KINGDOM CHALLENGE by Donny Cortimilia

I remember when we would come to the US from Senegal for furlough and the kids would talk about the fact that their peers in the US did not really know one another. They would go to movies together or other group events, but they didn’t spend time sitting around talking to one another or just being with one another. We do tend to be human doers rather than human beings. What do human beings spend our time on? Various studies show that theoretically we spend eight hours each day sleeping and eight hours working. What about the remaining eight hours? Some say that we spend about an hour eating and drinking. We spend around and hour and a half driving. Another hour is spent online. We spend almost three hours watching television. Finally it has been determined that women spend about thirty minutes cleaning, men only fifteen. (We could even out the minutes by calculating the number of minutes men spend per day thinking about nothing.). This is unscientific and does not take into account multitasking. This is a way to get you thinking as you are asked that question, “What did you do today?” That can be carried to an-other level when we ask ourselves, “What did you do with your life?” Between college and seminary I worked for a masonry company. The pay was good, but the work was hard. One of the things that stands out in my mind was that at the end of the day you could look and see the progress made in the construction of the building. When we invest our money we can see by performance how we are doing (I think most are pretty happy right now.). However there are some jobs that are hard to measure. Results can-not always be measured by numbers. How do we measure if ministry is going well? One thing the IMB taught me was to make goals. Goals had to be measurable. For example: “Talk to my barber every month about who Jesus is.” That’s simple, but measurable. At my yearly review my supervisor could ask, “Did you . . . ?” The following story came off of Christianitytoday.com. Not long ago, a man told me the story of his twenty-year walk away from God and his recent turnaround. While he was moving away from God, this man pastored a church for seven years. Under his leadership, the church doubled its membership, tripled its budget, and built a 100,000-square-foot addition. People constantly told him how much they enjoyed his sermons and how well he preached. Yet he wept as he told me that looking back on his pastorate, he couldn't think of one person who came to faith in Jesus Christ because of his ministry. Why? "It was not my intention," he said, "for people to accept Christ or follow him as a result of my preaching and pastoral min-istry." At the time, he was purposely distancing himself from his devout background. He was not looking for commitment from people. He was successful in what he set out to do, but he looks back now with remorse that he didn't set out to do the right thing. Thus, as we look at a new year we should set goals for our lives, share those with someone to whom you can be accountable and work to meet those goals. We want to spend our time well. At the end of life our Master we want to hear the words, “Well done.”

Thank you for your continued support of Baptist Student Ministry. It is a great honor to be able to pour into these college students. God is making a difference in lives because of this ministry. In January eight of us had the pleasure of going to the Passion Conference in Atlanta, GA. We participated with the thousands at Gwinnett Arena north of Atlanta, and were video linked with Phillips Arena in Geor-gia as well as a venue in Washington DC. We had live music by

Crowder, Matt Redman, Jimi and others. We were able to see Lou Giglio and John Piper live and video linked to hearing Levi Lusko, Christine Caine and Priscilla Shirer. We were challenged to live more fully for our sav-ior, Jesus, and to make Him the center of our lives.

February 2 – 3 we will head to Highland Lakes for Abide weekend. You can read below the description of the time. It is usually a great weekend and the Holy Spirit moves in the hearts of college students.

Abide is an unscheduled prayer experience for college students, high school seniors and adults who work with college students. Abide is designed to be a time of retreat. There is an opening session on Friday night and a closing session Saturday afternoon. Everything in between is up to you. There will be various “Abide Encoun-ters” to help you pray and connect with God. Sit by the water. Spend some time next to the bonfire. Sleep. Listen to the quiet. Pray for your campus and the world. Enjoy the cool weather. Take a walk by yourself. Have coffee with a friend.

Midland Baptist CRISIS Center “Where need and opportunity meet.

Hello everyone. It is very easy to see the news reports about oil going up, the Permian Basin economy increasing, the housing market exploding, experiencing the frustration of the increase in traffic, and think that everyone in our area is doing ok because “oil is good”. This is definitely the case for many, but I urge you to remember that it is not the case for everyone. People on limited or fixed incomes can especially struggle during these times because the whole cost of living goes up, yet their income typically doesn’t. This can leave many individuals and families suffering hardship. And while their challenges are difficult, your faithful prayers and support allow us to continue meeting their needs. It is truly an honor to represent the churches and individuals who support us as we serve the needs of the poor and hurt-ing in our city. Recently we have been able to see some neat things in the lives of some of our friends who have had very difficult days. One of our friends was homeless when we first met him about the middle part of last year. He was estranged from his young children and their mother. He spent several months in homelessness. One day he was hanging out in an area where some of our homeless friends stay during the day. A man pulled up in a pickup and asked if anyone wanted a job. This young man said “Yes”. A few days later he passed a drug test and went to work. Now he is doing well, and he is working on restoring his relationship with his family. He has found a local church home where he at-tends regularly and is plugged in with a Bible study group. He has told us how meaningful it was to him that we were there for him to help him during his time of need. THANK YOU for allowing us to minister to people like him every day. For His glory, Russell Cowan, MBCC Director

COMING UP CHURCH SAFETY SEMINAR We have now reached an all-time for the num-ber of violent deaths on church and faith-based property in a single year. We are at 108 in 2017

(so far). The old 'record' was 77 in 2015.
