Alice Parker (born 1925)
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me.
I bring good tidings to the poor,
Bindings for the broken-hearted,
Liberty for captives,
Release for the imprisoned,
And comfort for the sorrowful.
I give a crown of beauty for ashes,
The oil of gladness for grief,
And I give a robe of joy for despair.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
Who causes righteousness and praise
To spring up before all nations.
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me.
I bring good tidings, comfort, beauty, and joy.

ANTHEM Do Not Fear
Heinrich Christensen (born 1967)
Dedicated to Rev. Joy Fallon
on the occasion of her installation as the 16th minister of King’s
Chapel
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.
When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned,
And the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
You are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you.
Do not fear, for I am with you.
Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old.
I am about to do a new thing;
Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43, verses selected by Joy Fallon
THE ORDER OF INSTALLATION
THE SENIOR WARDEN shall address the congregation:
“Members of the Society of Kings Chapel: Through your vote, the Reverend Joy K. Fallon has been
invited to become the Minister of this Church. She is here and we are assembled to ratify before God
and before this congregation, the compact thus entered into. We, a portion of Christ’s flock, and this
woman, our elected Minister, duly feel and acknowledge the importance and sacredness of the relation
which is now to be formed between us. We, therefore, enter into this time of sacred prayer to the parent
of us all.”
FIRST INSTALLING PRAYER The Rev. Thomas Wintle
Senior Minister
First Parish Church in Weston
* The congregation will stand; please feel free to stay seated throughout the service if this is your choice. 6
THE SENIOR WARDEN shall address the congregation:
“The Wardens and Vestry of this Church, acting on behalf of the Society of Kings Chapel, and its
trustees, have elected, constituted and appointed the Rev. Joy K. Fallon to be our Minister, Public
Teacher, Priest and Pastor; to preach the word of God and to dispense lessons with piety, morality and
religion; to administer the holy ordinances; and to do, perform, and discharge all the other duties and
offices which of right belong to any Minister and Pastor by the authority of the laws and constitution
of the Commonwealth.
“By the forms and terms adopted, we do not seek to abridge the liberty of our Minister, for we do not
hold her responsible to us alone for the instruction she shall give, knowing that she is already
responsible to her own conscience, to her Savior, Jesus Christ, and to her God who we trust has called
her to this ministry.”
THE SENIOR WARDEN shall address Rev. Fallon:
“Reverend Fallon, you have been chosen by the Society of King’s Chapel to be our Minister, Public
Teacher, Priest and Pastor and you have accepted this appointment and trust. Therefore we, the
Wardens, by virtue of our lawful authority, do, before God and in the presence of these witnesses,
solemnly declare you, Joy K. Fallon , to be our Minister and upon your reaffirmation of acceptance to
this office and in testimony thereof, we shall deliver to your our Book of Common Prayer and also a
Bible containing the Holy Oracles of Almighty God.
“And we enjoin upon you a due observance of all the precepts contained therein, especially those
which relate to the office and duties of a Minister of Jesus Christ, and whatever else of truth or duty
consistent therewith shall be made known unto you. And may the Lord bless you, the Lord lift up the
light of his countenance upon you and give you peace now and evermore.”
REV. FALLON, THE MINISTER will accept the office and declare her hope and desire:
“Trusting in God’s grace and guidance, I accept this ministry which you extend to me and the
responsibilities with which you charge me. I pledge myself diligently to fulfill the several offices of
Minister, Teacher, Priest and Pastor, and to exercise my liberty and conscience for leadership, while I
am steward of this sacred trust, answering not alone to this congregation, but to our Heavenly Father as
well and at the last. May we, minister and people, walk together with loyalty and faith as befits disci-
ples of one Master and children of one God, and may His blessing rest upon us in this common ven-
ture.”
THE SENIOR WARDEN shall then say:
“And let all the people say Amen.”
The Wardens shall thereupon deliver to the Minister the Book of Common Prayer and
Holy Bible.

This Order of Installation was used for the Installation of the Rev. James Freeman as the fifth
minister of this church and the first to be ordained and installed in this place by the
congregation, on Sunday evening, November 18, 1787. The Senior Warden was Thomas
Bullfinch, M.D., who had been a member of King’s Chapel before the Revolution and had
with Mr. Freeman gathered together an almost entirely new congregation after six and one-half
years of inactivity. With minor modifications the same Order has been followed in the
installation of all subsequent ministers of King’s Chapel.

NOTES ON TODAY’S SERVICE OF INSTALLATION AND RECEPTION
Participants in the Service
The Rev. Tricia Brennan currently serves as Co-Interim Minister at the Winchester Unitarian
Society in Winchester, Massachusetts. Tricia served at King’s Chapel as a seminarian, an
assistant minister, and a sabbatical minister, and is well known and appreciated by this
Congregation.
Heinrich Christensen has been Music Director at King’s Chapel for 13 years, having first
served as affiliate organist under former Music Director Daniel Pinkham. Among his many
accomplishments, Heinrich offers frequent recitals, and will be a featured soloist at King’s
Chapel during the upcoming National Convention of the American Guild of Organists, to be
held in Boston, from June 23-27, 2014. As the longest serving member of the staff at King’s
Chapel, Heinrich’s insights and advice are deeply appreciated by Rev. Fallon, as she begins her
ministry here.
The Rev. Dr. Carl Scovel served as Senior Minister at King’s Chapel for 34 years, from 1965
to 1999. He currently serves as Minister Emeritus and has kindly responded to Rev. Fallon on
many occasions when she has sought his advice; she’s deeply grateful for his wisdom. Joy is
honored that Carl has agreed to preach today.
Anne Sexton is serving as the Marshall for today’s service. Anne is the Head Usher, serves on
the Vestry, Chairs the Hospitality Committee, and serves on both the Children’s Education and
Personnel Committees. Her longtime service to King’s Chapel and her planning skills are
exceeded only by her gracious warmth towards all: visitors, newcomers, and long-time
members alike.
The Rev. Dana Allen Walsh is Minister of Hancock United Church of Christ in Lexington,
Massachusetts, where she has served for seven years. Prior to coming to King’s Chapel, Rev.
Fallon served as both a seminarian, and then the Congregational Care Coordinator at Hancock,
under the thoughtful and generous guidance of Dana and her colleague, the Rev. Dr. Paul
Shupe.
The Rev. Dr. Thomas Wintle is Senior Minister at First Parish Church in Weston,
Massachusetts, where he has served for 18 years. Prior to that, he served for 20 years at the
Unitarian Church in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Dr. Wintle was Editor of the Unitarian
Universalist Christian theological journal for two decades, a valuable resource for Rev. Fallon
during this transition.

The readers of scripture, ushers and gift presenters in today’s service have served as leaders of
King’s Chapel over the past two decades, and their participation represents the rich legacy of
strong lay leadership from which this church has benefitted. The congregational form of
governance has been a hallmark of King’s Chapel since the first installation service after which
today’s is modeled, when the Rev. James Freeman was ordained and installed by this
congregation in 1782.

Today’s reception has been planned with the support and assistance of many, including
members Beth Chapin, Carolyn Russ, Sylvia Soderberg, and Parish Administrator, Julina
Rundberg.
Today’s service was planned largely by the Senior Warden, Dean Denniston, whose gracious
service to this church and to its new minister, has been boundless. Mr Denniston, who
received his M.Div. degree from Yale, lives out his ministry day by day, in countless ways,
seen and unseen. The Rev. Fallon gives him special thanks.
+++++
On this occasion, Rev. Fallon gives great thanks for the love and support she has always
received from her parents, Jeannette Dawson Kahlenberg, visiting here from Seattle today, and
the Rev. Richard W. Kahlenberg, a Presbyterian minister and teacher who died in 2004. They
have modeled for Joy God’s steadfast love.
The Rev. Fallon also is upheld by the long and unending love of her husband, Robert P.
Fallon; her children John Fallon and Kathryn Fallon Bitner; her son-in-law Kenneth Jake
Bitner; her many Fallon in-laws, including her mother-in-law Edith Walsh Fallon; and dear
friends who have seen her through many phases of her journey, from college and law school,
through government and church service. None of us can journey alone, and Rev. Fallon
rejoices today in the patient love she has received all along the way.
RECEPTION FOLLOWING THE SERVICE
All are warmly invited to the King’s Chapel Parsonage, 63 Beacon St., Boston, following the
service. A map is provided below.
For those not wishing to walk the approximate half-mile distance, taxis are often available
across the street from the Chapel, either in front of the Parker House Hotel on School Street,
or along Beacon Street, opposite the One Beacon Street building.
The Fallons are especially grateful for the care and attention given to the recent refurbishment
of the parsonage overseen by the Trustees: Gene Clapp, Rusty Park and Sam Perry.
Countless hours of care have been offered since February by Trustee Sam Perry, and
Buildings and Ground Chair John Bowman. Thanks to all friends and members of the Society
of King’s Chapel for their support.
