What are the roles of the 6th grade team leader?

• Monitor the academic and behavioral performance/progress of 340+ students

• Communicate information to 6th grade teachers, parents, and students

• Attend to any/all 6th grade student, parent, or teacher concerns

• Serve as a “go-between” for parents and 6th grade staff

• Run and facilitate 6th grade meetings

• Co-coordinate 6th grade’s annual Outdoor Education field trip

Special Education @ KMSProvide direct instruction and resource support to students

identified as having special education needs according to state and federal guidelines.

The team consists of parents, special education teachers, general education teachers, paraeducators, counselors, related services personnel (speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, etc…), as well consultation with our school psychologist and pupil personnel worker.

We are a full inclusion program providing direct and indirect special education services both inside and outside of the classroom based on the student’s IEP.

Students are assigned a case manager who oversees their program, meets with students on a regular basis to support their needs, and maintains weekly contact with parents.

What is Student Service Learning?

• MCPS students must complete a minimum of 75 SSL hours for graduation.

• MCPS students may begin to work on this graduation requirement the summer after completing grade 5. They continue to accrue hours throughout high school.

• Registration forms are due to 5th grade teacher by Friday, February 6.

• We use your teacher’s recommendation, data, and your requests to decide your schedule.

• Make good academic decisions about:• Reading ( Digital Literacy) or World Language

• Elective choice or choices

Course Choices

• If students are recommended for Reading (Digital Literacy), they MUST take Reading (Digital Literacy) and one elective choice.

• If students are recommended for World Language, they can select French or Spanish, and one elective choice.

• If students are recommended for World Language, they can opt NOT to begin in 6th grade and select two elective options.

** Students and parents should consider this decision carefully as changes will not be possible after registration is complete.**
