THE LOCATION

KINGMAN, ARIZONA

Page 8: Kingman Regional Medical Center Director of Cancer Care Job Profile

Kingman is the heart of historic Route 66 and one of the hidden treasures of Arizona. Scenic hiking, historic charm, great cafes and restaurants, and the allure of Route 66 combine to make Kingman a remarkable destination. According to the 2015 census, the population of the city is 28,125. The nearby communities of Butler and Golden Valley bring the Kingman area total population to over 66,000. Kingman is located 103 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, about 150 miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona, about 165 miles northwest of Phoenix, Arizona, about 205 miles and about 250 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California.

Kingman sits on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert, but is located in a "cold semi-arid climate" instead of the desert. The climate type receives slightly more precipitation than the hot desert climate found to the south and west, and the wintertime low temperatures are significantly colder. Kingman's higher elevation and location between the Colorado Plateau and the Lower Colorado River Valley keeps summer high temperatures away from the extremes experienced by Phoenix and the Colorado River Valley. The higher elevation also contributes to winter cold and occasional snowfall. Kingman occasionally receives a dusting of snow in the winter, though it rarely remains on the ground for longer than the mid-to-late morning.

Seasonal recreation is endless in Kingman and surrounding areas. Summers can be spent swimming, fishing or boating in the many lakes in the area such as Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, or a trip could be taken to the Hoover Dam which is only 65 miles away. The winter can bring in close to 100 inches of snow to the surrounding areas including Flagstaff, Arizona about 150 miles away. Sports and activities such as skiing, snowboarding and festivals continue new opportunities during the winter months. Kingman also has two 18-hole golf courses with drive ranges and PGA staff available for lessons, as well as the endless trails and mountains that are always open for hiking in the area.

Kingman is also a destination for history enthusiast and boasts more than sixty historic buildings, homes, point of interests and historically significant outdoor locations. Many of the buildings are still in use today as businesses or government

offices, and most of the historic homes are still being lived in. The architecture shoes a wide variation in the use of wood sheathing, local stone, concrete, red brick and adobe. The earliest buildings are miners’ cabins and cottages.
