watchmaking with the introduction of the

world’s first Biretrograde Perpetural Calendar. This focus on innovation helped to propel the House to the forefront of fine watchmaking and set the precedent for many groundbreaking complications, including the His-toire de Tourbillon, a masterpiece dedicated to one of the most complex horological complications, and the Opus Series, which continues to revo-lutionize the art of telling time.

Continuing its commitment to creativity and cutting innovation, in 2004, Harry Winston introduced fine watchmaking to a revolutionary new mate-rial known as Zalium. Far scarcer and stronger than titanium, and known for its extreme durability, corrosion-resistance, and non-allergenic proper-ties the zirconium-based alloy is used in the development of the Project Z series and remains exclusive to Harry Winston in watchmaking.

Dedicated to preserving and perfecting the traditions of fine watch-making, Harry Winston opened a state of the art Manufacture in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2007. True to Mr. Winston’s lifelong pursuit of “only the ex-ceptional,” each incredible timepiece created today - whether handcrafted

in the world’s finest diamonds or pushing the extremes of high horology - is crafted with the highest quality materials, combining the inimitable style of the House, with the finest traditions of fine Swiss watchmaking.

Carrying the lucky number 8, Project Z8 represents the latest model in Harry Winston’s innovative Project Z series, which showcases the House’s pioneering use of ZaliumTM. Lighter, harder than titanium and extremely resistant to corrosion, ZaliumTM is a zirconium-base alloy exclusive to the House, and reflects its motto of “only the exceptional” in design. Its matte gunmetal gray color gives an unexpected and captivating gleam to this striking sporting timepiece.

Project Z8 is powered by a mechanical automatic-winding Dual Time movement: a grand classic from the House and one that is truly appreciat-ed among connoisseurs. The center features a retrograde dual-time display fitted with an anodized aluminum hand with an elaborately curved and completely three-dimensional design that required considerable ingenuity to create.

Comprising 281 components, 32 jewels, a flat silicon balance spring and a newly designed white gold open-worked oscillating weight, this sophis-ticated caliber is a testament to fine workmanship, which extending all the way through to its circular Côtes de Genève motif. Project Z8 is an amaz-ing sequence of striking decorative elements, finishes and details. It has a satin finish on the upper surface with a micro-blasted zone on the lower sides as well as around the edge of the case.

The Premier Chronograph 40mm expresses the House’s jewelry tradi-tion and creative virtuosity through subtle decorative motifs. Stemming from the House’s first timepiece collection, which launched in 1989, the Premier is the perfect blend of seduction and femininity. In its newest ver-sion, the House has preserved the same style codes of the iconic design, while giving free rein to its creative instincts. Let the magic begin.

The volume of the rose gold case has been slimmed down to create a more elegant profile, while the 40mm diameter gives this chronograph a defined presence on the wrist. The attachments, which recall the neo-clas-sical arch defining the façade of Harry Winston’s historic Fifth Avenue Sa-lon, have been redesigned for a smoother finish. Generous diamonds of the finest quality are delicately handset, recalling the House’s iconic diamond creations. The crown is shaped like an exquisitely faceted gem, proudly celebrating Harry Winston’s fine-jewelry heritage.

The stunning brown Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial radiates a seductive smoky effect, hovering between shades of warm brown and couture grey. The diamond-set appliques and indexes, ornate decoration, and the strik-ing asymmetry of the various dials, combine to create a stunning visual rhythm on the dial.

Powered by a quartz movement, this chronograph has 12-hour and 30-minute counters, as well as small seconds at 6 o’clock. A shiny taupe alligator strap provides the perfect finishing touch, further enhancing the refinement and harmony of the design. PROJECT Z8

REVS UP ITS RACING COLLECTIONS

MILLE MIGLIA

Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s pas-sion for classic racing automobiles has had a pro-found influence on the company’s involvement in

the auto world and on its watch collections. It began with the Mille Miglia, a 1,000-mile race from Brescia to Rome through some of Italy’s most breathtaking scenery. The Scheufele family, including Karl-Friedrich and his father, Karl, has participated in the Mille Miglia since 1987, and has been a sponsor since 1988. Of course, the company has also made a limited edition timepiece each year to commemo-rate the race. This year’s Mille Miglia is a chronograph with vintage details that pays tribute to the historical cars taking part in this classic car race. The Mille Miglia 2014 limit-ed-edition watch carries a more distinctly Italian flavor than its predecessors, with its red tachometric scale and hands, white dial and green minute circle — the colors of the na-tion’s flag. It also pays tribute to the oldest cars taking part in the race, those dating from the 1920s and 1930s, with a numeral font from that era and an overstitched Barenia calfskin strap reminiscent of the bonnet straps on the most venerable participants in the race. It is equipped with a self-winding chronograph movement in a stainless steel or 18k rose gold case.

GRAND PRIX DE MONACO HISTORIQUE

Since 2002, Chopard has also been a sponsor of the His-toric Grand Prix de Monaco, which involves vintage racing cars dating from the 1920s to 1985. Karl-Frie-

drich Scheufele is a keen aficionado of historical cars, and for each edition of this race, held every two years, Chopard has presented a limited-edition chronograph. In 2014 and

for the very first time, Chopard is launching a full-fledged collection related to this race. The new collection of Grand Prix de Monaco Historique watches is composed of three precision instruments intended to support drivers. They in-clude the Chrono, the Automatic and the Power Control. The Automatic is COSC certified and has a self-winding movement. The Power Control has a power-reserve indica-tor placed at 6 o’clock, with a design that is directly inspired by fuel gauges. The Chrono features hour and minute total-izers, a small seconds and a central chronograph seconds hand, driven by an automatic movement. All are set in bead-blasted titanium cases, which are extremely lightweight and hard. It comes in various versions, including rose gold, steel and titanium versions.

SUPERFAST WITH CHOPARD CALIBERS

The timepieces in Chopard’s Classic Racing Collec-tion are equipped with Chopard movements that are designed, developed and assembled in the compa-

ny’s Fleurier Ebauches workshops. The Superfast Chrono houses Caliber 03.05-M, a mechanical self-winding chro-nograph movement. The Superfast Automatic is equipped with self-winding Chopard Caliber 01.01-M, displaying hours, minutes and seconds. The Superfast Power Control houses caliber 01.02-M, with hours, minutes, small seconds, date window and a power-reserve indicator. All are COSC certified and designed with a racing car aesthetic, with ver-tical lines on the dial that evoke the cooling fins found on air-cooled racing engines and numerals that resemble the markers on sports-car rev-counters and speedometers.

Only certain carefully selected diamonds are eligible to carry the inscription of For-evermark, a brand from the De Beers group of companies, the world’s largest dia-mond mining company. Only certain designers and manufacturers may set them into jewelry, and only certain retailers may sell them. Now, the brand has created an even more exclusive sub brand, Forevermark Exceptional Diamonds, with only

10 jewelers, with 12 locations, in the United States authorized to sell them. King Jewelers is one of those dealers.

The Forevermark diamond journey begins at the mine, where rough diamonds are extracted from deep within the earth. Each mine produces a wide range of rough diamonds, but only the highest quality rough material will be cut into a Forevermark diamond. Less than 1% of the world’s dia-monds are eligible to become a Forevermark diamond and be inscribed with the Forevermark icon and individual number. The Forevermark Exceptional Diamond is even more exclusive in terms of size, quality and color – each authorized gem represents one in a million.

The Exceptional Forevermark Diamond Collection showcases diamonds that represent only one in a million of all polished diamonds resulting from rough mined by the De Beers group of compa-nies. “Each diamond in this collection is a masterpiece that beautifully underpins the Forevermark promise of beauty, rarity, and the clearest chain of custody from mine all through the sorting, cut-ting and polishing journey,” says Forevermark U.S. president Charles Stanley.

All Forevermark diamonds carry a promise that they are beautiful, rare and responsibly sourced. Forevermark and Forevermark Exceptional Diamonds are guaranteed to be responsibly sourced from carefully selected mines in countries that are committed to the highest business, social, eco-nomic, and environmental standards.

In fact, for the first time in the De Beers group of companies’ 126 year history, the journey of each one of these exceptional diamonds has been carefully documented for consumers to experi-ence. Each diamond is presented with a customized booklet that details every step of its journey, beginning with the approximate era when it was created deep within the earth. Using custom copy and stunning visuals, key milestones in the diamond’s life are showcased.

Diamonds in the Forevermark Exceptional Diamond program were hand selected from amongst the most spectacular rough diamonds in the world and manufactured by master diamond cutters from New York-based Julius Klein Group and Premier Gem.

Forevermark diamond jewelry is sold at 380 leading jewelry stores across the United States and Canada, and in more than 1,300 doors worldwide. Forevermark Exceptional Diamonds are sold at only 10 jewelers, with 12 locations in the United States.
