Kingsbury School & Sports College Prospectus 2013

TOGETHER WE CAN

Welcome to Kingsbury School and Sports College prospectus. We want to give you a flavour of the school and the breadth of experiences our students have during their time with us.

We are a multicultural, 11-16 community comprehensive school of 900 students. Located in Erdington (3 miles north of Birmingham city centre), we have an 11 acre site which includes a range of specialist sports facilities and have been a Sports

College since 2003. Having looked through this prospectus, if you want to know more, please do not hesitate to contact us for a visit.

We have high expectations and set high standards for all. We are committed to working in partnership with students, staff, parents and the wider community to ensure our young people leave Kingsbury with the best possible foundation academically and socially for future success in adult life.

We aim to foster a positive attitude to lifelong learning by recognising students’ achievements and developing their full potential. We want our students to be confident and responsible global citizens able to make a positive contribution to the school and the community beyond. We value our diversity as a school and our ethos of tolerance, respect, fairness and equality.

We are committed to making a positive impact and maximising the future choices of our students beyond school whatever their abilities and interests.

Students’ progress, achievement and effort are celebrated. We have a varied curriculum that provides challenge and support, promoting enjoyment of learning. Our students are encouraged to be problem solvers, creative and reflective learners, who find the best way to learn.

Our curriculum offers a range of qualifications to promote success and respond to need. We encourage students to take qualifications when they are ready and consider how to compete effectively in the future.

Key to success is the home school partnership. We track students’ progress to ensure they are working to their full potential and regularly discuss progress with parents/carers. We keep in close contact with families so that we can work together to support and challenge our students.

To support learning beyond the school, we have online access to study tasks, guides and up to date information for students and their parents.

Students’ enjoyment of learning is central to success. We provide a wide range of activities both inside and outside lessons to extend students’ perspectives on learning and their own capabilities.

As a Sports College we make full use of our extensive facilities to emphasise healthy lifestyles and promote participation in activities. We encourage all students to participate in physical activity and provide a variety of activities to meet the differing interests of students including orienteering, mountain biking, climbing, archery, trekking, and dance and sports leadership.

We are committed to ensuring our students have residential experiences both in the UK and internationally such as an annual international ski trip, year group camp, Duke of Edinburgh Award and much, much more.

There is a busy enrichment programme that runs before school, break-times and after school. Students can develop their skills and talents and make new friends through for example film making, debating, deejaying, performing arts and enterprise. We have an onsite Leisure Centre that provides sporting and adult learning activities for the wider community that our students and families are encouraged to access.

Students are encouraged to foster a commitment to lifelong learning within the academic and vocational learning opportunities on offer.

The majority of our students go on to further study at local colleges and school sixth forms, while the others are supported in making the appropriate choice of training or apprenticeship.

We want our students to develop the skills and understanding of the employment world and further study, so that they can compete effectively beyond 16. Through our extensive partnerships with businesses, industry and training providers, students are mentored, undertake practice interviews, work experience and are provided with a range of opportunities to develop their employability skills.
