This week, Kingdown kicked off National Anti-Bullying Week in style!

On Monday, members of staff wore t-shirts with the phrase ‘Bullying Stops Here’ across the front, to show that we are unitedagainst bullying at Kingdown, and that we are an anti-bullying school. This launched the start of Anti-Bullying Week, and a series of

events we will be holding in school – everything from special assemblies, to tutor theme sessions, to film clubs focused aroundthe idea of anti-bullying.

Kingdown students set off on their initial day of testing.

Year 9 students Marley Evans, Luke Brichard-Parsons,Charley Boyd, Jamie Beck, Penny Russell, BeckyHumphreys, Enya Reid-Brown, Libby Cumming, AmyVincent-Ehlert, Charlie Sellars and Oliver Strutton, havebuilt and programmed 3 quadcopters and now aim torace them against other teams from the South West totry and qualify for this year’s Raytheon QC National Finalin Birmingham on 12th December.

It's fair to say we had a pretty stressful day with a streamof breakdowns, software and programming issues andthen – once working – breakages! However, the teamsraised their efforts brilliantly throughout the dayovercoming each obstacle as they arose. The teams nowhope to add the finishing touches over the weekend,having competed in the regional finals on Wednesday.Good luck to all! Mr Leater.

Raytheon STEM Quad Copter Challenge 2018Science Technology Engineering Maths

Earlier this year, Kingdown School embarked on an exciting partnership with Mother Mary School in Kibagabaga, Rwanda. This newpartnership took place when Headteacher, Mr Locke, invited former Head of Applied Science, Bernard Garforth, to the school withHeadteacher, Dinah Nawatti, and Director, Cyprian Rwabigwi, to learn more about how teaching is planned and delivered in an Englishsecondary school. Dinah and Cyprian met with teachers from across all departments and exchanged ideas and information throughouttheir two-day visit to the school in July.

Over the past few weeks, the Kingdown Equalities Team have been in communication with the Student Council at Mother Mary, inorder to introduce themselves and communicate about what life is like in Wiltshire, and in Rwanda!

We are so excited to learn more about life at Mother Mary, and in Kibagabaga, over the next few weeks, months and year. In themeantime, let me introduce the Mother Mary School Council!Mr Richardson

The Mother Mary School Council

This is a national competition that involves the design, build and programming of Lego Mindstorm robots.Students are learning new coding skills and solving problems whilst working in a team.

The sessions in school build towards a national competition, competing against other school teams fromaround the country. There is a range of different challenges based around a space theme “Into Orbit”. Therobot will have to send Lego figures into space, launch capsules across the map and collect moon rocks.

The Lego League Afterschool club is still open for all ages and runs every Thursday in Room S5 withMr Adams and Miss Byham.

On the 18th of October, Year 9 and Year 12 I.T. had guest Speaker K.Phillips visit from Airbus Defence and Space to discuss an inspirationalcareer in space. She described her role programming a computercontrol centre for geo-static communication satellites and explainedhow satellites which she controlled are launched and programmed.Students learnt about the technical requirements of working on suchas project as well as the important of working in a team, even acrossborders. The satellites are launched with the European Space Agencyand she described using French Language every day as well as her roleprogramming the UK based satellite control centre. Year 9 and Year 12asked some brilliant questions during the following Q&A sessionregarding her most testing days at work as well as querying efforts toclear space debris.

Kingdown’s Gardening Club were involved in a county-wideevent last week to mark one hundred years since the end ofthe First World War. Students planted tree saplings tocommemorate fallen soldiers – each tree representingsoldiers who lost their lives. Students were supported byMs Bala, Mr Frostick and Mrs Cox. Six trees were planted –the species chosen by each of Kingdown’s six Houses.

Year 8 Beyond The Edge UpdateAt the end of last term, we really enjoyed looking forward to

meeting Year 8 students who had already completed 10 tasks oftheir ‘Beyond The Edge’ booklet. We were quite blown away bythe incredible things students have been undertaking as part of

the programme, and wished them well with a postcards,rewards points and some other treats to say ‘well done’.
