What Defines Fungi?
Fungi are:• Eukaryotic• HeterotrophsFungi have:• Cell walls made of chitin• An external digestive systemIf it doesn’t have all these, it isn’t a Fungus.
Structure of Multicellular Fungi
1. Mycelium – consists of strands of hyphae grown into the fungi’s food source or source of nutrition.
2. Fruiting Body – some fungi do not have a fruiting body but those that do grow them for the purpose of reproduction and spreading of spores. In club fungi, the fruiting body is the only visible portion of a fungus.

Reproduction of Fungi
In the most basic terms:1.Spores are released from the fruiting body2.They find their way to a source of food and
nutrients3.The spores grow into a mycelium structure
from the food source4.Eventually the mycelium will mature into a
new fruiting body5.Note that most but not all fungi, especially
single celled fungi, reproduce this way.
Single Celled Fungi
• Single Celled Fungi reproduce by meiosis, just like all other cells
• An example of a single celled fungus is the yeast.
