Kingdom Protista
Protists
• Protista is made up of mostly unicellular organisms that do not fit into any other kingdom
• Can be heterotrophic or autotrophic• Most live in water or moist
environments• ALL are eukaryotic• Protista = the very first
Classification
• Classified according to how they obtain nutrition and how they move
1. Animal-like Protists2. Plant-like3. Fungus-like
Animal-like Protista
• Also called Protozoa• Classified by the way they move into
4 different phyla1.Zooflagellates – flagella2.Sarcodines – pseudopodia (Amoeba)3.Ciliates – cilia (Paramecium)4.Sporozoans – do not move
(Plasmodia)
Plant-like Protists
• Contain chlorophyll and perform photosynthesis
• They can be either unicellular or multicellular
• Many contain pigments that give them a variety of colors
• Examples: Euglenoids, Algae, Diatoms, Dinoflagellates
Algae
• Make up the base of aquatic food chains
• Phytoplankton make up half of the photosynthesis that occurs on earth
• Can cause “red tides” or algal blooms that are toxic
Unicellular: plankton, Euglena Multicellular: Green algae, Brown algae,
Red
Algae
Unicellular Organisms
Fungus-like Protista
• Decomposers that live on dead organic matter
• Usually found under fallen leaves or rotting logs
