Kingdom Protista

• Is considered to be the “junk drawer” kingdom since it’s very diverse.

• All are eukaryotes (with nuclei) that live in moist surroundings.

There are ? types of protists.

Page 5: Kingdom Protista. Is considered to be the “junk drawer” kingdom since it’s very diverse. All are eukaryotes (with nuclei) that live in moist surroundings

• Ones with psuedopods(pseudo=false, pod=foot)

• These organisms allow their cell membranes to bulge out so they can move.

1. Sacrodines

Page 6: Kingdom Protista. Is considered to be the “junk drawer” kingdom since it’s very diverse. All are eukaryotes (with nuclei) that live in moist surroundings

1. Sacrodines• An example is an amoeba.

• Amoebas have a contractile vacuole; structure that collects extra water and expels it from cell.

2. Ciliates

• Contain cilia or hair-like projections from the cell.

• Example: paramecium

3. zooflagellates

• Have 1-8 whip-like tails called flagella.

• Example: Giardia

4. Sporozoans

• Parasites that feed on cells/body fluids of hosts.

• Example: Plasmodium (causes malaria)

2. Fungus-like Protists

• Like fungus, fungus-like protists are heterotrophs, have cell walls, and use spores to reproduce. But unlike fungi, these guys at some point can move.

Fungus-like protists

• Examples:

• water molds (grows as tiny threads for a fuzzy covering), downy mildews, and slime molds (bright colored, feed on decaying plants.

3. Plant-like Protists

Algae-all are autotrophs like plants, most O2 comes from these organisms, they vary in size.

Plant-like Protists

• Euglenoids – green unicellular algae found in freshwater. They have long flagellum.

• Dinoflagellates – unicellular algae covered in “stiff plates”, 2 flagella, many glow in dark

Plant-like Protists• Diatoms – unicellular with glass-like

walls, support the aquatic ecosystem.

Plant-like Protists

• Green algae – uni- and multicellular, green pigments.

Plant-like Protists

• Red algae – almost all are multicellular seaweeds, some can live below 260 meters in the ocean. Carrageenan comes from red algae and is used in making ice cream and conditioner.

Plant-like protists

• Brown algae – Giant kelps, brown, yellow, and orange pigments.

• Orange pigments help make salad dressing and pudding.
