Kingdom Animalia
Finally…our own kingdom!
What is an animal?
A multicellular organism that depends on other living
things for food, can move from place to place and can
reproduce sexually or asexually.
They have 6 main characteristics…
1. Animals are multicellular
2. Animal cells are eukaryotic
3. Animals depend on other living things for food
4. Animals digest their food
5. Most animals move from place to place
6. Animals reproduce sexually, asexually or both
Different food…different animals
Herbivore: eat only plants
Carnivore: eat only animals
Omnivore: eat both plants and animals
2 Different Groups of Animals
Vertebrates: an animal with a backbone
Invertebrate: an animal without a backbone
Animals with Different Shapes
Animals come in different shapes and symmetries
Symmetry: how the body parts of an animal are arranged
Radial Symmetry: animals with body parts that are arranged around a center point (round)
Bilateral Symmetry: animals that can be divided into 2 identical halves
Try it! Which symmetry?
9 Different Phyla
There are LOTS of different animals and they all belong in a different
phylum with others that are similar to them!
Phylum Porifera
Aquatic organisms, no tissues or organs –sponges
Phylum Cnidaria
Digestive cavity, most with tentacles that sting, aquatic –jellyfish, corals, hydra, sea anemones
Phylum Platyhelminthes
Flattened bodies parasitic and free-living - flatworms
Phylum Nematoda
Round body, free-living and parasitic forms -roundworms
Phylum Mollusca
Hard shell, soft foot to move – clams, snails, squid, octopus
Phylum Annelida
Segmented bodies and round –earthworms, leeches
Phylum Arthropoda
Hard exoskeleton, segmented bodies –insects, crustaceans (crabs), spiders
Phylum Echinodermata
Marine animals, spiny or leathery skin, tube feet –sea stars, sand dollars, sea urchins
Phylum Chordata
Internal skeleton, specialized organs –fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals
Let’s practice!
