Thursday, October 18, 2012 Creative by Design Festival Week This week, our primary school excitedly participated in activities during Creative by Design week. The theme for 2012 was ‘The Song of Your Heart’. At King’s, we believe that within our students are the seeds of different, and wonderful, gifts and talents. They have been encouraged to experience, explore and investigate a range of entertaining and educational activities that will enable them to see how they can develop the song within them and to become all that God intended them to be. At the opening ceremony, students were excited by our special guest from Adelaide, Mr Sean W Smith, pastor, preacher, musician, songwriter and singer. Our scripture for the festival was Ephesians 5:19-21 - Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts. Some of the events which took place this week were - Never-ending Treasure; Heart Art; Dr Rock; Telling Tales; Indigenous Art; Boomerangs; Class of Excellence; Yogalaties; Gladiator Challenge; Book Fair; music workshops; Japanese culture; treasure hunts; Big Bang Art; Kids Acting Up; class clowns; The Words of Your Heart; poetry writing; creative song writing; Rocking Robotics; photo competition and colouring in competition. On Tuesday night 16 October, the lower primary put on an entertaining musical called Aristocats. The audience loved watching the children perform as much as the children enjoyed showcasing their talents in singing and acting. Well done lower primary children. Pixi photos are available to order from the lower primary office. A very special thankyou to our guests, teachers and teacher aides who have helped to make this week an enjoyable educational experience.

Creative by Design Festival Week

“Educating students in Christian leadership for tomorrow’s generation”

This week, our primary school excitedly participated in activities during Creative by Design week.

Early Learning Programs Primary

Joeys Joining InWith almost the year gone for our Junior Kindy children

they are showing how well they are learning to play together. As children immerse themselves in play they simply enjoy being, playing alongside their friends. As children chat with each other their thinking and learning becomes richer and more complex.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.

Proverbs 29:17Strong-Willed Children or Leadership Qualities?

Children who make decisions with intensity tend to be labelled “strong-willed.” At the end of the day, their parents feel as if they’ve been engaged in hand-to-hand combat and that the child often wins at the parent’s expense!

Most parents consider a strong will, a negative personality trait because it often creates resistance and frustration in family life. Yet, in reality, it’s the strong-willed children who are often better equipped to succeed, be creative, and face adversity.

Children with strong wills have the potential to become the next generation of leaders. They have their own ideas and plans. They know what they want. They’re persistent, confident, passionate, and determined to succeed at whatever they choose to do.

Leaders have an agenda, look for ways to incorporate others into their plans, and have a high need for control in life. Balanced with graciousness, leaders become treasures because they make things happen, create organisation out of chaos and motivate people to action. Unfortunately, it’s hard to raise a leader. These children tend to have their own ways of doing things and like to tell other people (including their parents) what to do. A strong will keeps a child moving in a certain direction in spite of obstacles. Often these children need bigger barriers or tighter limits to teach them that those boundaries are firm.

Don’t be discouraged by the effort it takes to teach a strong-willed child which limits not to push. The strong-willed child accomplishes things in life, because the roadblocks that might hold others back are no match for this child’s determination. Your job is to help him know the difference between obstacles to overcome and limits to live within. A strong will can be an asset… as long as the heart is in the right place.

Strategy for the week: Focus your attention on how to help your child develop into someone who loves God and will passionately pursue Him. This will develop the gifts of the Spirit in your strong- willed child so they will be a leader who is compassionate, yet strong. Set boundaries to care for this child and be consistent with them. Teach them to think rationally, to be the boss of their feelings handling them in the appropriate way and to always be respectful. They will need the consistent consequences when they fail in this area.

A Disciplined TongueThis little article gives words of advice that probably we

could all benefit by heeding. We, none of us, are perfect and all make mistakes but by stopping and thinking, we may make less.

Once, when Thomas Edison the inventor was at a reception, the toastmaster stood up and complimented him on his many inventions, especially the talking machine. After the toastmaster sat down, the aged inventor rose to his feet and said, “Thank you for those remarks, but I must correct one thing. It was God who invented the talking machine. I only invented the first one that can be shut off.”

A doctor once told the story that while writing out a prescription, he asked a woman to put out her tongue. When he had finished, she said to him, “But doctor, you never even looked at my tongue.” The doctor replied, “It wasn’t necessary, I just wanted you to keep quiet while I wrote the prescription.”

Amidst the humour of these stories, there is a point to be made – words are important but don’t overdo them. I like the advice of an anonymous poet who wrote:

If your lips would keep from slipsFive things observe with care:Of whom you speak, to whom you speak, And how and when and where.

Ernest Hemingway quipped, “It takes two years to learn to speak and sixty to learn to keep quiet.” The psalmist prayed, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord.” Careless words are often just the meaningless chatter we engage in when we’ve nothing worthwhile to contribute. The more we speak them, the more they are likely to deteriorate into gossip and hurt people. Solomon writes: “Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent …” (Proverbs 17:28 NLT)

A wise person has a disciplined tongue. We need to stop and think about what we are going to say. The Bible says, “Let your speech always be with grace … that you may know how you ought to answer each other.” (Colossians 4:6 NKJV)

In the light of problems in relationships that are caused by idle chatter and gossip, and by the words that are placed on Facebook and other social media, I spoke to the students at assembly last week about being mindful of what they say. It is my prayer that our students will learn to think before they speak about others, spread that tasty piece of gossip and make and entry on Facebook.

If we all adhered to these principles, our school and our

community would be much more harmonious. We could build trusting relations, build one another up and above all honour our Heavenly Father.

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19 NIV)

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord. Know who you are in Christ. Nurture compassion. Have a chuckle. Attitudes are habits. Courage. Recognise your heroes. A disciplined tongue.

A Challenge of a Lifetime for AlexDuring the holidays Alex Jack, 10Y, flew to Papua New Guinea

to track the Kokoda Trail with the Kokodo Kids youth program.Alex tracked six to eight hours everyday for 10 days through

thick muddy scrubland and crossed river creeks which were waist deep.

The temperatures reach 40 to 45 degrees. Alex said it was one of the hardest things he has ever done in his life and has so much respect for the diggers that walked the track and lost their lives for our country. The highlight of the challenge was meeting the local village children and giving them small gifts.

Outstanding Achievements Ben Gerry While most people were relaxing in the holidays Ben Gerry in

5H had the trip of a lifetime going on a rugby tour with his club. Ben and his team went on the European Western Front Tour to France and the UK. He had a wonderful trip and a very successful one. One of the special memories for Ben was visiting Villiers Brettonaux.

Here is a quote by his coach:“UNDEFEATED EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS. Well done to the

U11 Dolphins (they are all in one piece mums), they came and conquered. 16 teams > 495 points for / 40 against. They have embodied everything that is great about the greatest game, rugby. The boys have conducted themselves on and off the field above expectation, sportsmanship and fellowship well beyond their years. In the name of rugby, I salute them. Coach Marcus”

Well done, Ben. King’s is very proud (and a tad jealous) of you.

Dean OosthuizenDean Oosthuizen (6W) has been

selected for the Gold Coast cricket U13A squad for this year’s state championships being held in Charters Towers from the 16 - 22 December. Dean is one of our all-round top sportsmen and we wish him well for December.

Olivia OttoThis year Olivia (9Z) has represented

the Gold Coast in the U15 State Hockey Tournament on the Sunshine Coast in June school holidays and U18s state tournament on the Gold Coast during the October school holidays. Last night she was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the season. Early in the year at just 14 years of age, Olivia also tried out for the South Coast team in the U19 category and made the possible and probable side. The Commonwealth Games in 2018 on the Gold Coast is looking good.

Keegan PalmerKeegan (4J) has been at it again

carving up some impressive results with his skateboard and a fearless attitude. He recently travelled to Sydney (Bondi beach), for the Bondi Skate Riders Club competition and placed 2nd in the U13s. Then last weekend the Palmer family traveled to Melbourne for The Shed Bowl competition where Keegan gained 1st in the U13 category. Keegan is definitely a superstar of the future.

Also our swimming program has kicked off on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6.45am – 8am with Mr Foster. Mr Stephen’s will be starting up Runners Club on Wednesday mornings from 7am – 8am. Students continue with their APS sports each week with the finals just around the corner for the high schoolers. Adele Phillips and Joel LonsdaleAdele Phillips (3D) and Joel Lonsdale (8V) both competed at

the 1st Gatorade Triathlon for the season at Raby Bay on the weekend. Both Adele and Joel won their age group in convincing fashion. For Adele, this is her third triathlon in a row that she’s won so it seems that she’s on a hot streak. We wish them both well with many more races coming up over summer.
