Married 1877 Louisa Barnes 1856-1951. John William Billiatt was Stephen King's cousin born in Lincolnshire in 1842. He arrived in S.A. in 1861 and joined Stuart's Exploration expedition. In 1863 he married King's sister Ann Elizabeth and they returned to England. In 1872 the Billiatts went to Paraguay with a group of British emigrants but the venture was a failure. In 1873 he brought his family to SA and opened a private educational establishment, the Lancing School at Glenelg, which he conducted until their return to England in 1889. They went to live at 'Calta Wurlie', Ottery St Mary in Devon; later he lived near Exeter. J.W. Billiatt died in Devon on 16 April 1919. Items 1 - 52 in this list were described by Mr K.T. Borrow in the King-Stuart collection supplement to the Royal Geographical Society centenary exhibition catalogue. (See PRG 627 item 309.) The cataloguing was continued by K.T. Borrow to item 106 and completed by Amanda Hogg, as a university field work student project upon donation of papers by Miss Shirley Cameron Wilson in 1994. Items 338-482 are from a later donation after the death of Miss Cameron Wilson in 2003, transferred by the executors of her estate. They contain more Stephen King and J.W. Billiatt material and that of later generations of the King family. Miss Shirley Cameron Wilson prepared a manuscript about J.W. Billiatt which was edited and published in 2007 by her executors. It is entitled Billiatt: John William Billiatt: explorer, adventurer and tutor. ___________________________________________________________________ 1. 376. Medal presented to a surviving member of the J. McD. Stuart 1862 exploration expedition on 25 July 1912. The date chosen was the 50th anniversary of the flag being hoisted on the north coast of Australia. The obverse face has a panel for the name of the recipient to be added; this medal panel is blank. See archival group D 7900(Misc) for other information on the award of the medal in 1912.

(two copies, one of which has been signed by those present).

382. Journal used by John William Billiatt and his wife Ann Elizabeth, nee King, 1861-1862, and 1863-1864. Mrs A.E. Billiatt’s journal of their trip to London on the barque ‘Coonatto’, 30 October 1863 - 4 February 1864 begins at the back of the volume, p.120, then uses the beginning of the volume to page 23 before ending again at the back on p.102. J.W. Billiatt’s journal begins 27 October 1861 (p.24) just prior to his joining J. McD. Stuart’s exploration expedition, and finishes 14 February 1862, p.63. All the journal entries are in pencil. There are manuscript poems added by others, ‘Lines addressed to the Party proceeding on the track of Dr Leichhardt’ (by R. Lynd, Sydney Barracks 2 July 1845), ‘Light from Religion’ and ‘Night’, pp.8-12, 15-16, and ‘The castaway’, pp.18-20. Inside the front cover is drawn a sketch of ruined buildings with the caption ‘5 hundred feet out of the […]‘ on one page; on the other is written ‘Stephen King’ and the date May 4 1860. On the back endcover is written a list of places presumably visited by Billiatt while on the expedition.

383. Loose pages 1-6 cut from another volume with entries by Ann Elizabeth Billiatt from 2 November to 30 November 1863. They appear to be a rough copy of a letter sent to ‘my dearly loved brother [Stephen King]’ in the form of a copy of part of her shipboard diary of the voyage of the ‘Coonatto’ to London.

384. Loose pages of poems placed in the journal, item 382 above. One is titled ‘A song of Australia’ by Miss E. Turner of Lyndoch Valley, and may have been submitted for the competition for a national anthem organized by the Gawler Institute in 1859. Other poems are: ‘The triumphs of the English Language’ by an American clergyman, and ‘On the Departure of an Emigrant Ship for New South Wales in 1827’ by T. Campbell Esqr, author of the ‘Pleasures of Hope’.

Original paper markers in the volume were at p. 388 (for Honington), p. 420 (for Braceby), p. 444 (for Anwick), and p. 547 (for Kirkby-la-Thorpe).

402. Captain James Bennett’s copy of ’The Peerage of the United Kingdom’, Volume II (Scotland & Ireland), by John Debrett, 1819, containing Bennett’s armorial bookplate on the inside front cover. The names of Stephen King, April 17 1857 and Ann E. Billiatt have been written on a preliminary page. Paper markers were placed at pp.756-757, 1104-1105 and 1200-1201. Various handwritten dates have been added, presumably by James Bennett, in the 1820s.

403. Bible belonging to the Billiatt family with Billiatt family details on the page beside the title page of the New Testament section and a sewn-in folded page section alongside. Other handwritten and newspaper cutting Billiatt information has been added at the end of the bible. The inside front cover has a list of the births of Stephen King junior’s family from 1879 to 1896. The volume has been repaired but is missing its front cover and first pages. These were found later; see 490.

404. Bible belonging to Ann Elizabeth King, given to her by her parents on her 16th birthday, 25 November 1860. On the preliminary page has been attached a notice for the sale of ‘Kingsford’ by its agent Edward Clement at Gawler dated 22 October 1875. On the reverse of this page has been attached a farewell note by a J. Farrell [name uncertain] ‘To J.W. & A.E. Billiatt, ship ‘Coonatto’’ written in ‘Camp 30’ October 1863, with a note ‘(Excuse haste)’. Typescripts of the sale notice and farewell note accompany the bible.
