The Retirement Buckby Mike Bellino

Although my resident Nevada mule deer hunt started on October 5th, this story began in 1957 when at the age of five my dad took me on my first deer hunt. For the next almost 20 years I never missed be-ing on a deer hunt. That all changed when Nevada went to a draw system but I have continued to go as we generally draw a tag every three to four years depending on the area we want to get. Over the course of a good many years hunting deer I have seen some very big ones taken by my dad, uncle and other hunting partners and have taken a few myself that were more than respectable bucks. But that elusive 30-inch buck I had always wanted was now again in the back of my mind, and now I had five months to think about it and get ready. Based on what I had been hearing and reading the past few years on my area, I felt I had a good chance to take a more than average buck. Early scouting trips from myself and also my stepbrother, Ivan Brown, confirmed that a couple of shooter bucks had been found. October couldn’t come soon enough. The morning of the 14th arrived and my son and I loaded up our gear, picked up Ivan and heading for the hills. It wasn’t long before we were spotting deer, but nothing we were looking for. The next morning we were up at 4:30 am driving to a certain area. Just before our destination, we spotting some deer crossing at the edge of our head lights. Ivan suggest we pull off and wait for light. Little did we know that would be a very wise decision. When light came we headed back to an area that had a large bowl we thought might be worth looking at. We spotted some smaller bucks and continued our way in. It wasn’t long before we spotted some deer feeding on a hillside. Ivan immediately said one was a good buck and needed a better look. I could see that he had a lot of mass and well past his ears. That was enough for me.

Retirement We closed the distance to 305 yards and I set up my tripod and settled the Rem-ington 7MM in the cradle and began to relax my breathing. I gently squeezed the trigger and the ballistic tip hit him hard. A quick follow up shot put him on the ground for good. When we got to him I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. By the time Mike got to us I had worn a path around this deer from doing circles all the time muttering unbeliev-able! I had my 30-incher and then some, as he taped out a whopping 39.5-inches at his greatest spread, with 9 points on the right and 7 on the left. He later officially scored 207 gross and 203 4/8 net non-typical B&C.

As you can imagine with this guy in the back of a Tacoma pick-up it didn’t take long to draw a crowd

when we hit Ely. It was then that a guy named Bill Ricci looked at

him and said, “That’s a retirement buck, when you take something that

big you’d might as well retire from deer hunting as it would be hard to top

that one”. At 60 years old and hav-ing taken 48 years to get one like this I

have agree with him, but come next April I have a hunch I’ll be applying again. I

have to thank Mike and Ivan during this whole ordeal as well as their help in pack-

ing him out.
